An important portion of this coast, including the Isle of Wight and the Isle of Purbeck, has been well described by Mr. Webster*, and subsequently illustrated by Dr. Fittonf. In the Second Series of the Geological Transactions J, Mr. De la Beche has published sections of the coast from Bridport Harbour to Sidmouth; and in the same volume Dr. Buckland has given drawings of the cliffs from Sidmouth to Beer Head, and from Lyme Regis to the Isle of Portland §. The geological history of the neighbourhood of Weymouth has been partially illustrated by Prof. Sedgwick in the Annals of Philosophy ||; and it will be the object of this paper to supply its full details, illustrated by a map and sections; beginning our observations at the point where Mr. Webster's sections end, viz., at the Pro­ montory of White Nore, about eight miles E.N.E. of the town of Weymouth, and continuing them to Weymouth and Portland, and thence westward along the Chesil Bank to the cliffs west of Lyme Regis.

The District Council is required by Section 71 of the Town and Country Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990 to formulate and publish proposals for the preservation and enhancement of Conservation Areas. This can be achieved through Conservation Area Appraisals. West Dorset has 79 Conservation Areas and the Council has agreed on a programme of character appraisals. Puncknowle, Burton Bradstock, Litton Cheney, Winterbourne Abbas and Shipton Gorge Conservation Areas form part of this appraisal work, grouped together because of their geographical proximity.

Price 25p The Council gratefully acknowledges the help of Mrs L. Aldridge with the typing of this document Part 1 - FACTUAL BACKGROUND THE PHYSICAL CHARACTER OF THE PARISH 1. The parish, which is smallish by West Dorset standards, is a rough east-west rectangle in the north west corner of the Bride Valley. It extends from Innsacre on the west, east to include Shipton Hill and St Luke’s Cottage, south to Lower Sturthill and Hammiton Hill, west to St Catherine’s Cross and Bennett’s Hill Farm, and then North via Bonscombe to Innsacre again. The village lies two miles east of Bridport, about a mile south of the A35 road. It is 14 miles from Dorchester and two miles from the sea at Burton Bradstock. 2. The relief and structure of the Parish is varied. Shipton Hill (588ft.) is a landmark for miles around. It is a steep sided mass of Upper Greensand chert, isolated by landslips which have left it surrounded on all sides by an irregular tumbled surface of Fuller’s Earth clay. Hammiton Hill is similar but at a lower leve. (394 ft.) West of the slipped area, roughly west of Loder’s Lane, the northern hillier part, Cobbett Hill, Barr Hill consists of low hills of clay, rising up to over 300 ft.
