- 3 - 16 NCAA Appearances • #SwordsUp • game notes 2019 @Privateers_BSB SCOUTING THE COMPETITION jackson state - The Tigers began 2019 with eight of their first 13 games at home. The first two weekends were hosted at Braddy Field when Jack- son State welcomed Boston College and Milwaukee. The Tigers also played a home series against Stillman College. In those games, Jackson State is 3-5.

- Three Tigers made the Preseason All-SWAC Team: Kevin Perez, who won 11 games last year as mostly a starter was named to the Second Team. Wesley Reyes and Dezmond Chumley are the leading returners off a very potent offense in 2018 and were both named to the First Team. Reyes hit .304 and scored 36 runs last season. Chumley hit .320 and had a .433 on-base percentage in 50 games (47 starts).

- Jackson State lost several players off an offense that led the SWAC in batting average at .304. The Tigers also led the SWAC in doubles (109), home runs (40) and slugging percentage (.449). The Tigers also had 100 stolen bases, one of two teams in the con- ference to reach that mark. Texas Southern was the other at 115.

- Nikelle Galatas has been used in multiple facets already for the Tigers. The sophomore pitcher has started four games and has the team’s lone save of the year. Galatas leads the team in innings pitched (23.1) and is second on the squad in strikeouts with 17.

- Coach Omar Johnson has been a staple in Jackson, Mississippi. He has been head coach of the Tigers since 2007 and has guided the team to at least 30 wins in all but one season. Johnson has compiled 412 victories heading into this week. He has also coached the Tigers to two NCAA tournament appearances (2013, 2014). In 2014, the Tigers began the NCAA Regional with a bang by upset- ting top ranked Louisiana 1-0 on the first day of competition.

- The most recent draft pick from Jackson State was Bryce Brown (2017) who was picked in the 15th round by Tampa Bay. The highest ever draft pick to come from Jackson State was Dave Clark. A former first round pick, Clark suited up in 905 Major League games with six different teams.

- Last year, the Tigers beat the Privateers in both meetings. It marked the first time ever Jackson State has secured consecutive victories over New Orleans. The Tigers have won 13 out of the 79 meetings between the two sides.

- Heading into the season, Jackson State was selected to finish second in the Eastern Division of the SWAC. The Tigers received six first place votes. The division favorite heading into 2019 is Alabama State who received nine first place votes. Texas Southern was selected as the favorite in the Western Division after winning the division and securing the postseason tournament championship last year.

coach’s corner

Jackson State

“Obviously Coach Johnson is doing a great job. They’ve had some really talented players over the years. They handled us really well last year and they’re certainly a team we can’t take lightly.”

“I’m sure Jackson State is going to put pressure on us. We’ll have to manage the run game and do a bet- ter job of holding runners. We also have to find a way to put some runs up and give our pitching staff a breather.”

“Hopefully for Bailey, his last outing shows that he just has to throw strikes and locate his fastball and he should be fine. We’ll give him an inning and hope he’s ready to go this weekend at some point.”

- 9 - 16 NCAA Appearances • #SwordsUp • game notes 2019 @Privateers_BSB HEAD COACH BLAKE DEAN

Blake Dean was named the University of New Orleans’ seventh head coach in its 48 year history during the summer of 2015 following a brief stint as the school’s interim head coach.

After taking over for Ron Maestri who retired following his second stint as Privateers head coach, Dean has continued the re- build. In 2018, New Orleans reached their first conference championship game in 10 years and they did it as the lowest seed (8) in the Southland Tournament.

Three Privateers were named to the All-Tournament Team: Beau Bratton, Orynn Veillon, and Kyle Arjona. In his first three seasons, New Orleans has seen 11 players named to the All-Southland postseason team. Seven more have earned honorable mention.

Last year was also a breakout season for the pitching staff. The 580 strikeouts was the most in a single season in program his- tory, smashing the previous record of 511 (set in 2002).

In 2017, the Privateers won 30 games and qualified for the Southland Tournament for the second consecutive season. New Orleans was one of the last four teams remaining before being eliminated by eventual champion, Sam Houston State.

In 2016, the Privateers’ 31-26 record marked the first winning record for the baseball program since 2008 and qualified for the Southland Conference for the first time since joining the league prior to the 2013-14 academic year. In his first season at the helm, UNO saw a 17-game turnaround, the eighth-best in Division I in 2016, while the team was one of 17 to increase their winning percentage by .200, boasting the fourth-highest improvement.

The Privateers set eight-year highs in batting average (.300), total hits (600), doubles (77), on base percentage (.368) and field- ing percentage (.966) saves (15), and strikeouts (400) in that span.

Nationally, UNO finished eighth in triples per game with a 0.44 average and 10th in total triples with 25 while Dakota Dean cracked the top 25 individually with six on the season, the 22nd-most. UNO’s resurrected offense led the Southland Confer- ence in triples, while finishing second in in hits, batting average, third in RBI, fewest batters struck out (328) and fourth in slugging percentage (.416).

During his time on the Lakefront, Dean was instrumental in Capielano and Randolph claiming Freshman All-America status in 2014 while helping several Privateer hitters improve their production at the plate.

Highlights on the diamond, however, are nothing new for Dean as the native of Crestview, Florida, has experienced success at every stop of his baseball career to date.

As a prepster at Crestview High, Dean was a four-year all-state honoree and was a member of the USA Baseball Youth Na- tional Team. Following his senior season, he claimed Louisville Slugger All-America recognition and was named to Baseball America’s Top 300 High School Players of 2006.

From there, he packed his bags for Baton Rouge where he helped LSU post a combined 175 wins, three trips to the NCAA Su- per Regionals and a pair of berths in the College World Series – including a National Championship in 2009. As they had done during his high school career, honors came in by the handful for Dean in college. As a rookie, he was named Freshman All-SEC, Louisiana Freshman of the Year and Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American.

One year later, Dean was tabbed first-team All-American by Baseball America, second-team All-South Region by the American Baseball Coaches Assocation and Louisiana Hitter of the Year by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association. He also claimed SEC Tournament MVP and Baton Rouge Regional Most Outstanding Player recognition during the Tigers’ march to Omaha.

Dean claimed first-team all-state honors in each of his final three collegiate seasons, was tabbed first-team All-SEC as a junior and was a candidate for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award in 2010. Along the way, he finished second in school history in hits (332), RBI (260) and total bases (575), fourth in home runs (56) and fifth in runs scored (223).

Dean completed his bachelor’s degree in sports administration from LSU in 2013.
