Coach Jermaine Smith is now on a second hand for championship rings, having garnered four in track and two in football over the last four years. The Saints had to hold off a stiff challenge from Region 5 -AAA rival Westminster while claiming state honors in 2018, needing gold and silver medal finishes in the final event of the day in the 1600 -meter relay to prevail by the nar- row margin of 102 to 96. Seniors DeAnthony Moore and Eric Davis , freshman Oral Ashe and sophomore Terrence Lewin teamed up to capture the first place prize in the 1600 -meter relay, crossing the line in a sizzling time of 3:18.92. The Saints also made it a clean sweep in the relay events while breezing to victory in the 400 in 42.13, as seniors Israel Spivey and Kortney Cox and junior Demetri Cooper joined forces with Lewin for that victorious outing. While the 28 points in the relay events proved crucial in the end, several Saints also turned in outstanding efforts in the individual events to help pave the way to the state team crown. Spivey shined brightest in that category in his final track meet on the high school level, blistering the field for a pair of sprint triumphs in the 100 (10.61) and 200 (21.70). Fellow senior Cox picked up 14 points as the lone Saint to medal in three sports, snaring fourth place in both the 100 (10.94) and 200 (21.91) along with a strong showing of fifth in the triple jump (45 -5-1/2). Junior two -sport standout Jadon Haselwood continued to show why he ranks among the top hurdlers in Cedar Grove history, racing to the finish in first in the 110 -meter high hurdles in 14.38 and third in the 300 -meter intermediate hurdles in 39.90. Senior Keshun Byrd accounted for the fourth individual Saint gold medal, besting the field in the triple jump with an impressive best leap of 47 -4-1/2. Cooper captured a pair of individual medals to go along with his 400 relay gold, placing fifth in the 300 -meter intermediate hurdles in 40.26 and sixth in the 110 -meter intermediate hurdles in 15.26. Davis and Lewin rounded out the list of individual medalists, soaring to the respective finishes of fifth (49.87) and sixth (50.09) in the 400. The 102 total points Cedar Grove accumulated in the state team triumph easily bested the previous Saint winning state point total standard of 74 set in 2016. Southwest DeKalb senior Nicholas Edwards also turned in a memorable effort on the individual level at state, sweeping to a gold medal in the discus (175 -3) and silver in the shot put (54 -11) in helping the Panthers to a share of ninth place in the final AAAAA team standings. While Cedar Grove took center stage among local entrants at the state meet, Southwest DeKalb proved to once again be the cream of the local crop in county competition. Coach Charles Milam ’s Panthers rumbled to 90 points in easily out -distancing Stephenson (69), Martin Luther King Jr. (61.5), Arabia Mountain (54.5) and Miller Grove (53) among the remainder of the top five at the annual county meet showdown. Edwards swept to dominating triumphs in the shot put (51 -1-1/2) and discus (155 -3) to lead the way, while sen- ior Marcellus Boykin also registered a pair of golds in the 100 (10.73) and 200 (21.54). The Panthers also shined in the relay events, placing first and seventh in the 400 and second and sixth in the 1600 for 23 additional points. Boykin teamed with junior Trentavious Wiley , senior Justin Tomlin and sophomore Devin Brewington to secure the 400 -meter relay gold in 41.79. Tomlin also reached the medal stand twice on the individual level, taking fifth in the 400 (51.06) and eighth in the 200 (23.08). Senior Jeffery Hines won silver in the discus (133 -8), while senior Barry Williams and junior Jabez Long added to the Panther cause while placing third (41.37) and fourth (41.79) respectively in the 300 -meter intermediate hurdles. Dunwoody sophomore Max Mowrer matched Edwards and Boykin as double gold individual medalists at coun- ty, walking away with victorious efforts in the 1600 (4:33.56) and 3200 (9:55.74) events. Other individual county champions included Stephenson senior Jordan Sessom in the 400 (49.35), Tucker soph- omore Mohammed Koko in the 800 (1:58.94), Stephenson senior Justin Birdsong in the 110 -meter high hurdles (14.78) and Miller Grove sophomore Walik Robinson in the 300 -meter intermediate hurdles (40.47). 3 2018 GIRLS SEASON IN REVIEW Miller Grove ran away from the field on the way to repeating as team champion at the 2018 DeKalb County Track & Field Championships. Coach Eric Keddo ’s Lady Wolverines tallied an impressive total of 123 points in easily out -distancing second place Martin Luther King Jr. (85) by 38 points. The 123 points ranks sixth all -time in the 41 -year history of the girls county meet competition, trailing only Ste- phenson in 1999 (163), Columbia in 1996 (147), Southwest DeKalb in 2008 (144), Stephenson in 2002 (129.5) and Southwest DeKalb in 2007 (125). Several individuals contributed to the victorious efforts, led by the double gold medal showing of junior Emoni Coleman in the 800 (2:15.00) and 1600 (5:17.35). Senior Zariah Kitchens in the 400 (57.26), junior De’Asia Keller in the triple jump (33 -9) and junior Marguerite McGill in the shot put (34 -0) also walked away with individual first place crowns. Miller Grove also registered 21 points in the two relay events, paced by the gold medal showing of freshman Angelica Frederick, Kitchens, Coleman and junior Chance Barnes in the 1600 (3:49.91). Junior Tacari Demery chipped in 16 points on the individual level to the Miller Grove cause, flying to silver medal finishes in the 100 (12.08) and 200 (24.86). Sophomore Kayla Williams , meanwhile, scored points in three separate individual events, securing fifth in the 300 -meter low hurdles (47.98), sixth in the high jump (4 -10) and seventh in the triple jump (31 -6-1/2). Martin Luther King Jr. accumulated four total gold medals on the way to finishing second in the final overall team standings. Junior Kayla Hunt led the way with a pair of golds in the 100 (11.95) and 200 (24.61), while senior Ayonna Dennis took first in the 300 -meter hurdles (45.13) and also placed fourth in the high jump (5 -0) and seventh in the 100 (12.47).
