The forum had multiple moderations with pertinent impact, and constituted a significant moment on the lives of its participants that came from many institutions that wanted to be present at this important event. This volume is published in order to increase the congress’ impact and that a wider number of interested researchers and practitioners are able to have access to what took place and how the subject of Painting, its creation and contemporary research was pertinently approached. Hoping that it serves as the preparation for the 2nd congress, these documents are testaments to the work of artists, academics, researchers and students of fine arts, who have dedicated great attention to this demanding and always renewed Painting discipline. This publication aims therefore to make a substantial contribution to research in Painting within Higher Education. It is a reflection of work undertaken in both our research centre and also in the wider academic context. In a constantly evolving discipline, it is surely a contribution for its near future. Francisco Laranjo General Chair of ICOCEP 6 7 Painting and Teaching’s book aims to reflect about artistic education and its institutions, by analyzing issues such as methodologies, programs, and the place of the teacher inside the artistic practice. Questions like: Should the art teacher also be an artist? Which role plays the artist as a teacher inside the university? and others connected with the teaching of painting in the university, today. It presents a selected peer review articles from international researchers of several important academic institutions, mainly from Europe. The objective is to present a multiplicity of reflexions about the Teaching of Painting in a contemporary context, and the role of the School of Art and its intervenients. The publication is in the continuity of the International Congress on Contemporary European Painting held at Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto in 2017. The image on the cover shows a painting student in front of her work, but instead of touching the surface of the canvas with brushes, it looks that she´s trying to feel with her hand the image and the matter. It seems that she´s trying to experience the invisible thru her painting. In this sense, this image shows how complex painting is, and the complexity of the teaching of painting could be, because probably it represents something further than teaching technique, art history or art critique, into a very wide technical, emotional and intellectual territory. We expect that this book could be a contribution for the important discussion about teaching painting and to enlighten the reader, not only with answers but with other questions. 8 NOVA PALETA EDUCATIVA PARA A EDUCAÇÃO UNIVERSITÁRIA Professor Catedrático na Universidade do Porto Médico Dentista especialista em Ortodontia e Diretor Clínico, Portugal. Vivemos, de facto, numa época de grande desorientação onde a incerteza se tornou omnipresente. Daí que o porvir da sociedade humana careça de um novo rumo, onde forçosamente tem lugar uma nova pedagogia, geradora de um ensino mais civilizador. Ora, essa imprescindível mutação no binómio ensino/aprendizagem justifica-se plenamente e passa, de forma inexorável, pela valorização da dimensão cultural, valorização essa que se alicerça numa educação de banda larga, numa abrangência para além do laboral e do mercantil e numa conceção pedagógica bicéfala, onde morem conjugalmente a ciência e a arte. Os autores dão conta de ensaios de novas pedagogias onde aliam o ensino profissional à educação cultural e artística. 1. Admitimos que temos dilatada dificuldade em descobrir palavras, porque é indizível o que sentimos pela vossa pródiga generosidade ao ler o que escrevemos, sobre o que tão pouco sabemos, mas que, todavia, nos encanta, nos cativa e, simultaneamente, nos liberta. 9 Esperamos não desiludir, não ficar aquém e deixar uma mensagem mais além. Devemos confidenciar aos respeitáveis leitores que o objetivo nobre destes escritos passa por concertar um diálogo entre os educadores, os artistas e os cientistas, nas suas diferentes linguagens de representar o mundo, e pensar numa outra paleta educativa como um ansiolítico para a desorientação da vigente sociedade. Admitimos ser importante desde já, declarar, que somos convictos defensores dos valores da humanidade, onde cabe um ilimitado amor à cultura, e, se esta revista e objetiva, na sua intrínseca missão, elevar a dimensão cultural e ser fonte de estímulo intelectual, então sentimo-nos em casa, no meio de amigos de quem gostamos, e com os quais, nunca temos frio. Reconheçamos que a contemporaneidade social perdeu luz e extravasa uma ampla e assustadora iniquidade, ao que não será estranha a perda da consciência individual e social nos valores do humanismo e a continuada perda dos direitos que derivaram do iluminismo [1]. Citando Gilles Lipovetsky [2], no seu recomendável livro “A Cultura- Mundo”, tem-se assistido ao desmoronamento dos grandes sistemas ideológico-políticos e vive-se uma ordem mundial caótica, onde o nevoeiro substituiu a certeza dogmática das grandes doutrinas da História.

This research examines the emergence of the terms critical design and critical practice, and aims to develop methods that use criticism during the design process from a practitioner’s perspective. In an historical approach this paper will succinctly study the tradition and charisma of this light material, giving special credit to the stained glass, demonstrate the emerge of this Art in the relation with architecture, concerning the Portuguese contemporary panorama. Portugal has a history regarding contemporary stained glass that is unknown. In the 20th century we assist to an interest and development in this art, as many recognized Portuguese artist, painters and sculptures contribute to this mural art, conceiving cartoons and maquettes that would be produce in glass studios, some of them in Portugal, in a close relationship between artists and craftsmen.

A master of texture, Richter has experimented with different techniques of paint application throughout his career. His hallmark is the illusion of motion blur in his paintings, which are referenced from photographs he himself has taken, obscuring his subjects with gentle brushstrokes or the scrape of a squeegee, softening the edges of his figures to appear as though they had been captured by an unfocused lens. This publication concentrates on the theme of landscape in Richter’s work, a genre to which he has remained faithful for over 60 years, capturing environments from seascapes to countryside.

Next 21 March, European Day of Artistic Creativity, a lot of initiatives of citizen participation will be developed with the objective of celebrating artistic creativity around Europe. The European Day of Artistic Creativity is a new initiative promoted by CreArt. Network of Cities for Artistic Creation, a cultural cooperation project with the participation of 12 partner cities and insitutions (Aveiro–PT, Kaunas-LT, Kristiansand–NO, Linz–AT, Stichting id11– NL, Genoa-IT, Lecce–IT, Harghita–RO, Pardubice–CZ, Arad–RO, Vilnius-LT, and Valladolid–ES) within the framework of the Culture Programe of the European Commission. “As members of the CreArt project, we are aware of the importance of promoting creativity as one of the basic elements of individual development and of the creation of a European identity.
