This document has been submitted by the Animals Committee.* Background 2. At its 16th meeting (CoP16, Bangkok, 2013), the Conference of the Parties adopted the following interrelated decisions on freshwater stingrays: Directed to the Secretariat 16.130 The Secretariat shall issue a Notification requesting the range States of freshwater stingrays (Family Potamotrygonidae) to report on the conservation status and management of, and domestic and international trade in the species. Directed to the Animals Committee 16.131 The Animals Committee shall establish a working group comprising the range States of freshwater stingrays in order to evaluate and duly prioritize the species for inclusion in CITES Appendix II. 16.132 The Animals Committee shall consider all information submitted on freshwater stingrays in response to the request made under Decision 16.131 above, and shall: a) identify species of priority concern, including those species that meet the criteria for inclusion in Appendix II of the Convention; b) provide specific recommendations to the range States of freshwater stingrays; and c) submit a report at the 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties on the progress made by the working group, and its recommendations and conclusions. * The geographical designations employed in this document do not imply the expression of any opinion whatsoever on the part of the CITES Secretariat (or the United Nations Environment Programme) concerning the legal status of any country, territory, or area, or concerning the delimitation of its frontiers or boundaries. -

Introduction In the freshwater aquarium, stingrays are among the most desired of unusual pets. Although a couple species have been commercially available for some time, they remain relatively uncommon in home aquariums. They are often avoided by aquarists due to their reputation for being fragile and difficult to maintain. As with many fishes that share this reputation, it is partly undeserved. A healthy ray is a robust animal, and problems are often due to lack of a proper understanding of care requirements. In the last few years many more species have been exported from South America on a regular basis. As a result, many are just recently being captive bred for the first time. These advances will be making additional species of freshwater stingray increasingly available in the near future. In this region, the taxa have signifi cant economic (3) importance for the ornamental fi shing industry, being intensively captured, especially 93(3) the species Potamotrygon leopoldi, which is endemic to this basin. In the attempt to propose a species-specifi c DNA marker for the species from Xingu, as well as ensuring DOI a robust and reliable molecular identifi cation, the present work analysed mitochondrial 10.1590/0001-3765202120191325 gene portions Cytochrome Oxidase C – subunit I (COI) and Cytochrome B (Cytb) of fi ve species: P. leopoldi; Potamotrygon orbignyi; Potamotrygon motoro; Potamotrygon scobina and Paratrygon aiereba. We found haplotype sharing, with a total absence of reciprocal monophyly in the majority of taxa. Individuals morphologically identifi ed as a species showed mitochondrial DNA from another, suggesting the fi rst record of hybridization amongst freshwater stingrays of Xingu. -

CoP16 Prop. 47 Inclusion of Paratrygon aiereba in Appendix II Proponent: Colombia Summary: Paratrygon aiereba is a widespread freshwater stingray that occurs in the main channels of some large South American rivers in the Plurinational State of Bolivia (Bolivia), Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela (Venezuela). Little is known about the biology of this species. It is a large ray reaching up to 130 cm disc width and has low fecundity, producing two offspring every second year. It is one of 25 or so members of the family Potamotrygonidae, a family of freshwater elasmobranch fishes confined to South America. Population numbers are unknown although the species has been reported as occurring in high densities in some areas. It is harvested (particularly juveniles) in commercial and artisanal fisheries for the international ornamental fish trade, for domestic human consumption and for export as a food item. It is also believed to be affected by habitat destruction and there is some indication that it is persecuted because of the risk it poses to tourists (it has a very painful sting). Recently, it has not been observed in some areas in Venezuela and Colombia where it was previously considered abundant. Information on the magnitude of declines, however, is not available. It was assessed by IUCN in 2009 as Data Deficient. International demand for the species, both for live specimens and meat, may be increasing, in particular in Asia. It is not easily found for sale on the Internet, although specimens are advertised on aquarium sites and in specialist fora. The only species-specific trade data available for Paratrygon aiereba are for the reported export of 216 individuals between 2007 and 2011 from Colombia, mainly to Thailand, Hong Kong and Russia. -

Nunes3 Abstract The Brazilian Amazonian coast, extending from Amapá to Maranhão states, is drained by a series of small to medium sized rivers of the Amazon basin. The Pindaré- Mearim is an isolated basin formed by the junction of the Pindaré and Mearim rivers at its lower portion. Along the Pindaré and Mearim rivers there is a single reported species of freshwater stingray identified asPotamotrygon motoro. Although specimens have been deposited in research institutions, most of these specimens have been captured on the Amazon basin and its direct tributaries or along the Panará-Paraguay river basin. Hence, there is a severe lack of information on the P. motoro of the Pindaré- Mearim river basin. Reyda2 1 Departamento de Zoologia – Instituto de Biociências, Universidade de São Paulo, Cidade Universitária, São Paulo, SP, Brazil; 2 Biology Department & Biological Field Station, State University of New York, College at Oneonta, NY, USA Abstract: Neotropical freshwater stingrays (Batoidea: Potamotrygonidae) host a diversity of parasites, including some, like their hosts, that are marine-derived. Among the parasites of potamotrygonids, the cestode fauna is the most diverse, with multiple genera having been reported, including genera endemic to the freshwaters of the Neotropics and genera that have cosmopolitan distributions. Recent efforts have been made to document the diversity of cestodes of this host-parasite system and to refine the taxonomy of parasite line- ages. The present study contributes to our knowledge of Rhinebothrium Linton, 1890, a diverse cosmopolitan genus of rhinebothriidean cestode, with 37 species reported from marine batoids, one species from a freshwater stingray in Borneo and six species from potamo- trygonids. Rhinebothrium jaimei sp. n. is described from two species of potamotrygonids, Potamotrygon orbignyi (Castelnau) (type host) and Potamotrygon scobina Garman, from Bahía de Marajó of the lower Amazon region. It can be distinguished from most of its marine congeners via multiple attributes, including its possession of two, rather than one, posteriormost loculi on its bothridia and the lomeniform shape of its bothridium that is wider anteriorly.
