- 3 - 16 NCAA Appearances • #SwordsUp • game notes 2019 @Privateers_BSB SCOUTING THE COMPETITION northwestern state - The Demons are also riding a wave of momentum into the weekend set after defeating nationally ranked LSU 3-1 on Tuesday night. Cullen McDonald handcuffed the Tigers over 7.2 innings, allowing just five hits and one run. Tyler Pigott closed the game for the save. Jeffrey Elkins’ two-run put the Demons ahead for good in the sixth inning. It was the 12th win by the Demons in 71 career games vs. LSU.

- Northwestern State is in the same spot as New Orleans after one conference weekend. The Demons took the long trip to Abilene Christian and came away with one win, a 24-11 thrashing in the second game of the series. Northwestern State scored two runs combined in the other two games.

- Caleb Ricca has been the focal point in the Demons’ offense. Ricca, who jumped his batting average 51 points from his freshman to sophomore year, has seen another huge uptick this season. Ricca is hitting .370 with two homers and 14 RBI. He has collected a hit in 11 of 14 Demon contests this season.

- Head coach Bobby Barbier led the Demons’ turnaround to Southland champions last year and won Conference Coach of the Year honors. Barbier was twice an assistant at Northwestern State before taking the head coaching job in 2017. Barbier also was an as- sistant coach at Alabama. In that span, 12 student-athletes were drafted.

- Jerry Maddox is one of many who return off last season’s team that ran to the NCAA Regional in Corvallis. Maddox took home a slew of awards in his first season with the Demons. He was Southland and LSWA Newcomer of the Year, First Team All-Conference and All-State and Second Team All-Academic. This year, Maddox has been tagged for 19 runs (15 earned) in 17.1 innings.

- Jose Vasquez was the man who sealed the deal for Northwestern State in the championship game. He pitched the last four in- nings of the title game for the Demons. In his first year with Northwestern State, Vasquez pitched to a 2.90 ERA and earned six wins along with four saves.

- Two players were drafted off last year’s championship team. David Fry went in the seventh round to the Milwaukee Brewers. Kwan Adkins was a day three selection, going in the 30th round to the San Francisco Giants. Fry hit .315 in 61 games with 12 hom- ers and 57 RBI for Helena. Adkins stole six bases in 35 games last season.

- Among baseball alums, Lee Smith tops the charts. The Castor, Louisiana native was recently inducted into the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee. Smith pitched for 18 seasons in the big leagues and amassed 478 saves. Smith was a seven-time all-star and was the runner up to Tom Glavine in the voting for the 1991 Cy Young Award.

coach’s corner

Northwestern State

“They’ve got a lot of guys back with experience and they don’t have great offensive numbers this year but they’re a team especially in their park like they showed against LSU that you can’t take lightly.”

“They can hit but the pitching has been their bread and butter. We’re going to have our hands full so we’ll have to create some offense to separate if we want to get to those guys.”

“It’s been a tough road swing and we’ve done a decent job but we’ve got to get ahead in conference play. We have to go up there and at least take two.”

game notes • #SwordsUp • 16 NCAA Appearances - 10 - 2019 @Privateers_BSB HEAD COACH BLAKE DEAN

Blake Dean was named the University of New Orleans’ seventh head coach in its 48 year history during the summer of 2015 following a brief stint as the school’s interim head coach.

After taking over for Ron Maestri who retired following his second stint as Privateers head coach, Dean has continued the re- build. In 2018, New Orleans reached their first conference championship game in 10 years and they did it as the lowest seed (8) in the Southland Tournament.

Three Privateers were named to the All-Tournament Team: Beau Bratton, Orynn Veillon, and Kyle Arjona. In his first three seasons, New Orleans has seen 11 players named to the All-Southland postseason team. Seven more have earned honorable mention.

Last year was also a breakout season for the pitching staff. The 580 strikeouts was the most in a single season in program his- tory, smashing the previous record of 511 (set in 2002).

In 2017, the Privateers won 30 games and qualified for the Southland Tournament for the second consecutive season. New Orleans was one of the last four teams remaining before being eliminated by eventual champion, Sam Houston State.

In 2016, the Privateers’ 31-26 record marked the first winning record for the baseball program since 2008 and qualified for the Southland Conference for the first time since joining the league prior to the 2013-14 academic year. In his first season at the helm, UNO saw a 17-game turnaround, the eighth-best in Division I in 2016, while the team was one of 17 to increase their winning percentage by .200, boasting the fourth-highest improvement.

The Privateers set eight-year highs in batting average (.300), total hits (600), doubles (77), on base percentage (.368) and field- ing percentage (.966) saves (15), and strikeouts (400) in that span.

Nationally, UNO finished eighth in triples per game with a 0.44 average and 10th in total triples with 25 while Dakota Dean cracked the top 25 individually with six on the season, the 22nd-most. UNO’s resurrected offense led the Southland Confer- ence in triples, while finishing second in in hits, batting average, third in RBI, fewest batters struck out (328) and fourth in slugging percentage (.416).

During his time on the Lakefront, Dean was instrumental in Capielano and Randolph claiming Freshman All-America status in 2014 while helping several Privateer hitters improve their production at the plate.

Highlights on the diamond, however, are nothing new for Dean as the native of Crestview, Florida, has experienced success at every stop of his baseball career to date.

As a prepster at Crestview High, Dean was a four-year all-state honoree and was a member of the USA Baseball Youth Na- tional Team. Following his senior season, he claimed Louisville Slugger All-America recognition and was named to Baseball America’s Top 300 High School Players of 2006.

From there, he packed his bags for Baton Rouge where he helped LSU post a combined 175 wins, three trips to the NCAA Su- per Regionals and a pair of berths in the College World Series – including a National Championship in 2009. As they had done during his high school career, honors came in by the handful for Dean in college. As a rookie, he was named Freshman All-SEC, Louisiana Freshman of the Year and Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American.

One year later, Dean was tabbed first-team All-American by Baseball America, second-team All-South Region by the American Baseball Coaches Assocation and Louisiana Hitter of the Year by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association. He also claimed SEC Tournament MVP and Baton Rouge Regional Most Outstanding Player recognition during the Tigers’ march to Omaha.

Dean claimed first-team all-state honors in each of his final three collegiate seasons, was tabbed first-team All-SEC as a junior and was a candidate for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award in 2010. Along the way, he finished second in school history in hits (332), RBI (260) and total bases (575), fourth in home runs (56) and fifth in runs scored (223).

Dean completed his bachelor’s degree in sports administration from LSU in 2013.
