Cam panologists have written many books on bells. Yet although the two sub jects are so intimately related, rarely -if ever-have they been brought together in a single volume. Here the author, an acknowledged authority on the art of bell-ringing in all its phases who has made a special study of church towers and their history, describes many little known facts about the peculiar characteristics of bell towers-and many are distinctly odd. For ex ample, architects often omitted access to the upp~r floors of towers, since they ceased to be places of refuge in time of war. Every church has its own peculiar characteristics; so also have the towers and spires. No two are ex actly alike even though of the same period, and in this book we have examples of all the varying types and designs. The author is a well-known bell ringer who has rung peals in hun dreds of towers throughout the country, and his visits to towers and researches into their history have enabled him to write, with personal knowledge and experience, a fasci nating book for all who ever wished to climb to a bell-chamber.
