Ik ben ook meteen afgegaan op de begeleiders die daar iets mee wilden doen. Helaas kon ik niet terecht bij mijn top 3 begeleiders met deze onderwerpen. Maar de grote optimist die ik ben, had ik er het volste vertrouwen in dat ik nog op tijd een begeleider zou krijgen, wat na een gesprek met Erik Hitters ook is gebeurd. Helaas kreeg ik drie dagen voor mijn eerste afspraak met mijn nieuwe begeleider te horen dat het niet meer zou lukken om mij te begeleiden, omdat hij onverwachts niet meer werkzaam was op de universiteit. Na weer een gesprek met Erik Hitters, had ik er nog steeds het volste vertrouwen in dat het goed zou komen. Helaas kwam de kerstvakantie steeds dichterbij en begon ik me toch enigszins zorgen te maken. En net in de week voor de vakantie had Erik Hitters een begeleider voor me gevonden; Jacco van Sterkenburg. Vanaf dat moment ging alles heel snel en moest ik meteen met een plan van aanpak komen. Daar heb ik heel mijn kerstvakantie aan besteed en het ergste dat je als student kan gebeuren overkomt me; mijn usb gaat kapot met daarop mijn gehele plan van aanpak.

This article examines the reasons behind a Heroin policy shift that led to the introduction of mass media drug education in the mid 1980s. It focuses on two Drug education campaigns. ‘Heroin Screws You Up’ ran in England, and ‘Choose Life Not Drugs’ ran in Scotland. The campaigns Health education were different in tone, with ‘Heroin Screws You Up’ making use of fear and ‘shock horror’ tactics, whereas History of drug use ‘Choose Life Not Drugs’ attempted to deliver a more positive health message. ‘Heroin Screws You Up’ was criticised by many experts for its stigmatising approach. ‘Choose Life Not Drugs’ was more favourably received, but both campaigns ran into difficulties with the wider public. The messages of these campaigns were appro­ priated and deliberately subverted by some audiences. This historical policy analysis points towards a complex and nuanced relationship between drug education campaigns and their audiences, which raises wider questions about health education and its ‘publics’. In April 1986, the cast of teen TV soap, Grange Hill, released a song wanted to be seen to take action on drugs, leading to the introduction of titled ‘Just say no’.

    Heterotic String Compactification with a View Towards Cosmology by Jørgen Olsen Lye Thesis for the degree Master of Science (Master i fysikk) Department of Physics Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences University of Oslo May 2014 Abstract The goal is to look at what constraints there are for the internal manifold in phe- nomenologically viable Heterotic string compactification. Basic string theory, cosmology, and string compactification is sketched. I go through the require- ments imposed on the internal manifold in Heterotic string compactification when assuming vanishing 3-form flux, no warping, and maximally symmetric 4-dimensional spacetime with unbroken N = 1 supersymmetry. I review the current state of affairs in Heterotic moduli stabilisation and discuss merging cosmology and particle physics in this setup. In particular I ask what additional requirements this leads to for the internal manifold. I conclude that realistic manifolds on which to compactify in this setup are severely constrained. An extensive mathematics appendix is provided in an attempt to make the thesis more self-contained. This article concentrates on the period between 1818 and 1858, from Playfair’s birth to his appointment as Professor of Chemistry at the University of Edinburgh. His biographer (Sir Thomas Wemyss Reid) described his life as a ‘story not of adventure, but work’ and yet his record was one of energetic enterprise that had considerable impact. He was a rising star in the then fashionable world of chemistry, a favoured student of the founder of organic chemistry, Justus Liebig, and a central figure in the promotion of new ideas in agricultural science.[1] A career in science and the state saw him connected to the leading figures of both, and he played a crucial role in the conceptual and financial success of the Great Exhibition, and its legacy. His brilliance has been overshadowed by the extrovert Henry Cole, and yet Playfair was essential to the major educational reforms of their time. String theory predicts the existence of two sets of geometric invariants, from the A-model and the B-model on Calabi-Yau manifolds, each indexed by a non-negative inte- ger called genus. The A-model has been mathematically established at all genera by the Gromov-Witten theory, but little is known in mathematics for B-model beyond genus zero. We develop a mathematical theory of higher genus B-model from perturbative quantiza- tion techniques of gauge theory. The relevant gauge theory is the Kodaira-Spencer gauge theory, which is originally discovered by Bershadsky-Cecotti-Ooguri-Vafa as the closed string field theory of B-twisted topological string on Calabi-Yau three-folds. We generalize this to Calabi-Yau manifolds of arbitrary dimensions including also gravitational descen- dants, which we call BCOV theory. We give the geometric description of the perturbative quantization of BCOV theory in terms of deformation-obstruction theory. The vanishing of the relevant obstruction classes will enable us to construct the higher genus B-model. We carry out this construction on the elliptic curve and establish the corresponding higher genus B-model.
