This document has been submitted by the Animals Committee.* Background 2. At its 16th meeting (CoP16, Bangkok, 2013), the Conference of the Parties adopted the following interrelated decisions on freshwater stingrays: Directed to the Secretariat 16.130 The Secretariat shall issue a Notification requesting the range States of freshwater stingrays (Family Potamotrygonidae) to report on the conservation status and management of, and domestic and international trade in the species. Directed to the Animals Committee 16.131 The Animals Committee shall establish a working group comprising the range States of freshwater stingrays in order to evaluate and duly prioritize the species for inclusion in CITES Appendix II. 16.132 The Animals Committee shall consider all information submitted on freshwater stingrays in response to the request made under Decision 16.131 above, and shall: a) identify species of priority concern, including those species that meet the criteria for inclusion in Appendix II of the Convention; b) provide specific recommendations to the range States of freshwater stingrays; and c) submit a report at the 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties on the progress made by the working group, and its recommendations and conclusions. * The geographical designations employed in this document do not imply the expression of any opinion whatsoever on the part of the CITES Secretariat (or the United Nations Environment Programme) concerning the legal status of any country, territory, or area, or concerning the delimitation of its frontiers or boundaries. -

Introduction In the freshwater aquarium, stingrays are among the most desired of unusual pets. Although a couple species have been commercially available for some time, they remain relatively uncommon in home aquariums. They are often avoided by aquarists due to their reputation for being fragile and difficult to maintain. As with many fishes that share this reputation, it is partly undeserved. A healthy ray is a robust animal, and problems are often due to lack of a proper understanding of care requirements. In the last few years many more species have been exported from South America on a regular basis. As a result, many are just recently being captive bred for the first time. These advances will be making additional species of freshwater stingray increasingly available in the near future. Universidad de los Andes, Colombia e-mail: [email protected] +Instituto de Investigación de Recursos Biológicos Alexander von Humboldt, Colombia Abstract Freshwater stingrays from the family Potamotrygonidae have a restricted distribution to the freshwater systems of South America. Lack of adequate information about the taxonomic and evolutionary relationships, ecology, biology and distribution of several species belonging to this family makes them vulnerable to anthropic activities, including commercial exploitation for the ornamental fish market. Samples were collected from the main river basins in Colombia and Venezuela (Amazon, Orinoco, Magdalena, Esequibo, Caribe and Maracaibo) for four genera and seven species of the family (Heliotrygon gomesi, Paratrygon aiereba, Plesiotrygon iwamae, Potamotrygon motoro, Potamotrygon yepezi, Potamotrygon schroederi, Potamotrygon magdalenae), and some unidentified species. Molecular markers Cytochrome Oxidase subunit I, Cytochrome b and ATPase subunit 6 were amplified and sequenced. Maximum likelihood and Bayesian Inference analysis were performed to obtain topologies for each marker and for a concatenated dataset including the three genes. Small dataset may compromise some methods estimations of sequence divergence in the ATP6 marker. Monophyly of the four genera in the Potamotrygonidae family was confirmed and phylogenetic relations among member of the Potamotrygon genus were not clearly resolved. However, results obtained with the molecular marker Cytb appear to offer a good starting point to differentiate among genera and species as a tool that could be used for fast molecular identification (Barcode). -

Morphology of Lateral Line Canals in Neotropical Freshwater Stingrays (Chondrichthyes: Potamotrygonidae) from Negro River, Brazilian Amazon

The spatial distribution of the canals and their tubules and the quantification of the neuromasts were analyzed in preserved specimens of Potamotrygon motoro, P. orbignyi, Potamotrygon sp. “cururu”, and Paratrygon aiereba from the middle Negro River, Amazonas, Brazil. The hyomandibular, infraorbital, posterior lateral line, mandibular, nasal and supraorbital canals were characterized and their pores and neuromasts quantified. The ventral canals are known to facilitate the accurate localization of prey items under the body, and our results indicate that the dorsal canals may be employed in identifying the presence of predators or potential prey positioned above the stingray’s body. The presence of non-pored canals in the ventral region may be compensated by the high concentration of neuromasts found in the same area, which possibly allow the accurate detection of mechanical stimuli. The concentration of non-pored canals near the mouth indicates their importance in locating and capturing prey buried in the bottom substrate, possibly aided by the presence of vesicles of Savi. In this region, the taxa have signifi cant economic (3) importance for the ornamental fi shing industry, being intensively captured, especially 93(3) the species Potamotrygon leopoldi, which is endemic to this basin. In the attempt to propose a species-specifi c DNA marker for the species from Xingu, as well as ensuring DOI a robust and reliable molecular identifi cation, the present work analysed mitochondrial 10.1590/0001-3765202120191325 gene portions Cytochrome Oxidase C – subunit I (COI) and Cytochrome B (Cytb) of fi ve species: P. leopoldi; Potamotrygon orbignyi; Potamotrygon motoro; Potamotrygon scobina and Paratrygon aiereba. We found haplotype sharing, with a total absence of reciprocal monophyly in the majority of taxa. Individuals morphologically identifi ed as a species showed mitochondrial DNA from another, suggesting the fi rst record of hybridization amongst freshwater stingrays of Xingu.
