But today, after his death, I believe that can no longer be said. In the light, in fact, of his numerous writings and speeches and of his actions, the figure of Paul VI is clear of any ambiguity. Even if corroborating it is not so easy or simple, he having been a very complex figure, both when speaking of his preferences, by way of suggestions and insinuations, and for his abrupt leaps from idea to idea, and when opting for Tradition, but then presently for novelty, and all in language often very inaccurate. It will suffice to read, for example, his Addresses of the General Audiences, to see a Paul VI prey of an irreducible duality of thought, a permanent conflict between his thought and that of the Church, which he was nonetheless to represent. Since his time at Milan, not a few called him already “ ‘the man of the utopias,’ an Archbishop in pursuit of illusions, generous dreams, yes, yet unreal!”… Which brings to mind what Pius X said of the Chiefs of the Sillon1: “… The exaltation of their sentiments, the blind goodness of their hearts, their philosophical mysticisms, mixed … with Illuminism, have carried them toward another Gospel, in which they thought they saw the true Gospel of our Savior…”2. -

The Rosary Makers event was hosted by the Santa Teresita Auxiliary. Over 250 people attended this day Cafeteria filled with reverent worship, peace, and joy. After Mass, the procession began, led 626-408-7802 by the Carmelite Sisters and children strewing rose petals, followed by Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament held by Fr. Patrick and surrounded by altar servers carrying Sunday, June 16, 2013 candles. Residents, family, and friends processed behind the Blessed Sacrament. 10:00 Mass & Picnic to follow Two outdoor shrines were set up where Our Lord was placed and adored, while Father’s Day Celebration Father incensed the altar, prayed the benediction prayers and blessed the people St. Joseph Chapel & with Our Lord. The day ended with an outdoor picnic filled with music and joy. Santa Teresita Grounds We were united with the entire Church in this beautiful celebration. Recall the 626-408-7802 words of our Holy Father, Pope Francis during his June 2nd Angelus address, “…Jesus knows our problems, he knows our weaknesses, he knows our needs. The Theology of the Devotion to the Sacred Heart
THE THEOLOGY OF THE DEVOTION TO THE SACRED HEART Our reigning Holy Father, Pope Pius XII, will be remembered for his remarkable series of encyclicals and allocutions which cover a wide range of subjects of dogmatic, moral, liturgical and spiritual interest. Indeed as one writer has very aptly remarked, the utter- ances of Pius XII "come near to constituting a summa of Christian teaching."1 In this paper I would like to consider some of the more important theological implications of the Haurietis Aquas2 in which the Holy Father outlines the objectives and foundations of the Catholic devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Although immediately occasioned by the centenary of the exten- sion of the Feast of the Sacred Heart to the Universal Church, Haurietis Aquas has a more fundamental purpose. Despite the fact that the Church "has always held the devotion to the Sacred Heart in such high regard and continued to esteem it so greatly that she strives to have the devotion flourish throughout the world,"3 the Pope also notes that the devotion has not been universally accepted, and cites several current objections to it (e.g., it is not suited to the more pressing needs of our times; it is a form of piety springing from emotions and not from reasoned convictions; it emphasizes the passive rather than the active virtues).4 Although the Holy Father seems to indicate that his purpose in the encyclical is to refute these objections, his subsequent development strikes at difficulties of a more thoroughly theological nature. The Immaculate Heart of Mary in the Theology of Reparation Arthur Burton Calkins I. Introduction One can never speak of the Immaculate Heart of Mary without direct reference to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus because these two persons, one divine and one human, of whom their Two Hearts are symbols, were from all eternity united in the mind of God. Blessed Pope Pius IX declared this solemnly in the Bull Ineffabilis Deus in which he proclaimed the dogma of the Immaculate Conception when he stated that God by one and the same decree, had established the origin of Mary and the Incarnation of Divine Wisdom [ad illius Virginis primordia transferre, quæ uno eodemque decreto cum divinæ Sapientiæ incarnatione fuerant præstituta.]1 Precisely because these two persons are not equal we cannot speak of them in exactly the same way and yet they are not entirely different. Thus, we must speak of them in terms of the principal of analogy or “likeness in difference” and then the analogy between the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. I trust that this necessary preliminary treatment will prove to be of value in the end. II. The Principal of Analogy Analogy, in the classical sense in which this term is used by St. Thomas Aquinas and his followers, denotes “a kind of predication midway between univocation and equivocation.” 2 Here is the Angelic Doctor’s own description of what he meant by analogous predication: It is evident that terms which are used in this way [i.e. analogically] are intermediate between univocal and equivocal terms. -

Marian Coredemption as an Impetus to Marian Devotion Msgr. Arthur Burton Calkins, S.T.D. I. Introduction Marialis Cultus, the Apostolic Exhortation of the Venerable Pope Paul VI, was addressed to the Catholic Church at a crucial moment in the midst of postconciliar confusion. The optimism of Gaudium et Spes and the other conciliar documents was met head on by the turbulence of the sixties and seventies. Within ten years of the closing of the Second Vatican Council on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception in 1965 enormous societal changes were taking place, which are perhaps not even now fully assessed by the social sciences. In the course of that period, despite the fresh synthesis of Marian doctrine provided by chapter eight of Lumen Gentium, Marian devotion, which had perhaps reached its zenith in the era of the Venerable Pope Pius XII (1939-1958), seemed to have reached its nadir. The problem facing Paul VI in that debilitating milieu was how to revive Marian devotion and how to do so from the perspective of the conciliar teaching on the Blessed Virgin Mary. While the conciliar teaching had benefited from developments that had taken place in biblical, patristic, liturgical and ecclesiological studies since the First Vatican Council, it had still to convey the Church’s magisterial teaching on Our Lady, which had been handed on and enriched under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. On the one hand, the papal magisterium from the time of Blessed Pius IX onwards had continued developing the teaching about Mary’s active collaboration in the work of the redemption and Pius XI had publicly used the term “Coredemptrix” to describe this role.1 On the other hand there was a distinctive concern on the part of many to promote in the council documents language that could be more easily understood by our separated brethren. -
The Theology of the Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus
THE THEOLOGY OF THE DEVOTION TO THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS Robert R. O'Connell, O.P. "The Heart of Jesus is the Heart of a divine Person, that is, of the Incarnate Word, and ... by it all the love with which He loved, and even now continues to love us is represented and, so to speak, placed before our very eyes."l ~HESE WORDS of the late Pontiff, Pius XII, in the en v cyclical letter "Haurietis Aquas" of May 15, 1956, lay bare the theological foundation of the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It is a devotion to love, the love which led Christ to the cross of Calvary, and beyond to the sanctification of the members of His Mystical Body. The mystery of the cross is the mystery of the redemptive Incarnation, and the Incarnation is par excellence the mystery of love: devotion to the Sacred Heart is devotion to that human and divine love which consumed the Heart of our divine Redeemer. Thus, the redemptive activity of the God-man in His passion and death is the key to the under standing of the Sacred Heart. Removed from the context of our redemption, this devotion degenerates into an emotional and sen timental piety altogether alien to Dominican Spirituality. It will be our purpose to discuss in summary fashion, the theological nexus between the doctrine of the Incarnation and the Sacred Heart as taught in the "Haurietis Aquas," with special reference to St. Thomas' tract on the Incarnation. HEART OF JESUS, SYMBOL OF INFINITE LOVE! Of fundamental importance in our discussion is the determi nation of the precise object of devotion to the Sacred Heart.
