En compagnie de Nathalie Mauclair ainsi que d’un professionnel de la discipline, vous aborderez les aspects essentiels d’une bonne préparation physique et mentale pour boucler cette course de légende. Prise en charge des bagages par notre transporteur et briefing avant le départ. Mise en jambes sur les sentiers rejoignant Les Houches. Une belle première montée par le col de la Voza (1653 m) qui nous conduit à Saint Gervais par ces alpages. Pique-nique sur Saint Gervais avant de remonter le fond de vallée sur Les Contamines puis Notre Dame de la Gorge. Une dernière montée sur la voie romaine pour atteindre notre gîte du soir avec le repas : le Nant Borrant. ▪ JOUR 2 : COUTAMINES - COURMAYEUR 43km, 2760m D+, 10 à 11 heures de rando course environ Une étape sérieuse sur un terrain plus accidenté et le franchissement de splendides cols d’altitude : cols de la Croix-du-Bonhomme (2329 m), de la Seigne (2516 m) et de Chécrouit (1953 m). Dans un décor époustouflant, nous courons un véritable marathon des montagnes ; il nous faudra bien prendre en compte la gestion de notre effort. Nuit et repas au gîte d'étape le Monte Bianco. ▪ JOUR 3 : COURMAYEUR – CHAMPEX 45km, 2430m D+, 10 à 11 heures de rando course environ Nous traverserons des paysages grandioses faisant face aux Grandes Jorasses, nous emprunterons le Grand Col Ferret pour passer en Suisse. Très belle descente sur le joli petit village de la Fouly pour rester en fond de vallée avant de remonter sur Champex et son lac émeraude par le chemin aux champignons. Dîner et nuit au gîte le bon abri ▪ JOUR 4 : CHAMPEX – CHAMONIX 44km, 2500m D+, 10 à 11 heures de rando course environ Direction les alpages de Bovine avec vue sur les glaciers majestueux du Valais Suisse ! Une première descente sur Trient qui est le dernier bastion Suisse avant de remonter sur Catogne et la frontière Française. Direction Vallorcine pour le pique-nique du midi puis une dernière montée à la Tête au vent qui permet d'observer la mer de glace avec tous les massifs mythiques du Mont Blanc. Séance d’étirements et relaxation avant les derniers échanges de la fin du stage. Ce programme peut être modifié à tout moment par le professionnel encadrant en fonction des conditions climatiques, des aptitudes physiques et techniques des participants et de la disponibilité des hébergements. En dernier ressort, il reste seul juge du programme. Autumn 2011 The reason that I am able to write this report about my most epic journey of trails and the mind is all down to two separate incidents both connected to my very good friend Paul Appleby. The first was Paul’s inspiring account of the 2011 CCC where he brought to life a magic kingdom of ultra running not without its dark moments and aroused a curiosity within. The second quirk of fate occurred a few weeks later when I picked up a flyer for the 2012 Hardmoors Series in the Newcastle Hotel after the Simonside Cairns race, which of course Paul organizes. Although I had sufficient qualifying points for the CCC I had never run (?) further than the 37 miles of the Old County Tops and doubted if I could go further but then again there was only one way to find out. January – July 2012 I submitted an entry for the CCC in early January, which in effect meant that I was entered into a ballot, with around a 1 in 2 chance of being accepted but lady luck shined on me. I was in, no turning back, so better get some serious training in. I then embarked upon a series of “long days in the hills”; Lammermuirs and Pentlands in the Lothians, BG reccies a la Ms Scott and random days out in the Lakes, a long reccie of the Hardmoors 55 route in late February with Paul and Dave Wiseman and then the race itself a month later.

    No gun went off. For Oregon’s David Laney, the start of this year’s Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc in Chamonix, France, came as a surprise. “I saw race director Catherine Poletti grab the microphone. She said something in French, and suddenly everyone was running through the streets of Chamonix.” “A moment before, I had been kidding around with Kilian.” Kilian Jornet, arguably the world’s most accomplished mountain runner, had already won UTMB three times. “Kilian was live on Facebook with his phone. I couldn’t believe it. He filmed me sitting down, tying my shoes, and asked, ‘Resting legs?’ We both laughed.” As Laney sprinted past metal barriers keeping thousands of boisterous onlookers at bay, I was 2,000 runners back in a lycra and Gore-Tex mob. Had the UTMB started, or had U2 tickets suddenly gone on sale? The resulting crush was very nearly the same. I moved with the swarm, dodging errant trail-running poles. THE “I could get injured in the world’s most famous trail race,” I thought, “before ever reaching the start line.” A minute later, I crossed over the timing mat, and my own UTMB was under way. Famous for its festive atmosphere and wildly engaged DREAM crowds, the UTMB winds its way around the glacier-capped Mont-Blanc range on the centuries-old Tour du Mont- Blanc footpath, passing through 19 villages in France, Italy and Switzerland.
