Thessaly is a rural region and consequently, the economic development is affiliated with the primary sector of economy. The employment in this sector is related to the size of rural areas, while the agricultural products serve as raw materials to the secondary sector. Water resources constitute a basic factor that influences the quantity of rural production and consequently, the exploitation and their rational management play a decisive role to the economic development of region. The demand for irrigation water, which especially during the summer months is great, shows significant regional variations in water availability. The most important issue is that water resources are not sufficient, while a significant part of water volume leads, mainly during the winter months, unexploited to the sea. in order to overcome the water shortage, several hydraulic public works are implemented. The major hydraulic work is the diversion of the acheloos river to Thessaly. in this paper the economic situation of the Thessaly region, the demand and the supply of water resources as well as the prospec- tive being developed after the construction of the afore-mentioned hydraulic work are analysed. It drains the entire drainage basin of Thessaly (eastern part of Central Greece), part of which is the largest plain of the country. In this research the hydrological, geomorpho- logical and geological characteristics of the riverine area of Pinios were studied. Classification and grouping of these characteristics were then carried out, which led to the segmentation of the Pinios River into seven sections, each one with its own set of thematic data. These sets assign separate functions and evolutions of the river system during the Quaternary. Specifically, the basin of the present Pinios River, before its evolution into a river basin, comprised three separate and independent systems. The present Pinios River emerged as a river system from the merging of the lacustrine paleoenvironments along with the major tributaries that drained large parts of the present hydrological basin and as soon as the karstic openings of the central hill valley and the Tempi valley took place during the Quaternary. The followed methodology for the segmentation of the river can be used for the study of heterogeneous river systems. -

This paper aims at identifying the flood hazard by using historic data in the drainage basin of Pinios (Peneus) River, in Thessaly, central Greece. For this purpose, a catalogue of historical flood events that occurred between 1979 and 2010 and old topographic maps of 1881 were used. Moreover, geomorphic parameters such as elevation, slope, aspect and slope curvature were taken into account. The data were combined with the Geographical Information System to analyze the temporal and spatial distribution of flood events. The results show that a total number of 146 flood events were recorded in the study area. The number of flood events reaches its maximum value in the year 1994, while October contains the most flood events. -

L'espace et ses représentations TMO 32, Maison de l'Orient, Lyon, 2000 LA DESCRIPTION DU PENEE THESSALIEN PAR STRABON ÉLÉMENTS D'UNE REPRÉSENTATION DE L'ESPACE GÉOGRAPHIQUE CHEZ LES ANCIENS Bruno HELLY RÉSUMÉ Strabon, au Livre IX, chapitre 5 de la Géographie, a donné à sa description de la Thessalie un fil conducteur, le cours du Pénée : il le suit depuis sa source dans le Pinde, jusqu'à la mer. On n'a peut-être pas assez vu que cette description n'est pas « au fil de l'eau » : elle est au contraire segmentée en plusieurs parties distinctes qui correspondent aux lignes de force du paysage thessalien, en particulier les défilés qui marquent le passage d'un compartiment de l'espace à un autre. On est ainsi conduit à reprendre l'étude des termes τεμπή, qui est un nom commun générique avant d'être le nom d'un seul lieu, de εκβολή et de ses composés, pour lever un certain nombre d'incompréhensions ou d'erreurs d'interprétation commises sur le texte et la géographie de la Thessalie antique. On a souligné depuis longtemps déjà l'importance de la description des cours d'eau, fleuves et rivières, dans la Géographie de Strabon : cette description sert très souvent de fil conducteur à la « chorographie », la géographie régionale l. Il est clair aussi que l'utilisation de ces lignes de force du paysage, plus encore que la référence aux massifs montagneux, a servi à définir la position de nombreux autres points de l'espace, depuis très longtemps. Les anciens Grecs ont su utiliser les cours d'eau comme repère, non seulement pour décrire un pays 2, mais aussi pour structurer celui-ci, dans des représentations qui avaient d'emblée une signification politique : celle que l'on doit donner à la distribution et à l'organisation des communautés humaines dans cet espace 3. -
