A review of Marcin’s transcript will show that he is an outstanding and highly motivated student, as evidenced by his classroom performance. He has consistently taken a full schedule of accelerated and Advanced Placement courses with an emphasis in math and science. As a sophomore he took AP European History and AP Calculus BC; as a junior he took AP Language and Composition, AP U.S. History, AP Physics 1, and Multivariable Calculus and Differentiated Equations; this year he is enrolled in AP Literature and Composition, AP Psychology, AP Statistics, and AP Physics C. Additionally, he completed three years of Spanish at the accelerated level, and has been a four-year member of East’s Gifted Lyceum and band programs (more about that later). Although the focus of tonight’s recognition is on extra-curricular achievement, we can’t overlook Marcin’s academic performance.     In October 2005, Google piloted the Doodle 4 Google competition to help celebrate the opening of our new Googleplex offi ce in London. Students from local London schools competed, and eleven year-old Lisa Wainaina created the winning design. Lisa’s doodle was hosted on the Google UK homepage for 24 hours, seen by millions of people – including her very proud parents, classmates, and teachers. The back cover of this Annual Report displays the ten Doodle 4 Google fi nalists’ designs. SITTING HERE TODAY, I cannot believe that a year has passed since Sergey last wrote to you. Our pace of change and growth has been remarkable. All of us at Google feel fortunate to be part of a phenomenon that continues to rapidly expand throughout the world. We work hard to use this amazing expansion and attention to do good and expand our business as best we can. We remain an unconventional company.     MAINE EAST HIGH SCHOOL Proposed Building Improvements The 89-year-old Maine East building lacks a secure front entrance. The floor plan is extremely dated and there are accessibility issues throughout the school. Reconfiguration of classrooms and labs will promote collaborative learning and leverage instructional technology. While the special education, fine arts, career and technical education, and athletics programs have evolved, the facility has not and the proposed plan addresses those needs. Plan Highlights: Proposed Floor Plans • Construct a new secure front entrance to prevent visitors from entering the high school before being cleared by personnel. • Replace outdated plumbing, electrical and mechanical systems to extend the useful life of the existing building, reducing costly Third Level emergency repairs and improve energy efficiency. • Update classrooms and labs to create flexible learning spaces that leverage instructional technology, allow for new teaching methods and promote collaboration. • Relocate the offices of the counselors, deans, psychologists and other support personnel into one area of building. This will enhance student access to these important services while also maintaining student privacy/confidentiality. Second Level • Right size and relocate the special education spaces to better meet the needs of students in these programs. • Expand and update the undersized fine arts spaces. • Create collaboration zones throughout the school for students to study individually and in small groups. Main Level • Relocate and improve the Library Media Center to increase functionality and access by all students and staff. • Add an elevator to the East section of the building to provide access to the second floor athletic areas. • Provide a first-floor, handicapped-accessible hallway connecting west wing of the school to center court, improving students’ traffic flow and access throughout.
