Doctor of Philosophy (Political Science), August 2008, 191 pp., bibliography of 227 titles. This dissertation addresses an ignored [partly for its controversial nature] aspect of Nietzschean philosophy: that of the role of modern woman in the creation of a future horizon. Details of the effects of the Enlightenment, Christianity and democracy upon society are discussed, as well as effects on the individual, particularly woman. After this forward look at the changes anticipated by Nietzsche, the traditional roles of woman as the eternal feminine, wife and mother are debated. An argument for the necessity of a continuation of the battle of the sexes, and the struggle among men and women in a context of sexual love and friendship is given. This mutual affirmation must occur through the motivation of pride and not vanity. In conclusion, I argue that one possible avenue for change is a Nietzschean call for a modern revaluation of values by noble woman in conjugation with her warrior scholar to bring about the elevation of mankind. -

POETRY, FEMINISM, AND PROTEST Introduction In this set of lessons, students will explore the often-overlooked relationship between poetry and politics. Poets like Anne Sexton, Adrienne Rich, and Audre Lorde create vital dialogue about the relationship between the daily lives of women and structures of power. The poems and essays below will be examined through a feminist-activist lens. Ø Anne Sexton, “Little Girl, My String Bean, My Lovely Woman” Ø Adrienne Rich, “Anne Sexton: 1928- 1974” Ø Audre Lorde, “Power” and “Poetry is Not a Luxury” Essential Question: Ø How can poetry serve as a form of feminist social protest? FOR THE TEACHER: ADRIENNE RICH AND ANNE SEXTON 1. Explain to students that after Anne Sexton took her own life in 1974, Adrienne Rich delivered a eulogy for Sexton, celebrating her poem “Little Girl, My String Bean, My Lovely Woman.” 2. Explain to the students how Sexton’s poem is central to Rich’s eulogy of Sexton and helps to better illustrate what Rich and others mean when they try and expand the definition of feminist poetry. 3. Ask your students to read the poem by Sexton and essay by Rich and to complete the attached questions. Then use those answers to inform a class discussion. 4. Feminist theorist bell hooks defines feminism as “a movement to end sexism, sexist exploitation, and oppression.” After students have answered the worksheet questions, share hooks’s definition of feminism and ask students to consider how Rich’s essay and Sexton’s poem address feminist ideas or goals. 5. For further reading: In a 2013 issue on women in fiction, Vice magaZine included a fashion spread of seven models depicting famous female writers who died by suicide, but without any mention of the writers’ works. -

The need is for a nexus amongst the different fragments of feminism to speak against customs of exploitation and subjugation, but not at the expense of the good culture of the land and in a way not to create loss of identity. To get the message across, some real stories must be told. Warriors as the Feminised Other The study of male heroes in Chinese action cinema from 2000 to 2009 A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Chinese Studies at the University of Canterbury by Yunxiang Chen University of Canterbury 2011 i Abstract ―Flowery boys‖ (花样少年) – when this phrase is applied to attractive young men it is now often considered as a compliment. This research sets out to study the feminisation phenomena in the representation of warriors in Chinese language films from Hong Kong, Taiwan and Mainland China made in the first decade of the new millennium (2000-2009), as these three regions are now often packaged together as a pan-unity of the Chinese cultural realm. The foci of this study are on the investigations of the warriors as the feminised Other from two aspects: their bodies as spectacles and the manifestation of feminine characteristics in the male warriors. This study aims to detect what lies underneath the beautiful masquerade of the warriors as the Other through comprehensive analyses of the representations of feminised warriors and comparison with their female counterparts. It aims to test the hypothesis that gender identities are inventory categories transformed by and with changing historical context. Simultaneously, it is a project to study how Chinese traditional values and postmodern metrosexual culture interacted to formulate Chinese contemporary masculinity. It is also a project to search for a cultural nationalism presented in these films with the examination of gender politics hidden in these feminisation phenomena. With Laura Mulvey‘s theory of the gaze as a starting point, this research reconsiders the power relationship between the viewing subject and the spectacle to study the possibility of multiple gaze as well as the power of spectacle. -

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by ResearchArchive at Victoria University of Wellington ON SHIFTING GROUND: Self-narrative, feminist theory and writing practice By Anne Else A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Victoria University of Wellington 2006 To Susan Moller Okin 1946-2004 Abstract This thesis centres on a problem that stands at the heart of feminist theory: how women may come to understand themselves as speaking subjects located within historically specific, discursive social structures, to question those structures aloud, and to seek to change them. It combines self-narrative, feminist theory and writing practice to make sense of a body of published work which I produced between 1984 and 1999, with a consistent focus on some form of gendered discourse, by setting it in its personal, historical, and theoretical contexts. Although the thesis is built around published work, it is not primarily about results or outcomes, but rather about a set of active historical processes. Taking the form of a spirally structured critical autobiography spanning five and a half decades, it traces how one voice of what I have termed feminist oppositional imagining has emerged and taken its own worded shape. First, it constructs a double story of coming to writing and coming to feminism, in order to explore the formation of a writing subject and show the critical importance of the connections between subjectivity and oppositional imagining, and to highlight the need to find ways of producing knowledge which do not rely on the notion of the detached observer. -

Turner 1 Nicole Turner Charles Klinetobe American History Since 1865 2 June 2019 Gender Representation in Film: Empowering Women One Role at a Time These past couple of years have made tremendous strides towards gender equality in media, and particularly film, on camera and behind the scenes. Between the Me Too movements and the fights for equal pay for men and women, the film industry has very publicly been shamed into making changes. But on screen there is a fight for equality as well. In 2014, a whopping 71.9% of speaking roles in film was attributed to men, leaving only 28.1% for female characters. However, in 2017 the percentage of female speaking roles jumped to 31.8% (MDSC Initiative “Distribution”). While the divide between men and women in film has lessened, it has not disappeared. Not to mention the female representation in film that could be even more harmful to gender equality. While quantity can contribute to representation, it is also important to look at the quality. Gender representation in media, particularly film, is unequal in it’s female concentrated blockbusters, female directors, and pay between female and male actors. Film is a giant industry. In 2016, $38.6 billion was made globally from movies. $27.2 billion of those dollars came exclusively from the box office*. The box office is a term that refers to the place where a ticket is sold. This means that a majority of money made from films is made from ticket sales to theaters. Following a basic business logic, that you should put your money towards the most profitable endeavors, this means that studios focus on producing movies that draw in moviegoers. -

iwanaga The ability of a small elite of highly educated, upper-class Asian women’s political women to obtain the highest political positions in their country is unmatched elsewhere in the world and deserves study. But, for participation and those interested in a more detailed understanding of how women representation strive and sometimes succeed as political actors in Asia, there is a women’s marked lack of relevant research as well as of comprehensive and in asia user-friendly texts. Mapping the Impact of Gender Equality Provisions and Constitutionmaking STUDENT WORKING PAPERS Penn Law Seminar on International Women’s Human Rights taught by Rangita de Silva de Alwis, Associate Dean of International Programs Report presented to UN Women and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights on May 6, 2016 MAPPING THE IMPACT OF GENDER EQUALITY PROVISIONS IN CONSTITUTIONS IN EMERGING DEMOCRACIES AND POST- CONFLICT INTRODUCTION The Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination of All Forms Against Women (CEDAW) and Security Council Resolution 1325 inspired us to examine the impact of constitutional gender equality provisions on women’s participation and legal protection. The United Nations General Assembly passed the CEDAW in 1979, and, since then, it has seen almost universal acceptance. The CEDAW brought and continues to bring critical attention to the importance of women’s international human rights and provides a framework for states to use in formulating national and local legislation that can and will protect those rights. Additionally, the Security Council Resolution 1325, passed in 2000, rallied all member states to recommit to bringing more women to the table in order to create, prevent, and ensure long lasting peace and tranquility. The Resolution called for women’s participation and protection to be at the forefront of each and every national and international agenda. Resolution 1325 led to subsequent resolutions, including 1820 and 2122, all of which advance women’s empowerment at the international level, and, with a top-down approach, aim to improve the lives of women all around the world. However, in order to have the most significant impact, the CEDAW and Resolution 1325 must be implemented domestically.
