However, a key part of the National Energy and Climate Plan is to gradually phase out the use of lignite, which includes the decommissioning of all existing lignite units by 2023, except the Ptolemaida V unit, which will be closed by 2028. This plan makes Greece a frontrunner among countries who intensively use lignite in energy production. In this context, this paper investigates the environmental, economic, and social state of Megalopolis and the related perspectives with regard to the energy transition, through the elaboration of a SWOT analysis, highlighting the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of the municipality of Megalopolis and the regional unit of Arcadia.

    MUSIC AND TRADITIONS OF THRACE (GREECE): A TRANS-CULTURAL TEACHING TOOL 1 Kalliopi Stiga 2 Evangelia Kopsalidou 3 Abstract: The geopolitical location as well as the historical itinerary of Greece into time turned the country into a meeting place of the European, the Northern African and the Middle-Eastern cultures. Fables, beliefs and religious ceremonies, linguistic elements, traditional dances and music of different regions of Hellenic space testify this cultural convergence. One of these regions is Thrace. The aim of this paper is firstly, to deal with the music and the dances of Thrace and to highlight through them both the Balkan and the middle-eastern influence. Secondly, through a listing of music lessons that we have realized over the last years, in schools and universities of modern Thrace, we are going to prove if music is or not a useful communication tool – an international language – for pupils and students in Thrace. Finally, we will study the influence of these different “traditions” on pupils and students’ behavior. Key words: Thrace; music; dances; multi-cultural influence; national identity; trans-cultural teaching Resumo: A localização geopolítica, bem como o itinerário histórico da Grécia através do tempo, transformou o país num lugar de encontro das culturas europeias, norte-africanas e do Médio Oriente. The material of 107 specimens of small mammals was collected in 19 localities of Epeirus in the years 1985 — 1989. Additional faunistic records were obtained by field observations. Together, information on the distribution of 14 species were obtained. From these Miller's water shrew {Neomys anomalus) is reported first time from this region. Some questions concerning the distribution and habitats of individual species are discussed. Key words. Mammaha, Insectívora, Rodentia, distribution, taxonomy, Epeirus, Greece. Introduction The mammal fauna of the west coast of the Balkan peninsula, south of Neretva river, belongs to the most interesting of Europe. The reason for this is above all an unusual- ly high occurrence of endemism which is typical for this area. So far, only the northernmost part of this area, i. e., Monte Negro, Jugoslavia has been investigated satisfactorily (Petrov 1979). From the rest of this area data are either almost completely absent (Albania) or they are very incomplete (Greece). Therefore, the present paper is intended to contribute to the knowledge of small mammals of Epeirus, a region which is situated in the north-west part of Greece, in the close proximity of Albania. On the other hand, some border regions are situated in countries, which are considered to be «peripheral». Other regions border on third countries whose frontiers are practically sealed. In this later case, only inter-regional cooperation aimed at resolving the problems arising from their remote position can be envisaged initially. The distance separating border regions from their administrative center limits communication with it. These regions often feel discriminated against compared with the rest of the country. Relationships with other regions can prompt them to establish cooperation structures at inter-regional level, thereby creating cross-border links. Cross-border cooperation enables expansion of a region’s communications and exchange network. Outlying regions very often need to develop their potential in a manner, which is complementary to that of the neighboring region. In this context, cross-border cooperation promotes the upgrading of what is frequently called deteriorated infrastructure. Cross-border cooperation involves particular consideration of civil and social rights, information, culture, training, education etc. Environmental protection is the most obvious example of an issue driving citizens to act together, notably at cross-border level. Environmental pollution is an outstanding example of something that can be solved only at cross-border level, since pollution does not stop at state border.

    THE PHOKIKON AND THE HERO ARCHEGETES (PLATE54) A SHORT DISTANCE WEST of the Boiotian town of Chaironeia the Sacred Way I Lcrossed the border into Phokis. The road went past Panopeus and on toward Daulis before turning south toward the Schiste Odos and, eventually, Delphi (Fig. 1). To reach the famous crossroads where Oidipos slew his father, the Sacred Way first had to pass through the valley of the Platanias River. In this valley, on the left side of the road, was the federal meeting place of the Phokians, the Phokikon.1 This is one of the few civic buildings from antiquity whose internal layout is described by an eyewitness.2 Pausanias says, Withrespect to size the buildingis a largeone, and withinit thereare columnsstanding along its length; steps ascend from the columnsto each wall, and on these steps the delegatesof the Phokianssit. At the far end there are neithercolumns nor steps, but a statuegroup of Zeus, Athena, and Hera; the statueof Zeus is enthroned,flanked by the goddesses,with the statueof Athenastanding on the left (1O.5.2).3 Frazersuggested that the interior of the building resembledthe Thersilion at Megalopolis.4 The location of a federal assembly hall so close to the border with Boiotia, an often hostile neighbor, seems puzzling, but given the shape of the entire territory of Phokis, the position of the Phokikonmakes sense (Fig. 2).
