THE GAZETTE is free to all residents, and is a non-profit-making publication. It is partly funded by local businesses, but mainly funded by your patronage of village activities, and your subscriptions to local associations. It is also online at www.galmptontorbay.org.uk via THE GAZETTE links. Views expressed are not necessarily those of the Sponsors or The Editor. Front Cover - Galmpton Windmill from painting by George Bedford 1850-1920. Page 2 Issue 15 Editorial ~ Who’s Who Editorial ~ Who’s Who We have many local organisations, and keeping track of who is who can be a bit bewildering. People in the neighbourhood, especially newcomers, may be unsure of whom to contact in various circumstances. So this might help.

Firstly, I am Mike Tate, the Editor of THE GAZETTE. If you want something published in this magazine then contact me. Although involved with other organisations, I am not usually their main contact, but if you get stuck, then I can help. If you don’t want to keep the whole magazine, the centre contact reference sheet is easily pulled out, and you can search back issues online. Also the Resident Association websites are a mine of information. ~ Residents Associations For anything to do with local highways, or other neighbourhood issues, then one of the Residents Associations should be your port of call. Paul Crocker & Gordon Batten lead Galmpton Residents Association. While Steve Freer chairs Broadsands & Elbury Residents Association. ~ Galmpton Village Institute Referred to as the Village Hall, the Institute is a hub for social activities. The chairman is John Risdon, but to book the hall contact Babs Renwick. This only scratches the surface of our community organisations, and I hope the others are not offended by not being mentioned. More Delivery Volunteers We already have over 40 volunteers who deliver your magazine, but a few more would always be useful. Please contact the Editor if you can help. Horse Sense for MoHtoorsriset sSense for Motorists Charlotte from Maypool reminds me about taking care around horses. Beware of horses being led or ridden on the road, especially on bends and narrow lanes. When you see a horse, slow down, and pass wide and slow. Do not sound your horn or rev your engine. Riders should signal or nod acknowledgements appropriately, as they may have both hands occupied!

Autumn 2009 Page 3 Galmpton FlGaolmpral tDona yFlos ra20l D0a9ys 2009 Open Gardens and Scarecrow Trail ~ Sunday June 7th After weeks, indeed months, of planning, hard work and a great deal of love and care, each of the twelve Gardens, both grand and small, demonstrated its charming potential, not least the three newcomers. For the second year running, we were blessed with wonderful weather, which brought out a record number of visitors, one garden registering 330 people! As ever, many visitors commented kindly on what they saw, including the fun and creative ingenuity shown in the scarecrows dotted around the village that varied from bee-keepers, cricketers, gardeners, scouts, and tractor drivers, to families, witches, chefs, and toddlers, etc. An innovation this year was the introduction of live music from an accomp- lished group of string players led by Anna Chrystie, who alternated during the afternoon with Michael Teale's merry Hand Bell ringers. They created a gentle and appropriate atmosphere as people meandered from one Open Garden to another with Refreshments in the Village Hall providing a very welcome break. Across the years, Galmpton has been creating a desirable little niche as a place where a real community spirit is tangible. As a visitor from up-country, who had never previously been to the village, commented, “There is a lovely friendly glow about the place. Don't lose it. It’s precious.” She was absolutely right, but it doesn't happen by chance. In whatever form you gave support, we thank you. Without you it wouldn’t happen. Fund raising is not our aim but we do! After covering minimal expenses we have the grand total of £1,055.90. Thank you everyone! This sum will be added to moneys collected on Celebration of Skills Day in September, when the final total will be distributed amongst village causes and projects. Many thanks go to Eric Lloyd & Co. for sponsoring the Garden Passports. Celebration of Skills Day ~ Sunday September 6th 10:30 am ~ 6:00 pm So much on offer! So much to see! So much to do! Active participation is the keyword! It is not just a day to admire other people’s skills, though there will be a great deal to celebrate and admire, but a day when everyone has the opportunity to exhibit their own skills and crafts, with hands-on opportunities to have a go at new ones. The first step is to get a copy of the Booklet of Show Schedules now available from the Galleon Stores. The second is to peruse it. The third to decide what you are going to enter then send in your entry forms. Easy! Page 4 Issue 15 So what exactly is on offer on Celebration of Skills Day? There are Four Open Shows all with Certificates and Cups to be won. The Village Flower Show where classes for Flower Arranging, Exhibition Roses, Cut Flowers and Containers promise to assail both sight and smell. The Vegetable Show where 33 classes allow for a whole range of fine Vegetables and Fruits to be expertly measured up in friendly competition. The Cook’s Show has classes for Busy Cooks, Cooks with More Time, Preserves, a Set Recipe and, new this year, a multi-dish Cookery Display. The Craft Show has classes in Handicraft, Art, Photography, Writing and Garden Craft offering inspirational possibilities for a range of diverse crafts. For Children their own sections in the Cooks Show and Craft Show are designed to show us adults just how it is done! NB the Group Entry Craft Class especially devised for schools, youth groups, friends & large families! Handicraft & Rural Skills Demonstrations Throughout the day Lace Making, Quilling, Card Creation, Spinning will have on-going demonstrations, all offering opportunities to try your hand. Outside, Falconry, Rare Breed Sheep Rearing, and Pole Lathe Turning will be on show, the latter with interesting opportunities to have a go. A Workshop ‘Live Landscape Design’ An exhibition of designs and opportunity to discuss your garden possibilities with Kerry Jackson, Landscaper (See Page 45). A Floral Art Exhibition ‘Nature into Art’ promises to be a stunning exhibition staged at the Barn Chapel by the Churston with Brixham Flower Club who meet in Galmpton. Quality Stalls Ever popular, the Plant and Produce Stall with quality plants, many gratefully sourced from local NT gardens, and the Pantry Stall, stocked with scrumptious home-made fare, will again be there for punters purses! Jazz Music Back by popular demand, after their success last year, Tom Wylie’s Jazz group will provide entertainment & atmosphere right in the centre of things. All Day Home-made Refreshments Much needed sustenance, in the form of tea, coffee, home-made cake and light lunches, will be there to deliciously satisfy the inner man and woman! David Warwick will present a melodious Songs of Praise with Daphne Lockitt & Michael Welsh in the Barn Chapel, to end Skills Day at 5pm. To participate fully, ENTER the SHOWS! In the Galleon Stores a Booklet of Show Schedules awaits your attention! Closing date Friday Sept 4th. Our thanks go to Gold Print and Bays Brewery for sponsorship in kind. Page 8 Issue 15 The National Trust, GreenwTayhe National Trust www.nationaltrust.org.uk Tel: 01803 842382 News from Greenway Greenway has received many delighted visitors since opening the house for the first time this year. A toast to the opening took place on Tuesday 2nd June, with project contractors, staff and volunteers, joined by the donor family, the Director General of The National Trust, Dame Fiona Reynolds, and representatives of local organisations at a celebratory cream tea. Fairies in the woods… There was magic in the air at Greenway on Sunday 31st May, when a group of student volunteers donned their wings and waved their wands for the Fairy Queen’s birthday tea. Family events are due to continue with a story- telling session on Thursday 30th July (3:00 pm and 4:00 pm), exploring the life of a 1920s archaeologist. School art in the stables… The celebratory atmosphere continued at the preview for students and their families of the School Arts Partnership Digital Art Exhibition, Greenway on Wednesday 1st July. Pupils of Galmpton C of E Primary, and students from Churston Ferrers Grammar School have worked with Greenway to develop the exhibition over the past year. Their work has been brightening up the Reception area and the Stables. Traffic concerns… We realise that along with the celebrations of all things new, we are also experiencing the difficulties that come with a new attraction finding its feet. We know there is concern amongst our local community about the volume of traffic and issues of parking in lanes by our visitors. We have been work- ing hard to develop our car park booking system, and our communication to potential visitors, to minimise the impact on our local area. We continue to monitor the situation and are keen to know of any thoughts or concerns. To have your views included in our consultations, please pass them on to: Community Engagement Officer, Carly Mays Greenway, Churston Ferrers, Brixham, Devon TQ5 0ES E-mail: [email protected] Tel: 01803 661856 To book car parking, or events at Greenway ring 01803 842382 Volunteers… With the opening of the house we also need more volunteers to assist and inform our visitors. The Braeside Neighbourhood Nursery is a long established private Nursery owned by Mr & Mrs Ashby for the last 20 years. We are open all year except Christmas and Bank Holidays, operating on Monday to Friday from 7:30 am to 6:00 pm. We offer care in separate units for different aged children from 0 to 5 years. This enables us to structure the day for that particular age group. Our baby rooms are large and bright with separate facilities for eating, sleeping, and playing. The rooms for all other age groups are set out to encourage the children to learn through play, allowing them to develop at their own pace. The pre-school group is in a separate building where the staff prepare the children for school. Also the children in this unit are taught basic French. All our staff are trained nursery nurses with NVQ2 & NVQ3, and training is always ongoing. They follow the guidelines of the Early Years Foundation and plan each child’s development individually. We accept all methods of payment i.e. Education Funding, Tax Credits, Child Tax Credits, Working Tax Credits, and Child Care Vouchers, etc. For any enquires please contact us on the above numbers and ask for the Nursery Manager, Denise Harris. Warborough Common ~ Protecting from Travellers The Churston & Galmpton Community Partnership meeting was well attended by over 40 residents. See Page 19 for details. A large part of the meeting was taken up discussing the Traveller problems and the consensus from residents was that the civil court legal solutions were freely abused. The residents agreed a permanent physical barrier was needed to prevent unlawful access. Again, consensus from the residents was that a ditch and grassed up earth bank was the only thing strong enough to keep them out. The grass bank preference was, of course, echoed in a recent GRA resident’s consultation in THE GAZETTE. However, the Council now wants to separately re-poll residents to find out their views and will further explore the cost of this option. We’d encourage you to support the above proposal. Since the meeting, we have seen other problems with Travellers in Paignton and are concerned at Council plans to build up to 13 traveller camps across Torbay, believing this will bring even more problems and cost to the ratepayers. The Manor Inn ~ Complaints We have received a considerable number of complaints about regular late night excessive noise, from the Manor Inn, particularly since mid June ‘09. Torbay Council has confirmed that, after 11:00 pm, the Manor’s license restricts emanating noise (from both inside and outside) to be no louder than the background noise of the surrounding village. We are looking at ways to resolve this with the relevant authorities and the Manor Inn. Dartmouth Road ~ Speed Limit Review We are grateful to Torbay Councillors who voted for the 30-mph Dartmouth Road limit, despite concerns by the Police that it would cause congestion! Page 16 Issue 15 Galmpton Residents’ Association News Galmpton Traffic Calming Gateways We recently E-mailed Council plans and mock-up photos to our members, showing how these gateways might look. We asked for comments to feed- back to the Council. See the GRA website for details. Over 40 members replied and gave resounding support (70%) for a 20-mph speed limit. The 12 residents identified as living in/near the roads affected are generally (83.3%) against the proposal and have issues regarding their intrusiveness and potential cost. However, the 29 residents identified as living outside the calmed area voted (75%) in favour of the scheme. It is clearly difficult to get just enough calming to help justify a 20-mph zone without ruining the village. The gateways could potentially offer this, and will provide a rare opportunity to access central government funding. We will then strengthen our campaign for a 20-mph limit. Updating the GRA Website Our website has grown rapidly over the years and is a well-visited resource. We plan to make it user-friendlier over the next six months, and invite you to notify our Webmaster, Richard Boyles, of any errors or omissions. The only vehicles permitted to drive on the length of road are those wishing to gain access to premises situated on or adjacent to that length of road. Monthly Surgeries Our monthly police surgeries will now be held in Churston Library as well as Galmpton Post Office. See Diary Dates Page 26 for dates & times. Your Neighbourhood ~ Your Voice The PACT post-boxes are still in Churston Library and Galmpton PO for you to complete a card regarding any issues you have about local policing. You do not have to identify yourself. The cards will be collected regularly. The issues highlighted will be dealt with where possible.

Page 18 Issue 15 Churston & Galmpton Community Partnership

Churston & Galmpton Community Partnership Report of Public Meeting held on 21st May Tracey Cabache chaired the meeting, and gave an overview of Community Partnerships concepts. She stated that the Steering Group would define the boundary between Churston & Galmpton and Hookhills at its next meeting. Galmpton Common and Traveller Issues Andy Phillips, Torbay Council Traveller Officer, described the legalities needed to evict travellers from a site. This requires health visitors, police monitoring, and a Possession Order, which in essence takes a full week. The Regional Spatial Strategy obliges Torbay Council to provide 13 pitches for travellers in the future, which is considerably less than other authorities. The consensus agreed a barrier was needed on the Common that allowed for pedestrian and farm vehicle access (to mow grass). An earth bank, 0.7m high, seeded with grass & flowers would be effective, but would cost about £60,000, plus annual grass cutting costs. A blackthorn hedge with temporary wire fence could be just as effective, and would cost about £26,000, plus annual pruning and layering costs. The meeting felt the earth bank option should be explored in more detail. Sgt Casley explained the police action regarding traveller vehicles, etc. Highways Issues These included the bus stop and cycle path at Churston Cross, prohibited access to Old Road, traffic through Galmpton to NT Greenway House, traffic lights at Churston Railway Bridge, parking in Broadsands Road, and speed restriction in Galmpton village. All these, and more, will be discussed at the next meeting to be held on Wednesday 16th September at 7:00 pm in Churston Ferrers Grammar School Hall which will focus on Highways issues, but also take issues from the floor. Together we can make a difference ! Here Comes Summer! Here comes Summer! Already we at Flavel Chapel have enjoyed welcom- ing visitors on holiday to worship with us on Sundays, and some who have joined us in the Bible Studies and Prayer Meetings on Thursday evenings. When we think of our holidays, we are reminded of how much preparation goes into our holiday? We look forward to our holidays, and take time to book where we are going to stay, and all our travel arrangements are then seen to. It is not just holidays, any major event in our life we take time to prepare for, if we can. There is coming a future event in all our lives for which it is absolutely essential that we make proper preparation. The Bible tells us that we must all appear before the judgement seat of Christ. There are no exceptions; each one of us must give account of our lives. Are you ready? Jesus, who is to be our Judge on that day, the first time He came into the world, made peace with God for all who trust in Him. He took all the necessary steps to make sure that His people are welcomed into Heaven. To achieve this He gave up his life. His life for ours, He was the sacrifice for sin, our sins that barred us from heaven. The preparation that each one of us needs to make for our eternal welfare is to trust Jesus Christ alone, and obey Him. How good is the God we adore!

If I actually build up the courage to go, then I usually just want to blend in very unobtrusively, and look like I belong there (not too easy when you’re over 6ft tall and large boned). What I hate most is when people seem to know exactly what to do and I don’t. They stand when I sit, and sit when I stand, and if you go to a church there is often kneeling to fit in with that too. We have given a lot of thought to this problem at Churston, and we think we may have found a way of making this potential problem easier. We call it “transforming worship” or the “service of the word”. You may have seen posters advertising these services at the Barn Chapel on the evening of the 3rd Sunday of the month. Each one of these services is unique and special, we have plays, poems, readings, and hymns (some traditional, but some only written this century). We have prayers too, but not ones you cannot understand; people just join in and pray about the things they think are important to them, but if you just want to sit and listen quietly that’s OK too. Our idea is to make worship comfortable and easy to understand. And we are very friendly. There is always tea, coffee, and biscuits after the service, where we invite people to share their ideas and experiences so we can improve the things we do to make it even better. The style of service means it is suitable for young and old, and from the comments we get at the end, everyone who has been has found something that has spoken to them in the service. So if you have not spoken with God for a long time, or are nervous of going to church where people speak and act in ways that don’t seem right for you, why not come to one of these services. We guarantee a warm welcome. We realise that over the summer many people go away, or have guests staying, so our next session will not be until 6:30 pm on Sunday 20th Sept. For the times of our regular services please see Page 27. If you want further details please feel free to ring me on 01803 844663. Blessings - Ian (Vicar of Churston Ferrers and Kingswear)

What a valuable community magazine this is, although maybe a few less adverts would be welcome! Thank you Mr Tate for your hard work publicising all the numerous village events, which keeps the village vibrant. I particularly enjoy the Galmpton Residents Assoc., updates in each edition. We are extremely lucky to have such a dedicated bunch of volunteers championing issues for us villagers. I attended the recent Community Partnership meeting, which I was pleased to see was well attended, interestingly, mostly by Galmpton residents. Again credit goes to Paul, the Residents Association Chair, who eloquently listed, to Torbay Council, a comprehensive list of issues affecting the village; hopefully they’ll listen and help! I was particularly keen on the idea of protecting the Common from the annual lawlessness brought by the Travellers. It will be years before the Council has the money to provide Traveller camps. The Council advised us that the legal process to evict them is slow and cumbersome, expensive and always appears to work in the Travellers favour. Almost unanimous support for the ditch and grassed up bank was provided by the residents, at the Partnership meeting, and it was explained that this is the only solution that will physically prevent their Caravans entering. I only hope that the Council find the money for this work before next year. The GRA really should put up to be our councillors at the next local election; they’d get my vote! Well done and keep up the good work. David Wakelin, Galmpton Reply from the GRA: On behalf of the GRA committee, many thanks for your kind words in the letter to The Gazette Editor. We'll continue campaigning to physically protect the Common and hope fellow members will support the ditch and bank option at a soon to be held Council consultation, in the Autumn. Our constitution does not currently allow us to directly partake in Party politics so we wouldn't nominate a candidate for the next local election. Paul Crocker, Secretary, GRA Reply from the Editor: Thank you for your positive comments. The adverts help defray the printing cost of over £1,000 per edition, and subsidise unsponsored pages like this one!

Summer holidays are upon us - and fingers crossed we get a lovely autumn. We’ll be launching our Lunch Club, and of course our Tuesday steak nights will return – with live music on the first Tuesday of each month. We’ll be revamping our menus as we move towards the autumn - but some things will never change, like our home-made individual steak and ale pies, our fish and chips, and our Brixham mussels. Chef’s daily specials are on our blackboards and we usually have plenty of local fish dishes to choose from. And to finish, we now have delicious, locally made, puddings from Annette. Why not drop in to try us out, whether for a meal, a snack, or just a quick drink. It’s all home-made and we have a fine selection of award winning real ales and first class wines. Our accommodation is open all year round if you need to find somewhere for friends or family to stay. And don’t forget our large function rooms for that special event. Our quizzes start at 9:00 pm, with General Knowledge returning in September on Thursdays, and Music on Sundays. Keep an eye open for our other music nights, and regular village events using the pub, such as the Celebration of Skills Day on Sunday 6th September - see Pages 4 & 5 for details. As always, we look forward to seeing you in our friendly village pub, where we welcome families and dogs. MARGARET DELBRIDGE MA (Cantab.) B.Sc. Lic Ac Member of the British Acupuncture Council Tel: 01803 842 411 I would like to continue the theme of “Questions I am most frequently asked”, begun in the last issue of THE GAZETTE.

WHICH CONDITIONS DO YOU TREAT ? Conditions commonly treated are those associated with breathing and lung problems, digestive and bowel complaints, gynaecological disorders, joint problems, and pain, eye, ear, nose and throat disorders. Others involve skin conditions, reproductive disorders, emotional and psychological problems, addiction, through to more general feelings of ill health such as low energy, or “not feeling right in myself”. WHAT ABOUT PREGNANCY ? Many women choose to have acupuncture throughout pregnancy and childbirth. It is increasingly used by couples to maximise their fertility and / or as support during IVF treatment. IS IT SAFE ? Acupuncture has a sound track record. The needles used are single use, sterile and disposable. Responses to treatment can sometimes include tiredness or mild dizziness. However, all such reactions are short-lived. GENERAL HEALTH BENEFITS ? More and more people are choosing acupuncture as a preventative measure to strengthen their constitution and optimise their health.
