Abstract SHAKESPEARE'S HENRY V AND THE ALEXANDRIAN ALLUSION by Winona Howe The character of Henry V (in Shakespeare's play of the same name) has been a matter of debate among critics, some of whom accept the historical view of Henry as an extraordinarily able and heroic king, while others view him as an extremely unattractive personality, a spiritual hypocrite, and a conqueror of unmitigated cruelty. Cited as supporting evidence for this unflattering portrait is a passage in Act IV which consists of a conversation between two characters, Gower and Fluellen. In this conversation, Henry is compared to Alexander the Great or "the Pig" as Fluellen terms him. Two critics, Ronald Berman and Robert Merrix, have published studies of this passage; a close examination of the allusion, however, reveals serious flaws in the theories of both scholars. -

She moves the scenes from place to place or jumps over time. She also asks the audience to imagine some of the things which simple theatre can’t show. THE ENGLISH COURT King Henry: the young, recently crowned king of England. As a young prince he lived a wild life getting drunk with Sir John Falstaff and his companions and when the play begins he is still struggling to come to terms with his new role. He is intelligent, articulate and passionate and during the play he learns how difficult it is to take responsibility as a leader. He does not always make the right decisions but wins through a combination of determination, openness and luck. Exeter: a loyal advisor to the king. She is with Henry in battle but is also a trusted envoy to the French court and present at the final peace negotiations. York: is Henry’s cousin. He is loyal and impetuous and his death at Agincourt moves Henry to tears. Cambridge: a close friend of the king, who plots with the French to assassinate Henry. -

Henry IV (Part I) General Introduction In this chapter, we shall focus upon the text, the context and the critical evaluation of the first part of Henry IV by William Shakespeare. Beginning with a quick recapitulation of Shakespeare’s life and times, the chapter shall examine the social and political contexts which led to this play. It shall also attempt a brief analysis of the audience reception towards this play and the manner in which the line of demarcation between history and literature gets obliterated in the process of writing a history play. William Shakespeare – a brief biography William Shakespeare was born on 23 April 1564 to John and Mary Shakespeare at Stratford- upon-Avon. He went to King’s New School, a local grammar school, and is said to have left formal education at the age of fifteen or sixteen. Nothing much is known about his life from 1585 to 1590s and these years are hence termed “the lost years”. His emergence as a playwright took place during the 1590s and by 1598, Shakespeare was renowned for writing tragedy, comedy and history plays, besides poetry. He flourished as a playwright through the Elizabethan and Jacobean ages, and died in 1616. Scott Fraser University of the West of England ABSTRACT Even with the multitude of religious, political, social and gendered readings of the character, critics have invariably (and understandably) tended to focus most often on the events leading up to and including the rejection scene in 2 Henry IV , and have given far less attention to the report of his death in Henry V . In light of criticism concerning the relationship between Falstaff and the actor Will Kemp, as well as the roles of the stage Vice and clown, this essay will focus on the report in an attempt to reinterpret it and its importance for the play as a whole. As will be seen, in performance it actually formed an integral part of an iterative process that would have served to problematize the presentation of kingship in Henry V on the early modern stage.
