Smith Richardson Foundation Junior Faculty Research Grant, Murfreesboro, TN. June 2007-December 2010 A $60,000 grant funded research and writing for The Arab Gulf States: Beyond Oil and Islam. The grant also provided funds for summer teaching salary in 2007, multiple research trips, promotion of the completed book, and a reduction of teaching responsibilities for the fall 2007 and spring 2008 semesters.

Fulbright-Hays Fellowship, , and Istanbul, Turkey. October 2002-December 2003 A $45,000 grant funded dissertation research. During the grant, I also delivered a lecture in at Damascus University on Muslims' influence on American history, gave a lecture in Arabic on the U.S. system of higher education, and participated in US-Syrian student dialogues at Damascus University.

MIDDLE TENNESSEE STATE UNIVERSITY, Murfreesboro, TN August 2006-Present  Middle East History (History 4440—Fall 07; Fall 09; Fall 2012): This lecture course surveys the factors that have shaped the political, economic, literary, religious, and socio-cultural features of the Middle East from 600 to the present. Its geographic scope comprises the central provinces and territories of the former Ottoman and Safavid empires: Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, Turkey, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Palestine, Egypt, the Gulf, and Iran.  Middle East History (History 5440—Fall 09): This graduate course surveys the factors that have shaped the political, economic, literary, religious, and socio-cultural features of the Middle East from 600 to the twenty-first century. Its geographic scope comprises the central provinces and territories of the former Ottoman and Safavid empires: Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, Turkey, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Palestine, Egypt, the Arabian Gulf states, and Iran. It also focuses on the leading scholarly texts in Middle East and Islamic studies.  Middle East History and Historical Literature (History 6304—Spring 2010): This graduate course provides an introduction to historical literature on Islam and the Middle East that has been produced from the turn of the twentieth century until the present.  Introduction to Middle East Studies (Middle East Studies 2100—Spring 07; Spring 08; Spring 09; Spring 2010): This course provides an introduction to the people, culture, geography, religions, and history of the Middle East. It covers history from the seventh century until the present including: the rise of Islam, Arab nationalism and formation of the modern states, the creation of Israel, oil and natural resources, religious traditions, social structures and family life, international diplomacy and peacemaking, problems of Westernization and modernization, and political Islam. In addition, the course examines the region’s cultural, literary, and social life.  Arab-Israeli Conflict (History 3080—Fall 06; Fall 08; Spring 2012): This lecture course examines the history, causes, evolution and main issues of the Arab-Israeli Conflict from the nineteenth century until the present. Among the key themes that the course discusses are Israeli and Arab nation and state building, exile, diaspora communities, and migration. It also examines how the conflict has shaped the cultural, literary, and social life of Israelis and Arabs since the late nineteenth century.  World History II (History 1120—Fall 06; Spring 07; Fall 08; Spring 09; Fall 2009; and Spring 2010; Spring 2012; Fall 2012) This course acquaints students with the expansive scope of human history from approximately 1500 to the present. It examines processes, trends, and other factors at the global level incorporated within the historical background of various regions and civilizations. It also emphasizes a series of evolving relationships: those between human beings and their physical environment, between different religious and political systems, between different ethnic groups, and between men and women.

DEPAUW UNIVERSITY, Greencastle, IN August 2005-June 2006  Modern Middle East History (History Exp—Fall 05; History 122—Spring 06): This lecture course surveys the factors that have shaped the political, economic, literary, religious, and socio-cultural features of the modern Middle East from 1500 to the early twenty-first century. Its geographic scope comprises the central provinces and territories of the former Ottoman and Safavid empires: Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, Turkey, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Palestine, Egypt, the Arabian Gulf states, and Iran.  Arab-Israeli Conflict (History 200D—Fall 05): This lecture course examines the history, causes, evolution and main issues of the Arab-Israeli Conflict from the nineteenth century until 2005. Among the key themes that the course discusses are Israeli and Arab nation and state building, exile, diaspora communities, religion, and migration. It also examines how the conflict has shaped the cultural, literary, and social life of Israelis and Arabs since the late nineteenth century.  Islam and Global Terrorism (History 300D—Fall 05): This upper-division seminar course puts the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and the current war against global terrorism in historical perspective. It surveys the rise of militant Islamic groups from North Africa to Southeast Asia, their ideologies, strategies, tactics and track records. Special attention is given to America’s relationship with Islam and Muslim extremist groups and its prosecution of the war against global terrorism, internationally and domestically.  History of Iraq (History 290B—Spring 06): This lecture course explores the factors that have shaped the political, economic, and cultural life of the peoples of Iraq from the eighteenth century to the present. The readings focus on issues such as colonialism, who controls petroleum and other natural resources, ethnic and religious tensions, and Iraq’s role in regional affairs. While the course focuses on the contemporary history of Iraq, it also explores the legacy of the nation’s ancient and Islamic past.

 Gender and Identity in the Middle East (History 300F—Spring 06): This upper-division seminar course charts the development of women in the Middle East from the nineteenth century to the present. Among the topics covered are Middle Eastern women’s central roles in resisting colonialism, their struggle against patriarchy and other forms of discrimination, their assumption of agency and empowerment in many fields, and their efforts to transform their societies’(and religions’) attitudes towards gender roles. The readings focus on history, sociology, economics, political science, literature, religion, and women’s studies.

GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY, Washington, DC January 2005-June 2005 Royden B. Davis Fellowship  History of African Jihads in the Old and New Worlds (History 312): This upper-division undergraduate seminar introduces students to the modern history of Islam in Africa and to the role that African jihads have played in politics and in the history of Muslim peoples in African and beyond. The course explores the political and socio-economic causes of African jihads; the peoples and institutions, including women, who participated in jihads; and how European colonialism shaped the goals and manifestations of African jihads.  Won a competitive fellowship awarded to graduate students to teach a seminar course in spring 2005.
