LETTERS HOME

From Maj Dave Traynor (1969-1985): “After retiring and moving to Kansas in 1985, I was at Ft Leavenworth as an Air Threat Analyst for 9 years. In 1994 I, along with 4 fellow analysts, were assigned to the Threat Office at the Training/Doctrine Command (TRADOC) at Ft Monroe VA. I retired there in June 2003 after 40 years of combined federal and military service. My wife Pam and I stayed there to take advantage of the military health care facilities at Langley AFB. Our three children (Tami, Stephen, and Bryan) are married with families. Tami graduated from Michigan in 1988, moved to Philadelphia, and graduated from the Temple University law school in 1992. Bryan graduated from Michigan in 1992 and stayed until 1994 for a Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering. Our oldest son Steve attended the University of Kansas, transferred to Western Kentucky, and graduated in 1995. He is teaching at a middle school in Temple TX. Tami lives in suburban Philadelphia PA, and Bryan is in Austin TX where I grew up. Between the three of them I have 6 grandchildren, 5 granddaughters and 1 grandson. Sadly, my wife Pam passed away on 12 Feb 15. She had a number of illnesses over the past 16 years dating from gastric bypass surgery in 1979. She passed away after emergency surgery for a perforated intestine which got infected during recovery. We were married for 49 years, 20 months, and 1 day. The past year has been rough but family, friends, neighbors and keeping busy has helped. Pam is buried at the Arlington National Cemetery where I’ll be someday.”

From LCDR John Woelfel (VP-93, Ret): “I flew for Northwest Airlines then Delta Airlines. I just retired in November 2016. I enjoy everything in the MANGBANG – it’s great!”

From CMSgt Dave Snavely (1973-2007): “I have been busy doing things I didn’t have time for while working including camping, travelling, working in my woodworking shop, fishing, and hunting. My wife Andria and I took a three month road trip to Alaska from 26 May thru 26 August 2010, a trip I would highly recommend to all who have not had the opportunity. Each year since retirement I have gone on fishing trips to Canada with retired CMSgt and friend Al Ratz. We always catch a lot of fish and have a great time. Andria and I have wintered in Naples FL since retirement; 2 of our 6 children live there and we enjoy visiting with them and our 4 Naples grandchildren during the winter months. In July of 2015 I went to my oldest son’s retirement ceremony. Mike had a 24-year career with the Air Force as a jet engine mechanic and retired as a MSgt. That will make a person realize how fast time is passing!

From Capt Donald O. Peterson (USNR 1953-1993 VP-93, Ret): “I own and manage Mississippi Welder’s Supply Co”

th 127 Wing Commander to Retire

After more than 35 years of service to the nation Brig. Gen. John D. Slocum, Selfridge Air National Guard Base commander announces his plans to retire from military service in May.

"It's with mixed emotions and sincere gratitude that I announce my retirement from the Air National Guard," said General Slocum. However, I am confident the great advancements we've made within the 127th Wing and the strong community partnerships we've built will be carried forward by our outstanding Airmen."

General Slocum has been the 127th Wing and Selfridge Air National Guard Base commander since November 2014. During his tenure at the helm of the Wing, along with the men and women who serve here, has achieved countless milestones. Most notably, the Wing was presented the Meritorious Unit Award for record of performance both in, and in support of, combat operations, the Carl A. Spaatz Award for being the top National Guard flying unit in the nation, and the Macomb County Economic Development Partner of the Year for 2018.

The community celebrated the base's year-long centennial anniversary culminating in an airshow and open house earning the Wing two International Council of Airshow Gold Pinnacle Awards. There have been several successful deployments of both flying units including Combat Deployments, Operations Northern Strike and Saber Strike, as well as exemplary inspections, and the Wing's participation in last year's 74th Anniversary D-Day celebration. In addition, General Slocum was inducted into the Macomb County Hall of Fame and presented an Honorary Doctorate in Laws from Walsh College.

"I am profoundly honored and humbled to have the opportunity to serve beside so many great Michiganders - in and out of uniform," he said. "This has been the pinnacle of my military career."

General Slocum received his Air Force commission through East Carolina University's ROTC, Det. 600, in 1984, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in political science. He is a command pilot with more than 4,100 flying hours. He has flown several aircraft to include the F-4 Phantom, the F-16 Falcon, the A-10 Warthog, and the KC-135 Stratotanker.

There will be a Change of Command Ceremony on base May 5th where General Slocum will pass the Wing guidon to Col. Rolf E. Mammen, currently the Director of Operations, Headquarters Michigan Air National Guard.

There are tentative plans for retirement events in town likely on Thursday 9 May and other dates. More information to follow as plans solidify.

I can’t begin to express my gratitude and my wide-ranging appreciation for all of the support, friendship, and partnerships that we’ve forged during the last 4 ½ years. I am looking forward to exploring opportunities and getting engaged in new ways with our amazing community.

Respectfully in your service !

5 Base Community Council Helps out Furloughed Members U.S. Coast Guard – Air Station

Michelle Parker an Executive Board Member of the Selfridge Base Community Council provided support and encouragement from the BCC to furloughed members of U.S.C.G. Detroit. (U.S. Air National Guard photos by Taz Joarder). Hometown Heroes Hotline

The 127th Wing, as mentioned at the January Base Community Council meeting, held 15 January 2019, is looking for community partners to help support the families of deployed military members. The 127th Wing has created a 24-hour hotline to provide support for the families of members of the 127th WG deployed overseas. The intent of this hotline is to be a focal point for the spouses of deployed members that need emergency support while the military member is deployed. When the hotline is called, families of deployed members are put into direct contact with 127th WG leadership. Once the support needed is determined, the 127th WG will contact community partners that have committee to provide emergency help. I am reaching out to all BCC members to consider participating as a volunteer provider to this now functioning hotline. Since the most current deployment last week, there have been calls received to assist in furnace repair and assistance with snow removal. With record/brutal weather conditions predicted for the upcoming week, it would be fantastic if we could have enough volunteers to guarantee immediate responses to challenges occurring for our dedicated families of deployed military. If you or someone you know volunteers to participate as part of the 24-hour hotline, you will be placed on a contact list available to the 127th Wing Commander, Command Chief, and First Sergeant. Discounted services are strongly encouraged, but not required to be put on the list. Anticipated needs include, but are not limited to: 1) home repair, 2) appliance repair, 3) auto repair, 4) child care. To volunteer or for more information, contact SMSgt Bryon Harvey, 586-713- 5510 or [email protected].

New Program Matches Michigan National Guard Members, Reservists with Civilian Jobs

110th Attack Wing Facebook Page (https://www.facebook.com/110AWBCANG/)

A new public-private initiative aims to reduce unemployment and underemployment among Michigan National Guard and Reserve members by connecting them with career-oriented jobs that fit their specific skillsets and qualifications. Tim Loney, Deputy Director of the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency (MVAA), signed a memorandum of agreement Thursday with Lt. Gen. Gregory Vadnais, Adjutant General and Director of the Michigan Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA), to officially launch the Guard Reserve Interview Promise (GRIP) as a pilot program. Under GRIP, military-friendly employers promise to interview Guard/Reserve members whose military occupational qualifications meet appropriate job opening classifications as determined by a workforce assessment with the employer. The one-year pilot will target the Michigan National Guard, which has about 11,000 members, before expanding to the Reserves. About 10 employers will participate in the pilot, including Comerica, Inc., with the MVAA’s full list of more than 270 Veteran-Friendly Employers expected to participate eventually.

“Our National Guard members and Reservists have sometimes struggled with finding a good job that suits their considerable skills and talents,” Loney said. “The GRIP program addresses this problem head-on by establishing a talent pipeline between the Guard/Reserve and our Veteran-Friendly Employers.” 8 The MVAA is working with employers on the workplace assessments, determining which job openings match up with military occupations. At any one time, Comerica, for example, may have dozens of openings for loan officers and loan processors across the state, and these jobs may line up well with an Army financial manager (36A) or financial technician (36B), or even a human resource specialist (42A), which has a strong customer service focus. In the past, some employers were hesitant to hire or retain National Guard members because of their two-week summer training commitment and possibility of deployment overseas, forcing these patriots to find less than optimal work outside their chosen civilian career path. But the MVAA and other veteran-friendly organizations have helped turn this problem around by educating employers on the value veterans bring through their work ethic, leadership, team- player mentality, and ability to learn new things. The unemployment rate for veterans in Michigan fell from 10.6 percent in 2013 to 3.6 percent in 2017, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Many companies today are having trouble finding enough skilled workers. The GRIP program can help fill this demand by providing employers with a valuable source of quality talent in National Guard and Reserve members. Vadnais said the program also serves as a recruiting and retention tool for National Guard and Reserve units by providing direct access to qualified employers. “The number one reason people leave the National Guard is for employment purposes – they relocate to take a job out of state, for example,” Vadnais said. “The Guard is a part-time force, and that makes civilian employment extremely important to us. Having the ability to offer our people access to good civilian jobs benefits all parties – the service member, the employer, and the National Guard and Reserves.”

About the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency: Created by Executive Order in 2013, MVAA’s mission is to be the central coordinating agency, providing support, care, advocacy and service to veterans and their families. The agency works with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, state departments, county agencies, and community and veterans service organizations throughout the state. The Agency operates the Michigan Veteran Resource Service Center, a 24/7/365 call center in partnership with Michigan 211. By calling 800-MICH-VET (800-642-4838) veterans, family members and service providers can get information and access a comprehensive network of resources and services.

13 This Day in History…. April 1 1962 Volunteer pilots and ground support personnel from the Michigan Air Guard’s 172nd Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron began training at Kirtland AFB, New Mexico for Operation Blue Straw, nuclear tests conducted at Christmas Island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The 172nd was one of the five ANG units that participated in Blue Straw that year. Flying specially equipped RB-57s, their pilots flew through clouds of nuclear dust to gather samples for study.

April 2 2004 Approximately 150 soldiers of the 119th Field Artillery Regiment, working alongside elements of the U.S. Marine Corps, help to repel the largest attack on a U.S. military base since the Vietnam War, during the Battle of Abu Ghraib.

April 7 1941 The Band, 119th Field Artillery, is organized in Lansing. The band is the direct predecessor of today’s 126th Army Band of the Michigan National Guard

April 9 2002 Carol Ann Fausone is the first woman in the Michigan National Guard to be promoted to the rank of brigadier general. A nurse and a member of the Michigan Air National Guard, BG Fausone was also the first Michigan medical officer to achieve the rank of a general officer.

April 14 1831 John E. Schwarz was named adjutant general for the Michigan Territory. A native of Austria, he came to Michigan in 1928, working as part of John Jacob Astor’s fur trading enterprise. He served as adjutant general for the Michigan Territorial Militia beginning in 1831 and continued to hold that position after Michigan became a state in 1837, leaving that post in 1839. In 1844, he was appointed adjutant general of the state militia again, serving through 1855. Schwarz is the only person to have served as adjutant general in Michigan more than one time.

April 25 1861 The East Saginaw Guards and the Flint Grays are combined to form the 2nd Michigan Volunteer Infantry Regiment, for service in the Union Army during the Civil War. Elements of the unit have been part of the Michigan National Guard ever since, serving today as the 1st Battalion, 125th Infantry Regiment.

April 26 1898 The U.S. declared war against Spain on 25 April 1898, and Camp Eaton near Brighton was established, in name at least, the next day. In reality, the camp didn’t get set up until the middle of June, when the various companies of volunteers began arriving at the camp to muster in and to be known as the First Regiment Michigan Volunteer Reserve Infantry and later as the 35th Michigan Infantry. On 1 July, Col. Edwin M. Irish arrived to take command of the regiment, which consisted of 1,328 men. Here is the text of an historical marker found in Brighton: “This was once the summer camp of Michigan’s National Guard. Here in 1898 the five regiments, which were recruited in the state during the war with Spain, were organized. Ten men volunteered for every one [man] who could be accepted. Two of the units, the 33rd and 34th Michigan Infantry, saw action in Cuba during June and July 1898, in the fighting around Santiago. The 31st Regiment served in the occupation of Cuba. The 32nd and 35th remained in the United States. Of the nearly 6,700 men who served in these regiments, 250 were fatalities. Most of these deaths resulted from disease, not battle action. In 1900, the camp was used as the site of an annual encampment training session for the Michigan National Guard. Shortly thereafter, and exact records are murky, the camp was disbanded and eventually set aside as a recreation area owned and operated by the state.”

Planning stages have begun for the Second Annual Historic Tea held on the grounds of the Selfridge Military Air Museum. We’re still in the process of lining up the speaker and caterer, and confirming the date, but we’re hoping to hold it on Saturday, 20 July 2019 @ 11 a.m.

Library Research Team:

Ongoing projects in the library are the digitization of the photos and documents in our multiple file cabinets and the creation of an index of our archival holdings. Regular volunteers, Pat Williams and Mary Lou Pearsall along with Team Chief, Lori Nye are the ones working on this project. Volunteer, Joe Mazzara is continuing his research on and biographical sketch of the Base Commanders @ Selfridge Field through the present day. He has been given a couple of other projects to work on when the going gets slow on his initial project. They are building/updating the history files on the various units/squadrons that have been assigned to Selfridge over the years and organizing our Aircraft Accidents files and adding to them with any information he can gleam from other sources. Patrick, our newest volunteer, is still waiting on his computer to be updated with a new version of Microsoft Access, before he retackles building an updated/current database of library’s book collection and adding all the “new” books that the library has received over the last two years, while we’ve been waiting for the software/computer upgrade. While attending the last Base Community Council meeting held at the Dining Facility on base, Lori scouted out, with the assistance of Phil Ulmer, Chief of Public Affairs, 127th Wing, an historical plaque that hangs in the old Base Chapel. This plaque lists the pilots from the 94th “Hat-in-the-Ring” Aero Squadron (Pursuit) or 94th Fighter Interceptor Squadron from 1918 through 1959, reported missing or killed in the line of duty. The 94th Aero Squadron (Pursuit) was assigned to then Selfridge Field as part of the 1st Pursuit Group in 1917, leaving to go to France for World War I. It returned to Selfridge Field and remained there up to the beginning of World War II. The squadron’s current home is at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia and has been redesignated the 94th Fighter Squadron.

Information was provided to Bruce Gregory on a license plate topper from Selfridge Field, 1941. The plate is currently owned by Bruce, though as Bruce shared with us, it previously was owned by draftee, Charles Collyer of Redford Township, who was inducted into the U.S. Army on 18 April 1941.The topper plate generally measures about 10” x 3.5”. Holes are drilled in the plate top and bottom, so that the plate could be affixed to the top or bottom of the state issued license plate for the vehicle. The year, 1941, (on right) is the year issued. Numbers on left (2-32) may be the number in a sequence of plates that were issued that year. Lori Nye, Library Team Chief, with the assistance of Bob Hudson, Museum’s Assistant Director and Dave Leasia, Team Chief, Grounds and Information Technology set up the display for January- February 2019 at the Anton Art Center during their Michigan XLVI. Here are a few photos from the display.

Indian Deed between the Ocipwe (Chippewa) Indian Nation and William Tucker, signed in Detroit on 22 September 1780. William Tucker had been a captive/slave of the Ocipwe. He was given his freedom and as much land along the shores of Lake St. Clair as he could pace off from sunrise to sunset. Tucker’s land along with that of others became what is now known as Selfridge Air National Guard Base.

On left is a painting by Marii Chernev, a Bulgarian-born artist, of Major Royce in a P-6 Curtiss Hawk over Selfridge Field. This painting depicts the original gat to Selfridge off of Joy Blvd and Jefferson Avenue (before I-94 was built).

This display for 2019 took the history of Selfridge Field basically through the 1930s up to the Korean War. Stay tuned for 2020 & Michigan XLVII, when we do 1950s to 1971.

Restoration Team: The Restoration Team led by Darrel Rohrbeck is continuing their steady progress on restoring the Museum’s FG-1D Corsair. Steady progress has been made and one wing is done with maybe some additional minor work, ready to paint, and work is progressing on the 2nd wing. Here is a photo (below) of the finished wing. Check out the Museum’s website @ www.selfridgeairmuseum.org, if you’re interested in donating to this worthy cause.

Before & after photo of left wing.

Grounds Team: The Grounds Team volunteers are sort of quiet this time of year. Most of the regular crew is either enjoying the balmy weather in sunny Florida or just relaxing at home getting geared up for the upcoming season.

Visual Information Team: They’re taking a break this time of year, though their Team Chief, Rob Sandstrom has been helping with some videos for the redesign of the Museum’s display.

Visual Information Team: They’re taking a break this time of year, though their Team Chief, Rob Sandstrom has been helping with some videos for the redesign of the Museum’s display. Stand-by to see the redesign on Opening Day 2019, 6 April. Jon has completed the photographic inventory of the completed uniforms in our collection and will soon be starting on scanning the oversize negatives in our collection.

Maintenance Team: Haven’t heard anything of what this crew has been up to over the winter months, but they’ve been seen around the Museum helping out wherever they’ve been needed.

Information Technology: Fred Durr was seen last week working on the Museum’s R2800 engine display so it’s ready to go for our 2019 season. Dave Leasia, Team Chief, has been helping out wherever needed with the Museum’s display redesign and keeping the Network functioning and everyone on our fine team of volunteers happy … not an easy task!

Redesign of Museum Display: Over the last few months the museum display has been undergoing a redesign. So make sure you stop by on/after our ‘Opening Day, 6 April 2019’ to check it out!

MAGHA MEMBERS – We Need YOU!

Please consider volunteering as a weekend docent in the Gift Shop, Flight Training area, SPAD Hangar, or as an Inside/Outside floater. Your volunteering will continue to promote the history of the Air National Guard @ Selfridge and ONLY YOU have unique stories to tell of YOUR time serving. We’re also looking ‘for a few good men & women’ to serve as volunteers on the Tuesday & Friday gigs, but our weekend docents really need a “boost” in numbers!!!!!!!! If volunteering as a weekend docent, standard procedure is about 10 days per season, but if you can only give the museum two to four, don’t let that stop you from applying. We may have funds to keep the Museum operational, but without docents, we don’t have a Museum! Maybe even get your spouse interested in volunteering with you as a “team”. You can obtain the Volunteer Application Form from the Museum’s website http://www.selfridgeairmuseum.org, or call the Museum Director and he’ll send you the application (586-239-6768; or email: [email protected]. If interested in joining our Tuesday/Friday group of volunteers, here are the areas where we desperately need help. Look for the areas with an asterisk *.

MEMORIAL WALL

SELFRIDGE MILITARY AIR MUSEUM

The Michigan Air Guard Historical Association (MAGHA) has completed construction of a Memorial Area in the center of the Air Park at the Selfridge Military Air Museum. The memorial is a place to honor all members of the military who gave their lives in the line of duty and in the service of this great nation, to recognize all those who have in the past or who are currently serving their country, and to acknowledge the contributions made by families and companies to the preservation of freedom. Pictures of the Memorial Area and the Memorial Wall are above. The centerpiece is an elevated F-86 Sabre aircraft, an aircraft flown, maintained, and supported by three Michigan Air Guard units in the mid-1950s. Flanking the F-86 is the Memorial Wall topped by engraved Memorial Bricks such as those shown below.

We invite you to become part of this memorial and to recognize a unit, an individual, or a family by purchasing an engraved b rick that will become a permanent part of the Memorial Wall. Cash donations for the Memorial project are also welcome. All memorial brick purchases and donations for this effort are tax-deductible per Section 170 of the Internal Revenue Service Code. Engraved memorial bricks cost $100.00 per brick for non-members (cost includes a one-year membership in MAGHA), $75.00 per brick for members, and $50.00 per brick when multiple brick orders are made. For example, a one-brick order from a MAGHA member would cost $75.00, a two-brick order would cost $125.00, and a three-brick order $175.00. Information about MAGHA can be obtained by calling 586-239-6768, by visiting our web site at www.selfridgeairmuseum.org, or by writing to us at the address below.
