Dr. Don McGarey Head Coach/Middle Distance-5th Season Louisiana State University

Middle Distance Outlook: “I hope to see our middle distance squad continue to domi- nate. We return all of our top placers from last year including Gianni Catalano, Daniel Grass, Michael Guntner, Piotr Witczak and Jaakko Nieminen. Piotr and Jaakko are coming off an outstanding cross-country season and have greatly improved their longer distance racing. Gianni, Dan and Mike are a formidable trio in the 800. On the women’s side, we have made adjustments by moving some of the middle distance runners to longer distance, and a few 400 meter runners up to 800 meters. Last year we scored poorly at conference in the women’s middle distance events and I am hoping to turn this around. It may require some of our top distance runners such as Erin Sutton and Mackenzie Howe to broaden their events to include middle distance. Caitlin German is our lone middle distance runner from last year that is still with the group and is expected to have a big impact.”

Dr. Don McGarey returns for his fifth season as the head coach of the program he helped build, Kennesaw State men’s and women’s track and field . With the Owls now eligible for NCAA Regional and National competition after successfully completing the NCAA’s mandatory four-year re-classification period, McGarey is excited to see what the future holds for his athletes and is poised to take a program that has already seen 162 athletes be named to All- Atlantic Sun teams in their first four years to untold heights.

McGarey competed in both cross country and track as a scholarship athlete, first at Santa Fe Community College in Gainesville, FL and then at Louisiana State University. After finishing his eligibility at LSU and graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in mi- crobiology, he stayed on as a graduate assistant coach for three years.

After earning his Ph.D. from South Florida in biology and completing a post-doctoral research study at the , Mc- Garey became an Assistant Professor of Biology at Jacksonville State University in Alabama. It was there that he returned to coaching as an Assistant Coach for the Gamecock’s cross-country teams.

McGarey came to Kennesaw State University as an Associate Professor in 1998 and joined Stan Sims’ coaching staff with men’s and women’s cross country in 1999. He infused new practice regiments into the program that helped develop some of the University’s greatest runners.

Prior to the formation of a full-fledged track and field program at KSU, McGarey and Sims would take their cross country runners to compete in distance events at track meets during the spring, and got a taste of what success could be like on the flat surface. Four of his runners would attain All-American status, and two-time NCAA Division II Cross Country National Champion Marjo Venalainen would add to her trophy case, winning the Division II National Championship in the 1500 and 3000 Meter events in 2001. Addition- ally, three other runners competed at nationals and several more made national qualifying provisional times.

In 2005, the KSU Athletic Department was facing the monumental challenge of putting together a track & field program from scratch. Thanks to his success as assistant coach for the cross country team and overseeing the distance runners during track season, McGarey was chosen to be the head coach for the new Division I indoor and outdoor track programs.

Building a program from the bottom up was not new to McGarey as he was part of the LSU program in the 1980’s when it transitioned from a respectable program to a track and field powerhouse. McGarey assembled a lineup of athletes from the cross country team that could make a significant impact as distance runners in track. He then focused on building a team of talented sprinters and throwers to round out his roster of athletes.

In 2006, their first year of competition, the men’s team was able to place second at the Atlantic Sun Outdoor Track and Field Champi- onship on the strength of their runners. Five runners won individual titles, and their 4 x 400 Meter Relay team was victorious, as well. Another seven earned All-Conference honors in their inaugural year.

As each season goes by the track & field team becomes a more defined program under McGarey’s leadership. The roster continues to expand as more and more of the top talent in the South and in the country discover the strong foundation for a winning program that Coach McGarey is putting together.

Dr. McGarey is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biology and Physics at Kennesaw State University. Don, his wife Toni and their children Alix and Chance make their home in Kennesaw, GA. Stan Sims Associate Head Coach/Distance-5th Season University of Florida Distance Outlook: “I’m really excited for the indoor season to start and for our runners to get out there on the track and show what they can do. We have some really good vet- eran leadership in Michael Johnson and Nathan Haskins on the men’s side. It’ll be interest- ing to see what Nabil Hamid can do in his first collegiate track meets after having such a successful fall in cross country. For the women, we know we’re going to get a great effort out of Erin Sutton, Mackenzie Howe, and Britany Reilly every time. Erin is healthy again and wants to end off her career with a spark. I know that all three of them will be crucial to getting us points in the conference meets when we look to win the A-Sun title in both indoor and outdoor.”

Entering into his fifth season with the Track and Field team, Associate Head Coach Stan Sims implements the same coaching style and tactics that have made him one of the most successful cross country head coaches in the South. Mainly overseeing the distance runners in 5000 meter, 10000 meter and Steeplechase events, coach Sims is able to consistently work with the same runners year-round, foster- ing a culture of trust and accountability that many programs envy and few are able to match.

A graduate of the University of Florida, the respected mathematics professor has played a central part in the team’s evolution. Us- ing his experience in cross country, His experienced runners have made a significant impact on the team’s success in its short history. Preaching endurance and smart strategies to his runners, Sims has created one of the cornerstones of a program that has always to produced results since its inception. Their abilities in the past seasons have proven to be invaluable in the success of the program.

Before there was a Track & Field team at Kennesaw State Sims would often take his Cross Country team to the open invitationals as a “spring training exercise”. Competing in only distance events the Owls would routinely outperform the competition, and they became well-known in track circles for their dominance in the 5k and 10k events wherever they competed. In just four years at the Division I level, Sims is responsible for 22 All-Atlantic Sun selections under his tuelage, achieving the challenging task of turning top cross country runners into excellent distance runners on a flat track.

When not coaching Sims is professor of mathematics Kennesaw State University. He and his wife Marlene make their home in Ken- nesaw. Jason Carruthers Throws Coach-2nd Season Indiana State University

Throws Outlook: “This year’s throws squad has the potential to be the most dominant group of throwers that KSU has ever seen. We’re looking forward to being a big part of KSU Track & Field’s winning formula.”

Jason Carruthers is back for his second season as an Assistant Track and Field Coach at Kennesaw State University. During their first year under Carruther’s tutelage, Owls throwers set new school records in the women’s and men’s weight throw, women’s and men’s indoor shot put, women’s outdoor shot put, women’s discus throw, women’s hammer throw. Three of his athletes won A-Sun Championships, with 11 earning All-Atlantic Sun honors.

Carruthers is a graduate of Marietta High School in Georgia. He attended college at Indiana State University, where he graduated with a degree in Political Science with an emphasis in Legal Studies.

While at Indiana State, Carruthers competed on the Track and Field team for five years, serving as team captain for three of those years. In addition, he was a school record holder in the weight throw, with a toss of 69’7.5”, and was the team MVP for the `03-`04 season, as well as an NCAA Auto- matic qualifier in the 35 lb. weight throw.

Carruthers was also a winner of the Hillman Award, the most prestigious Athletic honor that Indiana State awards, given annually to one male and one female student-athlete that best represents athleticism, scholastic achievement, and ethical behavior.

Multiple times Carruthers was named a Verizon Scholar Athlete, an Academic All-American, All-Conference for the Missouri Valley Conference, MVP Champion in the 35 lb. weight and hammer, and a member of the NCAA All-Mid East Region team. Carruthers is currently pursing a Master’s Degree in Public Administration at Kennesaw State. Mike Goss Jumps Coach-5th Season Montevallo University Jumps Outlook: “Jerome McKinzie and Jakia Ragland both have excellent opportunities to win A-Sun championships and set conference records in the men and women’s high jump. We are setting our sights high, working for NCAA qualifying for both of them. We anticipate more great performances from Jill Arthur and Suzzette Van-Lare in triple jump and long jump, they should break some school records. Lashanna Barchue is joining the women’s team in the long jump. Tyler Riberdy, a sophomore transfer, and freshman, Chris Moukeka, will provide our men’s team support in the long jump and triple jump. Tyler and Chris each work very hard and diligently study their events. Our freshmen, Justin Patterson, Will Blythe and Cameron Zeman, bring us better opportunities for high team scores when we reach our conference meets. Our returning athletes are coming off personal best performances from the 09’ season. Most of our (veteran) crew blends academic, athletics and jobs with his/her campus life. I respect the work ethic and goals of our squad. This should be a banner year for our team.” Coach Goss begins his 5th year as a track and field assistant coach, overseeing all facets of the jump events. He graduated from the University of Montevallo and received a M.Ed. in Health and Physical Education from Georgia State University. Goss retired from the Cobb County Public School System, teaching health and physical education for 32 years. Coach Goss has worked with youth, scholastic and collegiate track and field. He is a Level II USA Track & Field (USATF) certified coach, has a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialists certification and a Club Level USA Weightlifting credential. Goss recently began work as the High Performance Chair for USATF – Georgia. Coach Goss lives in Marietta; he has a daughter, Stacy residing in Atlanta and son, Hamilton in Richmond, Virginia. Jerel Langley Pole Vault/Javelin/Multis Coach-2nd Season Gardner-Webb University Coach Langley’s Take: “Javelin should be a strong point for our women's team come outdoor season. We’re loaded with young throwers and beginners who have a lot of potential to be toward the top of the conference. Our men will return Blake Lenane who should improve in his second year of throwing ever and we are excited about the addition of Adam Reed as a potential All-Conference performer. “

“We finally have a true vault program here at KSU. With Kacey Hightower returning, we look to score major points in this event on the conference level. With Michelle Quimby, Teresa Smith and Hightower, I feel we have three of the top vaulters in the conference. With the men, Adam Reed, Jake Bridges, and Aaron Chamblee should all come in and be contributors right away. “

“This year we will have true Decathletes/Heptathletes. Naomi Mack and transfer Christie Leverette have the poten- tial to be major forces in the Atlantic Sun. Our men's decathletes will be lead by Kegan Thurman and Brain Graham. Brian was an outstanding hurdler last season and he has potential to be a great decathlete by the end of his career. Kegan Thurman was a do-it-all man in high school for North Forsyth. He will be the same here at KSU. “ Jerel Langley returns for his second season as the Javelin, Pole Vault and Multis Coach at Kennesaw State University, and has also taken on the role of Recruiting Coordinator. In his first season on the Owls staff, Langley guided two javelin throwers to an Atlantic Sun championship, while six of his student-athletes were named to All-Atlantic Sun Conference teams. Many of those under his tutelage also rewrote the school record book, setting new programs records in women’s pole vault, men’s heptathlon, and men’s and women’s javelin. He also helped Jessica Irizarry reach a regional qualifying mark in the last year of the program’s Division I re-classification. Originally from Cumming, Ga., Langley attended Roswell High School before ultimately graduating from North Forsyth. He attended Gardner-Webb University in North Carolina, where he graduated with a degree in Sports Management, and competed on the Track and Field team. Although he began his career as a Decathlete, he switched his focus to Javelin during his Junior year. While at Gardner-Webb, Langley was a two-time East Regional qualifier and finalist in the javelin, named to the 2008 All-East Region team, was a three time Atlantic Sun Conference Champion, and a 2008 Academic All-American. In addition to being a certified Level I Track and Field Coach, Langley comes from a family of coaches, with his brother Josh coaching at Clemson, while his father is a high school coach in Georgia. Langley currently resides in Kennesaw, Ga., where he is currently enrolled in the Applied Exercise and Health Science Masters program at Kennesaw State. Devin West Sprints/Hurdles Coach-3rd Season Kennesaw State University Sprints/Hurdles Outlook: “Our sprinters and hurdlers should be contributing a large portion of our scoring in the conference meets this year. On both sides, we will need big performances out of our freshmen since we are a young squad. On the women’s side, Naquia Williams and Cynthia Davis have already shown us that they are going to be able to make a huge impact at the collegiate level right away. The same can be said for some of our freshmen on the men’s side in Tremaine Grant, Ethan Kasson and Travis Benton. Jeremy Easley should provide some veteran leadership for us, as well.”

Devin West begins his third season as the Sprints and Hurdles Coach at Kennesaw State. Working with the track team Coach West is determined to make his roster of talented runners into the best squad of sprinters that KSU has ever had. During his first two seasons on the Owls’ staff, West has coached 44 sprinters and hurdlers who have garnered All-Atlantic Sun Championship recognition. Two of his athletes have achieved qualifying marks for NCAA Regional Competition. In addition, 59 of his runners have set Kennesaw State records under his tutelage. Originally from Berkeley, California, West played football and ran track at Saint Mary’s College High School. He was a two-time All-County and All-Region sprinter, competing in the 100m, 200m and 400m events. He was also a three-time California State Track & Field Championship participant. After high school, West attended Saint Mary’s College, before transferring to in Atlanta, where he was a member of the track & field and football teams. Following his time at Morehouse, he began his coaching career at nearby Norcross High School as an assistant Track & Field and football coach. In 2006, West coached the Region 7-5A Boy's Track and Field Champions. He has personally coached two 100m State Fi- nalists, two 4x100m Relay State Finalists, one 4x400m Relay State Finalist, one Triple Jump State finalist, one Long Jump State Finalist and 13 State Qualifiers. A USATF Level 1 Certified Coach, West currently makes his home in Kennesaw, Ga., and is currently studying Sport Management KSU. Paul Wakeman Volunteer Assistant-1st Season Michigan State University Paul Wakeman joins the Owls’ staff for the first time this fall and brings with him exten- sive experience as a track and cross country coach on both the high school and collegiate levels. He also spent 15 years as a high school track and field and cross country coach in Michigan prior to moving up to the college ranks. Wakeman is an accomplished runner in his own right. He ran cross country for two years at Lansing Community College, and has competed in ten marathons, including three Boston Marathons.
