The Old Woman Creek National Estuarine Research Reserve provided housing and some equipment for local surveys while research support was provided by a Research Experiences for Undergraduates award from NSF (DBI 0243878) to B. HABITAT TYPE AND ASSOCIATED BIOLOGICAL ASSEMBLAGES – Shellfish Beds sculpins, rockfish, perch and herring. Hard substrates are arenaria. Sutton (1978) also delineated beds of the rough an important feeding habitat for harbor seals, including piddock (Zirfaea pilsbryi), a native clam that bores into from the Golden Gate east to Treasure Island, northwest soft rock or clays, as a potential species for sport harvest, to Tiburon Peninsula, and southward to Yerba Buena and suggested that there may be significant subtidal beds Island (Goals Project 2000, Green et al. 2006). Also, of the native bentnose clam (Macoma nasuta), which was many harbor seal haul-out sites are located in close commonly harvested by Native Americans. CALIFORNIA MARINE FISH LANDINGS FOR 1972 LEO PINKAS Marine Resources Region 1.1. INTRODUCTION The protection, propagation, and wise utilization of California's living marine resources (established as common property by statute, Section 1600, Fish and Game Code) is dependent upon the welding of biological, environment- al, economic, and sociological factors. Fundamental to each of these factors, as well as the entire management pro- cess, are harvest records. The California Department of Fish and Game began gathering commercial fisheries land- ing data in 1916. Commercial fish catches were first published in 1929 for the years 1926 and 1927. This report, the 32nd in the landing series, is for the calendar year 1972. It summarizes commercial fishing activities in marine as well as fresh waters and includes the catches of the sportfishing partyboat fleet. Preliminary landing data are published annually in the circular series which also enumerates certain fishery products produced from the catch. -

College, Manjhaul INTRODUCTION Pearls are organic gemstone formed inside a living pearl producing molluscs. Pearls are formed when a molluscs secrete thousand of very thin concentric layers of nacre, a secretion of calcium carbonate in a matrix that finally coats an irritant either man made or natural. The pearl producing molluscs are the members of class Bivalvia. The most historically important source for fine natural pearl is Persian Gulf, where pearl oyster where once found in great abundance off the coast and island of present day Bahrain. Japan Has traditional been and continues to be the largest producer of pearls. In India the technological breakthrough in pearl culture was achieved in 1973 by the Marine Fisheries Research Institute(CMFRI)at Tuticorin. CULTURED AND NATURAL PEARLS Cultured pearls- These are the real pearls that are formed inside a living oyster with human intervention. Nucleus is surgically implanted in oyster ,and the oyster recognise it as an irritant and start coating it with smooth layers of nacre. Over time, the growing pearl gets completely covered with the beautiful iridescent substance, nacre or mother of pearl. Natural pearl- Are formed naturally by wild oysters without the human interventions. When a natural irritant lodged inside a oyster, it gets coated with concentric layer of nacre. FORMATION OF PEARL The formation of pearl occurs as a result of the defensive response of the oyster. Whenever a foreign object enters between the mantle and shell, the mantle epithelium get stimulated and surround foreign particle completely. -

They are found only on the west coast of North America, and range from Baja California to Alaska. Sea mussels form dense beds, generally in the intertidal zone of exposed rocky shores.
