All meetings are open to the public but no parishioners have attended during the last quarter. Highway matters have been prominent since the snow and ice. The lanes are not on the salting network and it is only thanks to individuals who took it upon themselves to spread the salt from the bins when necessary that helped to keep the roads accessible. The bins are placed at hazardous points by Devon County Council highways, to be available for use on the public highway only. Unauthorised removal of the salt from the bins had devastating effects on local people during the recent winter snow and ice. Due to limited resources the bins were not refilled as quickly as they might have been.

    The Holsworthy Mission Community News Your Church Your Parish Your Benefice Your Deanery Number 64 December 2016 Holsworthy Deanery Confrmation Service with Bishop Sarah A Holsworthy Mission Community Celebration of Confrmation Service was recently held at St. Peter ad Vincula Church, Ashwater to welcome 12 candidates from Holsworthy Church, and the Ashwater Benefce and one candidate from St. Hieretha's, Chittlehampton in the South Molton Deanery. The Rt. Rev. Sarah, Bishop of Crediton was the offciant and celebrant at the service, aided by Rev. Chris Penn, Rev. Kathy Roberts, Rev. Jane Lucas and Readers, Trevor May and Jim Williams. The candidates and their sponsors from Tetcott Church were Nick Wonnacott, Sharon Wonnacott and Nicky Mitchell, from Clawton Church Susanne Chantler and from Ashwater Di & Chloe Westaway. Richard Prouse, Laura Prouse and Charlotte Giordani from Holsworthy and Kelsie Cooling from Chittlehampton were called by name and had hands laid on them by Bishop Sarah and all made their promises to be followers of the Christian Way. The organ was played by Chris March and Church members were stewards. The church was flled with family members, friends of the candidates and supporters from around the Mission Community. After the candidates and everyone had taken their Communion, Bishop Sarah and everyone went to a Bring and Share Supper in Ashwater Parish Hall, which was enjoyed, thanks to those who helped and brought food to be shared. Currently Holsworthy Hamlets parish is in a ward with Holsworthy town & Sutcombe parish. Under the proposals, in an attempt to create new wards with roughly equivalent numbers of registered electors, the Boundary Commission proposal would sever Holsworthy Hamlets parish from Holsworthy town& place it in a new ward called “Milton & Tamarside”. The total number of district councillors across Torridge would remain unchanged at 36. The proposed Milton & Tamarside ward would comprise the nine parishes of Bradford, Bridgerule, Cookbury, Hollacombe, Holsworthy Hamlets, Milton Damerel, Pancrasweek, Pyworthy& Thornbury. The Boundary Commission proposals were discussed in detail at the recent meeting of Holsworthy Hamlets Parish Council. It was felt that the proposed nine parish ward, although useful in making a ward containing close to the target number of registered electors, is not practical in a rural, sparsely populated community like this one because of the vast geographical area that it would create to be covered by the district councillors in attending all the parish council meetings. It was felt that the likely outcome would be a disconnection of the electorate from their district councillors.

    PROGRESS REPORT ON THE 2007 BRADFORD & COOKBURY PARISH PLAN TO ILLUSTRATE HOW PARISHIONERS CONCERNS AND SUGGESTIONS HAVE BEEN ADDRESSED SINCE THAT TIME RECREATION & LEISURE: It was found that many of the suggestions put forwarded by parishioners at that time to improve our Parish have now been acted upon. It was found that most of the ideas for various clubs and activities do now occur within the parish, in surrounding villages or Holsworthy. ENVIRONMENT: The Brandis Corner Wildlife Group (BCWG) has been formed and is thriving with 100+ members. Bradford Footpath No. 6, Goosemoor to Laredo, has been re-established and a new signpost erected. The Gardening Club meets once a month and is flourishing. An annual plant sale is held in the Village Hall, which is always a success, the proceeds going to charity. Tree Preservation Orders have now been placed on many established trees in the Parish in addition to those already in place since 1949, which are along the A3072 from, and including, the Bickford Arms, towards Holsworthy. It is forbidden to tamper with these trees without prior authority from TDC/DCC. Strict monitoring is kept on the Devon banks and it is only in exceptional circumstances they may be interfered with, thus protecting nesting birds and keeping the wildlife corridors open. PARISH ASSETS With the decreasing availability of ambulances in our very rural area, the need is arising for night landing facilities for the Devon Air Ambulance helicopter. The provision of such a facility is being actively investigated by the parish council. Defibrillators: One is currently available at the Village Hall and another in progress for installation at Cookbury church.

An Eco-museum is a network of already existing sites (museums, attractions, activities, places) focused on the identity of a place, largely based on local participation and aiming to enhance the welfare and development of local communities. The Eco-museum can then be defined as a "museum made by the Community for the Community ", as the first users of this museum are just the inhabitants of the locality. It is a celebration of the past, an introduction to the present and a project for the future of the local community. The objective of the Eco-museum is to provide space where the community can research his recent or remote past, putting the spotlight, not only the objects of everyday life, but also landscapes, architecture, ancient knowledge and oral traditions . In fact, it also deals with the promotion of educational activities and research focusing on the direct involvement of the whole population and local institutions. There are presently about 300 operating Eco-museums in the world; about 200 are in Europe, mainly in France, Italy, Spain, and Poland1. The Eco-museum can be developed in different ways, for example: - there are Eco-museums comprising one museum where local information and archives are available for researches. Two examples are: Easdalemuseum (exhibits) and Kilmartin House Museum (exhibits and research library) - open air museums, like Skye Eco-museum and Dunaskin Open Air Museum in Scotland, Beamish Open- air museum in England - spread into the area with one big point of attraction, a world heritage site designated by UNESCO and focused around one theme such as Ironbridge & Pennine.
