Will she win? We certainly hope so. 2 magazine, which would cover the music and culture (and the attendant lifestyle and politics) that interested me, and I realised then that now I was being given the chance. As I have always admitted, I am growing up in public and that I have no real long term plan with any of the things that I do, except to seize the opportunities that I can, and basically make it up as I go along, going in whatever direction the Fates send me. Which is basically how I live my life. So this new advancement is allowing me to produce something that is far more like a magazine than it was before. I am very much an old fashioned sort of fellow, and don’t really like many new fangled things. E-books are a particular gripe of mine—I have an e-book reader (mainly because they were incredibly cheap at Asda) and I use it mostly for reading pdfs of technical journals in bed, or reading So welcome to the first issue of the new look Gonzo P.G. Wodehouse novels whilst I am travelling Weekly. somewhere, but for me at least the e-book has only a very limited appeal. I am always amazed at how fast technology advances and how we can all do things now that E-magazines, however, are an entirely different would have been unthinkable even five years ago. -

I also got sacked from my position at the BBC for claiming (on air) that her death had been the result of a conspiracy by Interflora, who seemed to have been the only people to benefit. Five years later when it all happened again I was less cynical, but refused to join in the grief for a lady of 101 to whom I was not related, despite the fact that she had lived an extraordinary life and achieved some extraordinary things. Over the lifespan (so far) of this magazine we have seen the deaths of many luminaries, and tried to celebrate their lives in these pages. Distinction? the IRCAM, Progressive Rock, and Class at the End of Modernization
Distinction? The IRCAM, Progressive Rock, and Class at the End of Modernization Jonathyne Briggs Emory University The postwar economic miracle, famously termed "les trentes glorieuses" by Jean Fourastie, recreated French society through rapid modernization. For Henri Mendras, this transformation led to the "second French revolution," the disappearance of the social structures of class that had been embedded in France since the nineteenth century. Mendras argued that in the brief span of thirty years, class had been eclipsed by new social constellations of identity, including youth, gender, and ethnicity.1 In his monumental work Distinction, Pierre Bourdieu countered that despite any leveling in economic capital during the postwar era, the dominant bourgeois class cultivated cultural capital to insure its position in society.2 Class maintained a powerful charge in France due to the ability of social elites to dictate cultural norms, so that modernization only reinforced class divisions in the postwar era and any social changes were superficial.3 For Bourdieu, class differentiation continued 1 Henri Mendras and Alistair Cole, Social Change in the Fifth Republic: Towards a Cultural Anthropology of Modern France (New York: Cambridge University Press, 1991). 2 Pierre Bourdieu, Distinction: A Social Critique of the Judgment of Taste, trans. Richard Nice (Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press, 1984). 3 Kristen Ross makes a similar charge in her Fast Cars, Clean Bodies: Decolonization and the Remaking of French Society (Cambridge, MA: M.I.T. Press, 1995), although she factors in race as well. 450 Distinction? 451 to replicate itself as elites consolidated and reinforced their control of cultural codes necessary for legitimate culture to dictate the link between taste and class position. -

The legacy of slo-core was still being felt at the end of the decade on countless recordings devoted to fragile, slow ballads. For example, Fuck in San Francisco, notably their second album Baby Loves A Funny Bunny (1996), and Kingsbury Manx in North Carolina, with the gentle, bucolic odes of Kingsbury Manx (1999). Texas' American Analog Set (1) advanced the oneiric sound pioneered by Galaxie 500, especially on their second album, From Our Living Room To Yours (1997). The extended single Late One Sunday (1997) wove together two hypnotic patterns, respectively a country guitar twang and a dub bass line, against a backdrop of intense drumming and floating voices. New York's trio Calla (1) sculpted shadowy melodies that slowly crept out of their fragile envelopes on the stark and stately Calla (1999), a softly- hallucinated music reminiscent of Ry Cooder's soundtracks and Calexico's desert ambience. Seattle's Red Stars Theory (2) turned Built To Spill's brainy trance upside down, emphasizing the trance, on their mostly-instrumental albums But Sleep Came Slowly (1997) and especially Life In A Bubble Can Be Beautiful (1999), which fused psychedelic, chamber and country music. -
