Operetta after the Habsburg Empire by Ulrike Petersen A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Music in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in Charge: Professor Richard Taruskin, Chair Professor Mary Ann Smart Professor Elaine Tennant Spring 2013 © 2013 Ulrike Petersen All Rights Reserved Abstract Operetta after the Habsburg Empire by Ulrike Petersen Doctor of Philosophy in Music University of California, Berkeley Professor Richard Taruskin, Chair This thesis discusses the political, social, and cultural impact of operetta in Vienna after the collapse of the Habsburg Empire. As an alternative to the prevailing literature, which has approached this form of musical theater mostly through broad surveys and detailed studies of a handful of well‐known masterpieces, my dissertation presents a montage of loosely connected, previously unconsidered case studies. Each chapter examines one or two highly significant, but radically unfamiliar, moments in the history of operetta during Austria’s five successive political eras in the first half of the twentieth century. Exploring operetta’s importance for the image of Vienna, these vignettes aim to supply new glimpses not only of a seemingly obsolete art form but also of the urban and cultural life of which it was a part. My stories evolve around the following works: Der Millionenonkel (1913), Austria’s first feature‐length motion picture, a collage of the most successful stage roles of a celebrated

  • The 19Th British Silent Film Festival
The 19th British Silent Film Festival Anders als die Andern/Different from the Others Friday 15 September, 5.45pm With an illustrated talk by Dr Matthew Jones (De Montfort University) on LGBT+ representation in German silent cinema Germany, 1919, Silent, 50mins. Director: Richard Oswald Screenplay: Richard Oswald, Magnus Hirschfeld Cinematographer: Max Fassbender Cast: Conrad Veidt (Paul), Anita Berber, Helga Molander, Fritz Schultz (Kurt), Reinhold Schunzel (Frank Bollek), Magnus Hirschfeld (as himself) Extracts from Roy Grundmann, ‘Gay-Themed films of the German Silent Era’, Cineaste, Winter 2005, pp.63 -66: “The largely non-exploitative treatment of homosexuality in Different from the Others owes to the creative influence of two men, the sexologist and founder of the homosexual emancipation movement, Magnus Hirschfield, who co-wrote the script and appeared in the film as himself, and director Oswald, who specialised in this genre and reportedly sought to ensure that its mission to educate was no mere alibi for prurience. Their collaboration produced a liberal treatment with typical strengths and drawbacks. Hirschfield inserted key scenes into the plot that have Paul consult the scientist for help, and, in turn, receive didactically played-up assurance that his proclivities are neither a sin nor a sickness, but merely a variation of nature. In 1919, this effort at depathologizing homosexuality constituted nothing less than scientific heresy and would, in fact, remain radically controversial for decades to come.” Extracts from John Nangle, Review of the Kino Video Release in Classic Images, January 2005, p.36: “Before hearing of the merits of this rare, ground-breaking film, a few historical background notes from the movie’s well-documented prologue are in order: Thousands of homosexual men in Germany were imprisoned to terms of up to five years under Paragraph 195 of the Penal Code.

  • The Dancer – Anita Berber
The dancer Anita Berber Johannes Freund WT 2010/2011 Media Direction – Media Culture 7 Prof. Sabine Breitsameter University of applied Sciences Darmstadt Media Culture 7 – “The dancer Anita Berber“ Johannes Freund Anita Berber was a German dancer and actress, who lived at the beginning of the twentieth century. In respect to her eccentric and excessive life she is often referred to as a vamp or femme fatale. She is famous for her performances, her unique fashion style and her often provocative and lascivious manner. Life Anita Berber was born at the 10th of June in 1899 in Leipzig, Germany as daughter of Felix Berber and Anna Lucie Thiem. Soon, her parents got divorced and Anita grew up at her grandmother's house in Dresden. Being 15 years old she moved to Berlin where her mother, her grandmother and two of her aunts lived together in a living community. During the upcoming three years she studied acting and impressionistic dance, additionally she performed on a variety of stages in cities all across Germany, including her first solo-performance at the “Hochschule für Musik“, Berlin. In 1919 she married Eberhard von Nathusius, son of an upperclass family in order to escape the cramped living situation and the necessity of deference to her related coresidents, but left him only three years later in favor of her lesbian girlfriend Susi Wanowsky. At a performance in Hamburg in 1920 at the revue - founded by Celly de Rheidt - she danced together with the homosexual Sebastian Droste (real name: Willy Knobloch), who started a career as an expressionistic dancer, painter and poet.

  • Eine Queer-Feministische Spurensuche Zu Anita Berbers Tänzerischem Werk Der 1920Er-Jahre
// Agnes Kern „ALLE ALLE STARBEN […]

It is also as far as I'm aware the only book about Berber available in English. Thus: one star for the photos, one star simply for existing. Somebody, please, put me out of my misery and write a half-decent biography of Berber!!! Although the life of the notorious Weimar Berlin dancer Anita Berber is full of enough drama, eroticism, depravity and conflict to fill a dozen books, Mr. Gordon's treatment is oddly flat, even sterile. The facts are all there, but none of the emotion. Sadly, this book did not engage this reader. Here at Walmart. Your email address will never be sold or distributed to a third party for any reason.
