Australian Silky Terrier - a True Blue Aussie
Petcare Hints Australian Silky Terrier - a true blue Aussie This versatile little dog is another Australian made product which has won acclaim, not only in its own country, but throughout the world. It is a one family dog, very loyal with a great sense of humour, affectionate and gentle. As a house dog he is easily trained and clean. The smallest of the Australian breeds, he is none the less very courageous and an excellent watch dog. It is believed that this breed developed along the same lines as the Australian Terrier, being descended from Broken Coated Terriers, and early records show that a Broken Coated Terrier bitch of a blue sheen colour was taken from Tasmania to England in the 1820¹s and bred to a Dandie Dinmont Terrier. A Mr Macarthur Little purchased some puppies from these litters and was so impressed that he proceeded to establish a similar type of terrier with a soft coat. Later he migrated to Australia and brought some of his dogs with him. He settled near Sydney and continued to experiment in breeding these little dogs. Several were sold to Charles Hincliffe, who moved to the goldfields near Ballarat in Victoria and the little silky coated dogs soon became well known around the district. By 1908 the breed had become well established. It came in two sizes - over 6 pounds and under 12 pounds. A trophy was offered at the Sydney Royal Show for an owner who won Best of Breed three years in succession and the award was a small gold brick on a chain, known as "The Prince of Wales Trophy". -

AUSTRALIAN SILKY TERRIER Oprindelsesland: Australien
Senere emigrerede hr. -
Black Hair Follicular Dysplasia in a Brazilian Terrier

A black and white female Brazilian Terrier (one year and three months old) was referred with a history of progressive hair loss only in black hair areas. Following anamnesis, clinical examination, trichographic analysis of hairs and histopathological examination of skin fragments, the animal was diagnosed with BHFD. This report describes for the first time a case of BHFD in a pure bred Brazilian Terrier. Keywords: dog diseases, hypotrichosis, alopecia. Palavras-chave: doenças do cão, hipotricose, alopecia. Introduction and follicular lipidosis. Colour-associated CFDs include colour dilution alopecia (CDA) and black hair follicular dysplasia Skin and hair colour is determined primarily by the occurrence, (BHFD). The former is found in dogs bearing the diluted coat quantity and metabolism of melanin, the most common forms colours blue or fawn (dilution of black and brown respectively) of which are eumelanin, responsible for black to dark brown and is characterised by poor quality hair and varying degrees pigments and pheomelanin, from which yellow to red pigments of alopecia (Gross et al., 2005). -
Brazilian Owners Perception of the Body Condition Score of Dogs and Cats
Teixeira et al. BMC Veterinary Research (2020) 16:463 https://doi.org/10.1186/s12917-020-02679-8 RESEARCH ARTICLE Open Access Brazilian owners perception of the body condition score of dogs and cats Fabio Alves Teixeira1, Mariana Ramos Queiroz1, Patrícia Massae Oba2, Rodrigo Fernando Gomes Olivindo1, Mariane Ceschin Ernandes1, Caio Nogueira Duarte1, Mariana Fragoso Rentas1 and Marcio Antonio Brunetto1* Abstract Background: The knowledge of how owners view the body condition of their animals is an important factor for the success of the prevention/treatment of obesity and the engagement/adherence to nutritional interventions, which are fundamental to improve the animal prognosis. For this reason, the objective of this study was to evaluate the perception of the owners regarding the body condition score of their animals, compare the perception between cat vs. dog owners, and owners from the countryside vs. metropolitan region of São Paulo State in Brazil. Results: 601 dogs and 110 cats were included in this study. There was no significant difference in body condition score assigned by owners by species. Owners of dogs and cats classified by the veterinarian as ideal, overweight, and obese who disagree with body condition score assigned by veterinarian mainly underestimate the body condition score of their animals, while lean dogs’ owners overestimate it. Countryside dog owners had a higher rate of disagreement with the veterinarian and more often underestimate the body condition score than owners from the metropolitan region. The owners of lean cats have the same judgments with veterinarians. Conclusions: Owners of dogs and cats have difficulty assessing the body condition score, especially owners from countryside. -
UTILIZATION Hunting Dog for Small Game, Guard Dog and Companion
A Breed Standard is the guideline which describes the ideal characteristics, temperament and appearance of a breed and ensures that the breed is fit for function with soundness essential. Breeders and judges should at all times be mindful of features which could be detrimental in any way to the health, welfare or soundness of this breed. UTILIZATION Hunting dog for small game, guard dog and companion. BRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY The ancestors of the Brazilian Terrier do not originate from Brazil. In the last century and in the beginning of the present, many young Brazilians studied in the European universities, especially in France and England. These young people often returned married and their wives brought with them a small Terrier type dog. The young Brazilians and their families went back to the farms they had left. The little dog adapted to farm life and crossed with local dogs and bitches. Thus, a new model was shaped and the phenotype was fixed within a few generations. With the development of big cities, the farmers, with their families and employees were attracted by the great urban centres. In this way the little dog suffered another change in his surroundings. GENERAL APPEARANCE Medium-sized dog, slender, well balanced, with firm but not too heavy structure, body of square appearance with clean curved lines that distinguish him from the smooth Fox Terrier with square lines. BEHAVIOUR / TEMPERAMENT Restless, alert, active and keen; friendly and gentle to friends. HEAD Viewed from the top, the head is triangular in shape, broad at its base, with ears well apart, narrowing notably from the eyes to the nose tip. -
