Example Outdoor Classroom Project Plan: CARDINAL DIRECTIONS SIGN

 Cardinal Directions Sign – A cardinal directions sign includes a wooden post with (4) planks attached pointing in four different directions (north, east, south & west) with “North ,” “South ,” “East ,” and “West ” etched onto the planks. (See the design below) Optional Addition: Add (4) planks pointing in four different directions (north, northeast, east, southeast, south, southwest, west or northwest). Then pick out four cities or landmarks that are in four different directions from your location, and etch the names of the locations along the number of miles the locations are located from you. For example, if your school is in Huntsville, you could etch the following on the four planks: “Memphis (225 miles west) ”, “Washington D.C. (750 miles northeast) ”, “Montgomery (200 miles south) ” and “Atlantic Ocean (600 miles east) ”

 Location Requirements:  Near Weather Station if possible

Dir. Cardinal Directions Sign (N, E, S & W): EST COST: Sign Demonstrates the four different cardinal $55-65 directions (north, east, south & west). Optional Addition: Add specific cities and distances as references such as “Washington D.C. (750 miles north) ”, “Montgomery (200 miles south) ” , etc.

Letters on Sign need to be at least 4 inches tall to be seen from 40 ft away…

 Construction Instructions: . Determine which direction is North, South, East & West in your Outdoor Classroom area. . Put a 6 ft tall 4”x4” Post in an 18 inch hole with the sides of the 4x4 facing North & South and East & West AND the corners pointing NE, SE, SW, & NW. . Backfill the hole with dirt or concrete. . Attach (4) 2ft long 2”x4” Boards along the (4) sides of the 4x4 with one board pointing North, one pointing East, one pointing South, & the last pointing West. . Paint “North,” “East,” “South,” & “West” on the appropriate boards.
