However, there are major variations among countries. Papua New Guinea is one of the countries with the lowest number of female representatives in parliament. Two questions are asked in regard to the representation of women. First, why is it difficult for women to be elected in Papua New Guinea? And second, how do we explain where women were able to challenge others to be elected? Formal institution such as the electoral system is just one way to discuss gender equality. There are other areas of gender inequality that interact with the formal system relating to social, cultural, and economic factors. An analysis of these factors shows that even improving formal institutions to increase the number of women in political participation, gender inequality is still a challenge within and outside the legislative office. -

One strong concept — a basic idea — underlies the history of the Federation of South African Women: unity. Fedsaw, which came about as a result of the development of women’s struggles waged in earlier decades, began its existance in 1954. It was founded on the principle of a national women’s organisation that would be open to women of all races, and of any political, religious or other faith. No easy task! In the first place, the very geography of South Africa con stituted a huge hurdle. The population lived in the four different provinces, each one with its own characteristics, where the difficulties of meeting and of communication were vastly compounded by distance and aggravated, par ticularly for the women, by poverty, the lack of money for such luxuries as travel. Then there was the ever-present class/colour divide, a great river that separated women of different racial groups, and that the women were seeking somehow to bridge. -

Lessons from South Africa Lisa Vetten Women comprise half the population and so ought to make up half of all structures responsible for taking decisions on behalf of societies. That sounds like a logical principle of justice. When women (or any other social group) are left out, this not only suggests discrimination, but also potentially delegitimises decisions because the particular preferences and circumstances of those excluded have not been considered. Ergo, a greater number of women in decision-making processes should result in better policy outcomes more reflective of women’s concerns. But is it as easy as this? The plea for political representation of women has effective participation and equal opportunities for exercised increasing influence over the global gender leadership at all levels of decision-making in political, equality and women’s empowerment agenda. (Photo by Gallo Images / The Times / Thuli Dlamini) The IEC announced that a record 48 political parties have successfully registered to contest the 2019 general elections. Most have been formed recently, suggesting that many see an opportunity to capitalise on voter uncertainty after the Zuma years. Noteworthy, too, is the number of religious parties — with churches hoping to turn congregant numbers into political power. In the first of a two-part series, we take a brief look at the parties appearing on the ballot sheet in May. African Christian Democratic Party Launched in 1993, one of the ACDP’s unique claims to fame is that it was the only party to reject the South African Constitution — on the basis that it enshrined the right to abortion. Supports a return to “biblical principles”, including the imposition of the death penalty. Led by Dr Kenneth Meshoe, the ACDP received just over 104,000 votes nationally in the 2014 elections, giving it three seats in the National Assembly. African Congress of Democrats No information is available. Confusingly, there is a Namibian opposition party of the same name; and the South African Congress of Democrats was an anti-apartheid organisation run by radical white lefties. African Content Movement The ACM was launched in December 2018 by former SABC chief operations officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng. As per the party’s name, which refers to Motsoeneng’s policy of promoting local content at the SABC, the party will have a special focus on protecting creative artists.
