With sadness, we note the passing of local Railfan Bill Breazeale of Kensington, MD, on June 22, 2021. Bill was a long-time member of the Chesapeake Railway Association (formerly, The Chesapeake Division of the Railroad Enthusiasts). Bill was a regular attendee at monthly CRA meetings but declining health kept him away in recent years. Bill was also a long-time volunteer with the Walkersville Southern Railroad, serving as engineer and resident locksmith. Bill also was an outstanding musician and, along with several friends, provided excellent Bluegrass music for many Walkersville Southern/Chesapeake Railway Association picnics. Bill will be greatly missed. The Potomac Chapter extends its Deepest Sympathy to Bill's family and friends. Please remember them in your Thoughts and Prayers. ARE WE REALLY SAFE? Potomac Chapter Member and NRHS Director Emeritus Joe Maloney emailed us advising that even after being fully vaccinated, he had contracted COVID-19 virus. This was after receiving the Moderna vaccine in January and February. While Joe thinks the vaccine has significantly reduced the affects of the disease; The Commonwealth of Virginia had him quarantining for 10 days. His quarantine went pretty well but with some lingering selective loss of taste. The Potomac Chapter sends Joe our collective Best Wishes for Good Health! IT’S BACK!!! 2021 GAITHERSBURG RAILROADIANA SHOW. From Bob Cohen: I just received flyers for the Annual (except for last year), Gaithersburg Railroadiana Show, which is "only" 4 months away. The date is the usual: first weekend of November 2021. The general public can get in for a modest admission fee on Sunday, November 7th only but if you are a more serious player, you can get in for I think it is $40, starting Noon on Friday the 5th. I have seen just about everything imaginable that was involved with a POTOMAC RAIL NEWS JULY 2021 PAGE 3 OF 12 railroad except a full-size locomotive and think I saw photos of one saying "ask" at least one time. All sorts of transportation related goodies will be there; lanterns and parts, RR China, books, videos, timetables, magazines from just about every imaginable source: railroad, railfans, companies, and you name it. With it being 2 years since the last of this show in 2019 and of course we didn't know what we would be facing for the past 16 months or so, the demand for "stuff" is strong and with other shows coming on-line in the coming months as well, this show also promises to be a real eye-opener. In the past a number of Railroad historical societies have been in attendance and, going from memory, I can recall seeing, the N&W, Sou, B&O, C&O, ACL/SAL, Chessie, PC, Ma & Pa, and a number of others. Who knows this year? More will be forthcoming as we get a bunch closer but for now, mark your calendars, spread the word and let's all look forward to enjoying our hobby as we did before. You can contact the show folks directly at Golden Spike Enterprises, Inc. (www.gserr.com) if you desire more details. RAIL NEWS WMSR BOARD ANNOUNCES APPOINTMENT OF INTERIM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR. The Board of Directors for the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad (WMSR) unanimously voted on June 9th to appoint Wesley Heinz to the position of Interim Executive Director while Mr. John Garner, current Director, was granted a 60-day sabbatical to address health and family concerns. Mr. Heinz comes to the WMSR with extensive experience and proven leadership background, and he is the current Executive Director of the Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Co. & Museum in Portland, Maine. His experience includes historic preservation, revenue-generating events, comprehensive fundraising, and marketing. Heinz is responsible for increased daily performance, improved cost-saving measures, and has identified opportunities through strategic planning in his current position. He also has experience in providing presentations to state and local officials through a fundraising capital campaign. Heinz has used his professional relationships to assist the WMSR with equipment and right-of-way challenges and has been instrumental in providing expertise for the restoration of WMSR 1309 steam locomotive. Mike McKay, WMSR Board President and Delegate for District 1C in Allegany and Washington counties, said: “We are happy to welcome Wesley Heinz to the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad, and we look forward to his visionary project management style and his expertise with steam.” (www.wmsr.com) THE WESTERN MARYLAND SCENIC RAILROAD BOARD has announced that Wesley Heinz has been named Interim Executive Director, with the opportunity of making it permanent after a 60-day probationary period. The news came in the form of a press release from Delegate Mike McKay, the WMSR Board President. It said the vote taken on the morning of June 9th was unanimous to hire Heinz, who was in Cumberland to receive the news. “We are happy to welcome Mr. Heinz to the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad and look forward to his visionary project management and his expertise with steam,” McKay said. Current Executive Director John Garner is taking a 60-day leave for health and family reasons. However, McKay told the Times-News that Garner will not return as director but added he may take on another role with the railroad. Garner was named Executive Director of the WMSR in the spring of 2016 and replaced Michael Gresham. He has been at the helm as the railroad has been trying to restore the massive Baldwin No. 1309 steam locomotive, which was purchased in 2014. POTOMAC RAIL NEWS JULY 2021 PAGE 4 OF 12 “We firmly believe that at the end of the 60 days, Mr. Garner will be part of our organization in some fashion,” McKay said. “I just don’t know what the fashion will be. We want him to get his health straight and his family taken care of. He is the guy who took us to the 5-yard line. We expect him to be part of the team going forward, but I do know it will not be as Executive Director. Depending on how things look at the end of 60 days, we will see how things are. I’m not sure what Mr. Garner will want to do. We want to be respectful for all he has done for the WMSR, but I believe going forward, Wes Heinz will be our Executive Director.” `Heinz, originally from Memphis, Tennessee, is currently the Executive Director of the Narrow Gauge Railroad & Museum Co. in Portland, Maine, which runs steam locomotives. “What I was looking for in core qualifications, I think this gentleman has, McKay said of Heinz. “I’m looking for someone who can motivate my staff to do a yeoman’s job with limited resources and someone who is a relationship builder; we need to do a better job of that. They need to have fundraising ability and know railroad operations as well, and at the end of the day, the ability to set a vision. I think the team has done a great job with 1309. We got the ball at the 5-yard line. We need somebody with fresh legs to get this into the end zone.” McKay said he believes the scenic railroad’s ridership will increase dramatically once the No. 1309 Maryland Thunder engine is on the rails, which he hopes to see by autumn. Heinz has lived in numerous American cities, including New York, Atlanta, and Chicago.
