Copies of each publication are distributed to libraries and scientific organizations and to specialists and others interested in the various subjects. The Proceedings, begun in 1878, are intended for the publication, in separate form, of shorter papers. These are gathered in volumes, octavo in size, with the publication date of each paper recorded in the table of contents of the volume. In the Bulletin series, the first of which was issued in 1875, appear longer, separate publications consisting of monographs (occasionally in several parts) and volumes in which are collected works on related sub- jects. Bulletins are either octavo or quarto in size, depending on the the needs of the presentation. Since 1902, papers relating to the botanical collections of the Museum have been published in the Bulletin series under the heading Contributions from the United States National Herbarium. -

(Geology), No. 26, 61-72, 2011 61 Early Permian ammonoids from the Takakurayama area, Abukuma Mountains, northeast Japan Masayuki FUJIKAWA* and Chisato SUZUKI** Abstract Four ammonoid species, Thalassoceras? sp., Artinskia sp., Agathiceras sp., and Paragastrioceras? sp., are described from the lower part of the Takakurayama Formation in the Takakurayama area, Abukuma Mountains, northeast Japan. This fauna indicates an Early Permian (Sakmarian-Artinskian) age. Three of these species except for Agathiceras sp. are described from the Takakurayama Formation for the first time. Key words: Abukuma Mountains, ammonoid, Early Permian, Takakurayama. Introduction The Permian Takakurayama Formation (Onuki, 1966) is widely distributed in the Takakurayama area, Abukuma Mountains, South Kitakami Belt, northeast Japan (Fig. 1). The formation is exposed on the northeastern slope of Mt. Takakurayama, where it generally strikes NNE-SSW and dips at 30-45º to the west. It consists mainly of black shale with subordinate sandstone and conglomerate, and is more than 805 m in total thickness (Fig. 2). The formation is subdivided into three members: the Iriishikura, Motomura, and Kashiwadaira members, in ascending order (Onuki, 1966). These members are equivalent to the Iriishikura, Motomura, and Kashiwadaira formations proposed by Yanagisawa and Nemoto (1961). Here, we adopt Onuki’s scheme, and refer to the lower part of the Takakurayama beds as the Iriishikura Member. Users can use simFossilRecord to simulate diversification in incompletely sampled fossil records, under various models of morphological differentiation (i.e. the various patterns by which morphotaxa originate from one another), and with time-dependent, longevity-dependent and/or diversity-dependent rates of diversification, extinction and sampling. Additional functions allow users to translate simulated ancestor-descendant data from simFossilRecord into standard time-scaled phylogenies or unscaled cladograms that reflect the relationships among taxon units. -

The ammonoid recovery after the end−Permian mass extinction: Evidence from the Iran−Transcaucasia area, Siberia, Primorye, and Kazakhstan YURI D. The ammonoid recovery after the end−Permian mass extinction: Evidence from the Iran−Transcaucasia area, Siberia, Primorye, and Kazakhstan. Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 58 (1): 127–147. Investigations of the Upper Permian strata in the Iran−Transcaucasia resulted in identification of 32 ammonoid genera. The majority of ammonoids in this collection belong to the order Ceratitida (75%). Among Dzhulfian ceratitid ammonoids representatives of the family Araxoceratidae (Otoceratoidea) are most abundant. The assemblage structure changed radically during latest Permian (Dorashamian) time, bringing a domination of the family Dzhulfitidae. The Induan (Lower Triassic) succession in the Verkhoyansk area provided a few groups of ammonoids which are Palaeozoic in type: families Episageceratidae (Episageceras), Xenodiscidae (Aldanoceras and Metophiceras), and Dzhulfitidae (Tompophiceras) and superfamily Otoceratoidea (Otoceras and Vavilovites). It demonstrates the survival of ammonoids belonging to these groups the Permian–Triassic (P–T) boundary extinction event and their quick migration to the vast ar− eas of higher latitudes (together with some representatives of the Mesozoic−type families). Induan–Olenekian ammonoid successions in South Primorye, Mangyshlak, and Arctic Siberia illustrate the high rate of Early Triassic ammonoid recov− ery in both the Tethys and the Boreal realm. New ammonoid taxa are described: Proptychitina subordo nov., Ussuritina subordo nov., Subbalhaeceras shigetai gen. and sp. nov. (Flemingitidae), Mesohedenstroemia olgae sp. nov. He was educated at Dresden, Tharandt, Freiberg and Heidelberg. From 1842 till 1874 he held the professorship of geology at the Bergakademie Freiberg ("mining academy"). Botany at first attracted him, and he was one of the earliest to use the microscope in determining the structure of fossil plants. Later on he gave his attention to practical geology, to the study of ore-deposits, of rocks and metamorphism. He was regarded as an excellent teacher. His classification and description of rocks (a Treatise on Lithology which was translated by P.H. Lawrence in 1866) was the first comprehensive work on the subject issued in the English language, and it gave great impetus to the study of rocks in Britain. Bernhard von Cotta died at Freiberg on the 14th of September 1879. Middle Permian ammonoid faunas are recognized from the Hosoo and Kamiyasse Formations in the Kamiyasse-Imo district, north of Kesennuma, Southern Kitakami Massif, Northeast Japan. The fau- nas comprise the following genera: Parastacheoceras, Demarezites, Demarezites?, Waagenoceras, Timor- ites, Tauroceras?, Cardiella, Adrianites, Agathiceras, Agathiceras?, Paraceltites and Cibolites. Para- stacheoceras bidentatus gen. and sp. nov. is newly proposed. The genera Demarezites, Tauroceras, Cardiella and Adrianites are described for first time from Japan. Based on these ammonoids, the middle part of the Hosoo Formation, upper part of the Hosoo Formation to the lower middle part of the Kamiyasse Forma- tion, and upper middle part of the Kamiyasse Formation are correlatable with the Middle Permian Road- ian, Wordian and Capitanian, respectively.
