Or a mistake in a brochure may have never been caught until it was much too late. Subscription brochures for the 1969-70 Season and 1970-71 Season both refer to the upcoming season as the 7th Season. Brochures for the 1967-68 and 1968-69 Seasons refer to them respectively as the 5th and 6th Seasons, but a brochure for the 1965-66 Season refers to that as the “second full season.” During the 1963-64 Season, Trinity Players on the Square was not a fully professional company and there were no actual performances in 1963. 1964-65 was the first full season with Adrian Hall as artistic director and Equity contracts. Wolfe has had a distinguished career in the theater. Among the numerous awards and prizes that he has garnered are two Tony Awards. In addition to directing such important works as Tony Kushner's Angels in America, Wolfe has also written a number of plays and musicals, several of which have had successful runs on Broadway. Since 1993, he has been the producer and artistic director of the New York Shakespeare Festival and the Joseph Papp Public Theater, positions that give him one of the most influential voices in American theater. Origins in Kentucky Wolfe was born on September 23, 1954 in Frankfort, Kentucky, a segregated city at the time. He recalls the "very tight black community" in which he grew up as nurturing. As a child, he says, he "was told that [he] was magical . special and extraordinary," and he "grew up with no concept of racial inferiority." He did, however, encounter racism. He experienced what he called a "defining event" when, at age seven, he could not get into Frankfort's Capitol Theater to see the animated Disney film 101 Dalmations because he was black. He used his altogether justified outrage in a positive manner. He determined to strive for excellence in everything he did so that he could get "into any place [he] wanted to get into." He adds that "it was also a given that once I got into the room, I was supposed to open the windows and doors and let in other people." As a young child Wolfe attended the private all-black school where his mother taught and later was principal.

A DIVINE OPENING NIGHT AT THE GEFFEN PLAYHOUSE BETTE MIDLER IN I’LL EAT YOU LAST: A CHAT WITH SUE MENGERS WRITTEN BY JOHN LOGAN AND DIRECTED BY JOE MANTELLO LOS ANGELES (December 5, 2013) – Bette Midler opens tonight in the West Coast premiere of the Broadway smash I’ll Eat You Last: A Chat With Sue Mengers, presented by the Spotlight Entertainment Series at the Geffen Playhouse. The critically acclaimed show, written by Tony Award winner John Logan (Red) and directed by Tony Award winner Joe Mantello (Take Me Out, Wicked) will appear for a limited three week engagement through December 22, in the Gil Cates Theater at the Geffen Playhouse. Tony and Grammy Award-winning superstar Bette Midler plays the legendary Hollywood agent Sue Mengers (1932-2011) in the new play, her first appearance on Broadway in nearly 40 years. Midler’s performance was hailed by The New York Times as “the most lusciously entertaining performance of the Broadway season.” "Bette Midler is Broadway and Hollywood royalty," says Randall Arney, Artistic Director of the Geffen Playhouse.
