SUMMARY

Project Name: Land at South Barn, Stratford Road Location: Deanshanger, Northamptonshire NGR: NGR SP 7696 3990 Type: Strip, map and sample investigation Date: 29th April - 7th May Location of Archive: Cotswold Archaeology’s Milton Keynes Office Site Code: SRD 13

In late April and early May 2013 an archaeological strip, map and sample investigation was undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology on land at South Barn, Stratford Road, Deanshanger in Northamptonshire. The fieldwork was carried out on behalf of Dr Peter Berkin in advance of the construction of a new dwelling on the site.

The investigation revealed four phases of field boundaries. The earliest two phases, from one of which a small assemblage of abraded, possibly Iron Age pottery, was recovered, may be Iron Age or Roman in date. The third phase of field boundary may be late medieval or post-medieval in date and vestiges of ridge and furrow cultivation represent the last phase of agricultural activity.

A number of shallow pits was also recorded. No finds were recovered from them and their date and function is uncertain, although some may have been excavated to recover limestone rubble.

The results of the archaeological project have provided further evidence for field boundaries within a landscape that was intensively farmed in the Iron Age and Roman periods. Excavations in 2011, less than 100m to the south of South Barn, recorded a series of field boundaries and a track way dating to the Roman period. These field systems probably formed part of the wider farming estate attached to the Roman villa recorded at Kingsbrook School, Deanshanger, c. 250m to the south-east of South Barn.

1. INTRODUCTION

1.1 In late April and early May 2013 Cotswold Archaeology (CA) carried out an archaeological strip, map and sample investigation for Dr Peter Berkin at South Barn Stratford Road, Deanshanger in Northamptonshire (centred on NGR: SP 7696 3990; Fig. 1). The investigation was undertaken to meet the requirements of a condition attached to planning permission (S/2012/0751/FUL) for the construction of a new dwelling adjacent to the existing South Barn.

1.2 The requirement for the investigation followed the advice of Liz Mordue, Assistant Archaeological Advisor, Northamptonshire County Council (AAANCC), archaeological advisor to Council (SNC), that important buried remains may be disturbed by the construction of the new dwelling. The AAANCC prepared a Brief for the investigation (2012) and CA (2012) prepared a Written Scheme of Investigation (WSI) to meet the requirements of the Brief. The WSI was approved by the AAANCC, on behalf of SNC, prior to the commencement of archaeological work on site.

1.3 The fieldwork also followed best practice as set out in the Standard and Guidance for Archaeological Excavation (IfA 2008), the Management of Archaeological Projects (English Heritage 1991) and the Management of Research Projects in the Historic Environment (MORPHE): Project Manager’s Guide (English Heritage 2006). It was monitored by Liz Mordue, AANCC, including site visits on Thursday 2nd and Tuesday 7th May 2013.

The site

1.4 South Barn is located to the east of the village of Deanshanger and north of the Stratford Road (Fig. 1). The proposed development will take place within the existing garden of South Barn (Fig. 2 and 5), which has open fields to the north and east, with a large residential development proposed in the field to the south. The site is generally flat, lying around the 75m OD contour, but with a slight fall to the south. The site lies on deposits of Limestone of the Jurassic Great Oolite Series (BGS Sheet 202).

Archaeological background

1.5 The archaeological background to the site was set out in the WSI and was based on a search of the Northamptonshire Historic Environment Record (HER). The study area for this search was a 500m radius centred on the proposed development site. The following paragraphs present a brief synthesis of the HER data. Sites are identified by their HER Event IDs (in bold).

1.6 Part of Deanshanger Conservation Area enters into the south-western edge of the study area. The proposed development site is outside of the Conservation Area boundary.

Prehistoric 1.7 Cropmarks visible on aerial photographs (ENN7853) show a series of possible prehistoric enclosures to the east of the current site; these have not been investigated archaeologically.

1.8 A possible Bronze Age round barrow (ENN105805) survives as an earthwork within the south-eastern edge of the study area.

Iron Age/Romano-British 1.9 Kingsbrook School lies to the south of Stratford Road. The school site has been subjected to a number of archaeological interventions (ENN7566, ENN105939, ENN7573, ENN7574, ENN7846, ENN17639, ENN103764, ENN103890) and geophysical surveys (ENN105936, ENN17638, ENN103762, ENN103763, ENN105938). These investigations have provided evidence for a probable Late Iron Age roundhouse and extensive Romano-British settlement activity, including a villa and numerous associated outbuildings. There was also evidence for Romano-British quarrying and agriculture.

1.10 An archaeological excavation to the north of Stratford Road immediately south of the current site uncovered a trackway and ditches dating to the late 1st century to early 2nd century AD (Northamptonshire Archaeology 2012).

Early medieval 1.11 The archaeological evaluation that preceded the excavation to the north of Stratford Road (ENN105615; CA 2010) revealed a wide, shallow feature containing Saxon

4 © Cotswold Archaeology South Barn, Stratford Road, Deanshanger, Northamptonshire: Strip, Map and Sample Investigation

pottery. This was interpreted as a possible sunken-floored building but no supporting evidence for the date and function of this feature was recorded during the subsequent excavation (Northamptonshire Archaeology 2012).

1.12 Late Saxon finds were also recovered during work on the Deanshanger by-pass (ENN12674).

Medieval 1.13 Deanshanger is probably a medieval foundation, although no associated settlement is recorded as far east as the proposed development site. The archaeological evaluation (ENN105615; CA 2010) and subsequent excavation (Northamptonshire Archaeology 2012) to the north of Stratford Road recorded the remains of ridge and furrow cultivation. Earthwork remains of ridge and furrow (ENN105805) survive within the south-eastern edge of the study area, and cropmarks suggestive of ridge and furrow have been recorded on aerial photographs (ENN7854).

Post-medieval 1.14 The Buckingham Arm of the passed to the immediate south of the proposed development site. This branch opened in 1801 and was abandoned in 1961. Its route is still visible as cropmarks (ENN7854).

1.15 Manor House lies at the south-western edge of the 500m study area. This early 18th century farmhouse is grade II listed (listed building no. 235262; ENN103054).

Undated 1.16 A number of undated quarrying pits are visible on aerial photographs (ENN7577).

Archaeological objectives

1.17 The objectives of the fieldwork as set out in the WSI were to identify and investigate any archaeological remains within the footprint of the proposed new building.

Methodology

1.18 The strip, map and sample investigation comprised of the continuous observation during the removal of topsoil, overburden and subsoil deposits within the footprint of the proposed new building.

5 © Cotswold Archaeology South Barn, Stratford Road, Deanshanger, Northamptonshire: Strip, Map and Sample Investigation

1.19 Where archaeological features were present, they were digitally planned, excavated and recorded in accordance with Technical Manual 1: Fieldwork Recording Manual (CA 2007).

1.20 The archive and artefacts from the fieldwork are currently held by CA at their offices in Milton Keynes. Subject to the agreement of the legal landowner, the artefacts, along with the site archive, will eventually be deposited with a county museum store, when this service is provided. A summary of information from this project, set out within Appendix C, will be entered onto the OASIS online database of archaeological projects in Britain.

2. RESULTS

2.1 This section provides an overview of the strip, map and sample investigation results. Detailed summaries of the recorded contexts and finds are to be found in Appendices A and B.

2.2 The geological substrate was recorded at a maximum depth of 1.16m below current ground surface in the north of the site with the natural gradient falling to approximately 0.9m to the south. The geological substrate ranged from a light, yellow-brown, loose limestone to a medium, yellow, sandy-clay ‘cornbrash’.

2.3 A series of archaeological features was cut through the geological substrate. Few finds were recovered to aid the dating of archaeological features but a tentative sequence of features is proposed.

2.4 Four shallow, circular pits (1012, 1014, 1021 and 1033), were recorded in the north of the site. They were no more than 0.98m in diameter and 0.37m deep (Fig. 4; Section BB; Fig. 6). None contained any artefacts but pit 1021 was cut by possible Iron Age ditch 1050. Five tree throws were also recorded in the same area of the site, two of which were also cut by possible Iron Age ditch 1050.

2.5 Ditches 1006 and 1037 were also cut by possible Iron Age ditch 1050. Both were no more than 0.72m wide and 0.16m deep (Fig. 4; Section EE). No artefacts were recovered from them.

6 © Cotswold Archaeology South Barn, Stratford Road, Deanshanger, Northamptonshire: Strip, Map and Sample Investigation

2.6 Ditch 1050, which was excavated in four places (1031, 1019, 1041, 1039), was no more than 0.58m wide and 0.14m deep (Fig. 4; Section CC and EE). It was aligned broadly east to west in the north of the site before turning at right angles to a broadly north-south alignment. It was therefore interpreted as a field boundary ditch, defining a square or rectangular field. Five sherds of possibly Iron Age pottery were recovered from its fills.

2.7 Ditch 1025, which was 0.48m wide and 0.05m deep, may have comprised a southern limb to the field defined by ditch 1050 but its relationship to ditch 1050 lay below a modern limestone surface. Ditch 1025 cut ditch 1043, which ran parallel to the north-south limb of ditch 1050. Ditch 1043 was 0.75m wide and 0.1m deep (Fig. 4; Section DD). All three ditches, 1050, 1025 and 1043, may represent components of a ditched field system.

2.8 Two large, shallow pits, 1008 and 1016, were recorded in the west of the site. They were 0.44m and 0.33m deep respectively (Fig. 4; Section AA). Both features were irregular in plan and both may have been excavated for the recovery of limestone rubble. No artefacts were recovered from either feature.

2.9 Pit 1008 was cut on its northern edge by ditch 1023. This ditch was aligned on a broadly north-east to south-west alignment. It may have continued in the east of the site as ditch 1051 (excavated in two sections as 1027 and 1029), from which a sherd of late medieval or post-medieval ceramic tile was recovered (Fig. 4; Section CC).

2.10 Ditch 1051 was cut by a furrow, 1048, aligned north-west to south-east. A second furrow, 1046, was recorded some 5m to the west. These are the remnants of ridge and furrow cultivation.

2.11 The latest features on the site were recent or modern in date and include the foundations for a garden wall and a plastic land drain.

The finds evidence

2.12 The recovered artefactual material is listed in Appendix B. Pottery, which is tentatively dated to the Iron Age period was recovered from two deposits, fills 1040 and 1042 of ditch 1050. The five sherds of pottery (17g) are unfeatured and the suggested dating is based on characteristics of fabric/firing (Appendix B). In addition

7 © Cotswold Archaeology South Barn, Stratford Road, Deanshanger, Northamptonshire: Strip, Map and Sample Investigation

to the Late Prehistoric pottery, a tile fragment in a hard orange firing fabric suggestive of late medieval or post-medieval dating was recovered from fill 1030 of ditch 1051 and a (modern) cement mortar fragment from topsoil 1001.

3. DISCUSSION

3.1 The strip, map and sample exercise at South Barn recorded a number of archaeological features but, unfortunately, few artefacts to provide information on the date and purpose of those features. On this basis the features most likely represent agricultural activities rather than settlement or occupation on or near to the site.

3.2 At least four phases of field systems or boundaries were recorded. The earliest, represented by ditches 1006 and 1037 on a north-west to south-east alignment, was cut by a square or rectangular field boundary, ditch 1050. Five sherds of possible Iron Age pottery were recovered from ditch 1050 but their small size and abraded nature suggests they may have been residual.

3.3 The third phase of field boundary was represented by ditches 1023 and 1051. A piece of ceramic tile of late medieval or post-medieval date was recovered from this boundary. Vestiges of ridge and furrow cultivation earthworks represented the last phase of agricultural activity on the site.

3.4 A series of shallow pits was recorded in the north of the site. None contained any artefacts, although stratigraphically some may be of Iron Age or earlier date. Their purpose is unknown but some at least may have been excavated for the recovery of limestone rubble.

3.5 The results of the archaeological project have provided further evidence for field boundaries within a landscape that was intensively farmed in the Iron Age and Roman periods. Excavations in 2011, less than 100m to the south of South Barn, recorded a series of field boundaries and a track way dating to the Roman period (Northamptonshire Archaeology 2012). None entirely correspond to the alignments of the field boundaries recorded at South Barn, although the ‘trackway’ in Area 2, was on a similar alignment to ditch 1050 at South Barn.

8 © Cotswold Archaeology South Barn, Stratford Road, Deanshanger, Northamptonshire: Strip, Map and Sample Investigation

3.6 Collectively these field systems were probably part of the wider farming estate of the Roman villa recorded at Kingsbrook School, Deanshanger, c. 250m to the south- east of South Barn (Brown 2006). Here a villa building was in existence by at least the 2nd century AD. It may have had an Iron Age antecedent but the evidence is equivocal. There was a series of agricultural enclosures to the east of the villa building demonstrating the agricultural basis of the economy of the villa.

4. CA PROJECT TEAM
