Lee Wan Address: The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shatin, New Territories, Hong Kong Exhibition and Symposium on Contemporary Chinese Painting The University held an Exhibition of Contemporary Chinese Paintings at Hong Kong City Hall from 9th to 14th May, in vitin g some fifty overseas and local artists to participate. In the meantime, from 10th to 13th May, a symposium w ith the same theme was also held at the University, at which prominent scholars and renowned Chinese painters from all parts of the world gathered to explore issues in the theoretical and creative aspects o f contemporary Chinese painting. The exhibition and the symposium, sponsored by the Ming Pao Daily News Ltd., aimed to encourage research on and to inspire the creative sp irit in Chinese painting, as well as to promote international cultural exchanges. Preparation for the exhibition and the sympo sium began early this year, w ith an organizing com mittee headed by Dr. Ng Lee Ming, Dean of the Faculty of Arts. The painters and scholars were invited in their personal capacity. The exhibition, after months of hard work by the organizing committee, commenced on 9th May. Professor C.N. Yang, Distinguished Professor-at-Large of the University, officiated at the opening ceremony. Professor Yang, Dr. Ma Lin, the Vice-Chancellor, Mr. Louis Cha, Director of Ming Pao Daily News Ltd. and Professor Tseng Yuho, representative of the painters, addressed the guests at the ceremony. The Chinese painters from the four comers of the world represented in this major exhibition included Zhu Qizhan, Liu Haisu, Dong Shouping, Li Keran, Ye Qianyu, Wu Zuoren, Lu Yanshao, Li Xiongcai, Tang Yun, Xie Zhiliu, Guan Shanyue, Sun Ying, Wu Guanzhong, Cheng Shifa, Huang Yongyu, Huang Zhou, Chen Peiqiu from the Chinese mainland; Wong Chun- pei, Chen Chi-kwan, Wu Cheng-yen, Hsu Shu-hsiu, Kuan Chih-chung, Li Chi-mao, Yuan Te-hsing, Au H o nien, Lee Chu-yuan, Hwang Chur-hwu, Ho Huai-shuo, Hong Keng-sheng from Taiwan; Luis Chan, Chao Shao- an, Yang Shen-sum, Jao Tsung-i, Irene Chou, Liu Kuo- sung, Chong ling-ling, Chui Tze-hung, Lee Yun-woon, Kan Tai-keung, Kwok Hon-sum, Cheng Ming, Lau Wai-ki from Hong Kong; Wang Chi-ch'ien, Tseng Yuho, Fong Chung-ray, Chen Sui-kang, Wucius Wong from the United States, Koo Mei from Canada, Chu Teh- chun, Zao Wou-ki from France, Hsiao Chin from Italy, Fang Zhaoling from the United Kingdom, Chen Wen- hsi from Singapore and Chung Chen-sun from Malaysia. On display at the exhibition were about 200 paintings, showing a great variety of subject matters Jao Tsung-i,Cave at Izum o NEWS 1 and styles. Traditional paintings of landscape, figure, ‘The Style o f Chinese Painting in M alaysia' by Chung bird and flower were placed side by side with mod Chen-sun dern paintings in a semi-abstract or abstract style. This personal interview was covered by the student on Oficial Master of Cultural Management of the University of Barcelona, with a discussion directing to cultural management in detail of re-presentation of cultural identities reflected on contemporary architecture in China. During the interview, YING Chaojun emphasized that, the modern architecture, particularly those projects in the field of public service, should play a role representing the city’s image and conveying a certain cultural characteristics. In order to return to architecture itself, his team do not praise architect stars, on the contrast, they respect each other and regard the comprehensiveness as their team’s working ethnic. To deepen further, YING Chaojun metaphorically regarded architect as a screen director. That is to say, an architect has that responsibility to create a spacial plot. Specifically referring to museums, art galleries, etc., in the field of public projects. These architectural works should provoke visitor’s appreciation to the territorial and historical cultural atmosphere that raised by this architectural space.

    Methodology The Art Market analysis presented in this report is based on results of Fine Art auctions that occu- red between 1st January and 31st December 2019, listed by Artprice and Artron. For the purposes of this report, Fine Art means paintings, sculptures, drawings, photographs, prints, videos, instal- lations, tapestries, but excludes antiques, anonymous cultural goods and furniture. All the prices in this report indicate auction results – including buyer’s premium. The $ sign refers to the US dollar and the ¥ sign refers to the Chinese yuan. The exchange rate used to convert AMMA sales results in China is an average annual rate. Any reference to “Western Art” or “the West” refers to the global art market, minus China. Chinese Art is divided into two main categories: • “Chinese Painting and Calligraphy” indicates traditional Chinese art such as works in ink on a variety of substrates including Xuan paper, silk and fans. “Chinese calligraphy” is focused on lettering, words, poems and wishes, whereas “Chinese painting” represents landscapes, people, birds and flowers. • “Oil painting and Contemporary art” indicates artworks created by Chinese artists who appropriated Western techniques and artistic media (oil painting, photography, sculpture, installation, drawing in pencil, gouache, watercolors, etc.) after an oil on canvas was pres- ented in China for the first time in 1579. Regarding the Western Art market, the following historical segmentation of “creative period” has been used: • “Old Masters” refers to works by artists born before 1760. • “19th century” refers to works by artists born between 1760 and 1860. • “Modern art” refers to works by artists born between 1860 and 1920.

    Comparativism from Inside and Outside: Not only a matter of viewpoint Review of: Comparativism in Art History, edited by Jaś Elsner, London & New York: An Ashgate Book, Routledge, 2017, ISBN 978-1-472-41884-5 hardback, 234 pages with 84 B&W illustrations. £76 John Clark This is a very heterogenous book with many different kinds of approaches, all of whose writers are found solidly within existing Anglo-American art historical, anthropological and archaeological institutions. There is no writer from a non- Euramerican institution, and the two writers of Asian background – Stanley Abe and Wu Hung - are already well-emplaced in the US’ academic world. The publishers state on their web-site blurb for this book that, Art history is less a single discipline than a series of divergent scholarly fields but all with a visual emphasis on the close examination of objects.1 It may be that, for some of these authors, art history is about the historically aesthetic character of art works and only tangentially about the social meaning art works carry, that it relegates as outside consideration those forces which are external to art productions, is unconcerned with other-cultural constructions, and consequently de-emphasizes the institutions of the art world which constrain these. The ‘Acknowledgements’ make a reference to an undated ‘conference’ under the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and Institute of Fine Arts, New York University [vii], a grant awarded in a programme which apparently ran for the years 2011-2016,2 but except for a further reference in the introduction [1], the reader is given no further details of the conference, its participants and papers, and therefore can make no direct appraisal of the linkage to those in the present volume.

In Hong Kong which serves as a convergence of Chinese and Western cultural narratives, "hybridity" comes to be a primary concern for local artists to take into consideration in their art creation. As a Chinese painter I consider my artworks to related to the guohua concept, however I also aim to shape my art to reveal the identity of Hong Kong culture through hybridity, and to revive guohua through sustaining the great tradition of bimo (literally meaning the brush and ink), in Chinese painting, as well as appropriating Western modes of expression.
