Photo: Les Nakashima/Nextimage3D Hello FCA Southwest Region Members, Wow! The Ferrari Club of America’s International Meet that we hosted in Palm Springs was incredible. The Hyatt Regency Indian Wells Resort & Spa’s 18th fairway was the perfect setting for the Concours. Over 125 gorgeous prancing horses were judged in all their glory. The mountains, palm trees and perfectly manicured grass accentuated the beauty of the Ferraris. There were a record number of Platinum winners that moved onto the Coppa Bella Macchina competition. I was so very pleased that several of our members said they were inspired to show their cars because of the message I wrote many months ago encouraging them to do so. The Rallies were also a big hit with the attendees. I had several reports that the routes chosen were some of the prettiest scenic drives ever! The Chuckwalla Valley Raceway was a blast! 2.67 miles of testing your skills of handling your Bella Macchina on 17 turns with elevations and off camber maneuvers.

  • The Monza 1000Km: 1965-2008
www.porscheroadandrace.com The Monza 1000km: 1965-2008 Published: 31st October 2016 By: Glen Smale Online version: https://www.porscheroadandrace.com/the-monza-1000km-1965-2008/ The author starts his book, The Monza 1000km: 1965-2008, by calling the first chapter, the years between 1965-1971, the ‘Golden Years’ and he is not the only one to do so. While the cars were rather ‘explosive’ in their performance, drivers and team personalities could also be rather explosive in character. This all added up to a splendid spectacle… which is what the spectators paid good money to come and see. The grids were full of 12-cylinder cars from Italy, 8-cylinder cars from the USA, and 6-and 4- cylinder cars from Germany. Indeed, the resultant competition between the Ferraris, Ford GTs and the Porsches were the very battles that the enthusiasts had come to watch, and the racing was every bit as exciting as the cars and the drivers. There can be few other locations around the world like the Monza Autodrome, where at the time, emotions would run as high as they did there. Perhaps justifiably, Ferrari regarded it as their ‘backyard’ and therefore they came to win in front of the partisan Italian crowds. But Ford and Porsche came intent on spoiling Ferrari’s fun at the first opportunity. That Monza became a steaming cauldron, a centre of such high passions, is therefore unsurprising. www.porscheroadandrace.com The author, Aldo Zana, has done a truly admirable job of marrying the highly charged atmosphere of Monza with the charismatic drivers, the powerful cars, and the enthusiastic crowds, into one colourful and memorable publication.

  • Ferrari's Anniversary Celebrations Get Underway With
Ferrari’s Anniversary Celebrations get underway With re-enactment of 125 S driving through the Maranello gates Maranello (Italy), 10 March 2017 – On March 12 1947, Enzo Ferrari fired up the 125 S, the first car to bear his name. That test-drive on the streets of Maranello marked the start of modern Ferrari history. The then-modest factory quickly grew into one of the great internationally-renowned Made in Italy icons. Now, exactly 70 years later, on March 12 2017, Ferrari launches its official celebrations for this milestone anniversary. To coincide with the official start of the celebrations and to commemorate the events of 70 years ago, Ferrari is also releasing a special video featuring a re- enactment of the first 12-cylinder to sport the Cavallino Rampante on its bonnet, the 125 S, driving through the factory gates on Via Abetone Inferiore and, in doing so, symbolically passing the baton of the Ferrari legacy to the LaFerrari Aperta. 125 S, the first Ferrari This was the first car to sport the Ferrari badge. Its 12-cylinder engine, vital to powerful performance, was designed by Gioacchino Colombo with Giuseppe Busso and Luigi Bazzi also contributing to the project. On March 12 1947, the 125 S, still an unbodied steel rolling chassis, roared to life for the first time and the great Ferrari adventure began. Two months later, on May 11 1947, the car made its track debut at the Piacenza Circuit. At the wheel of the 125 S (the S referring to its sports car-type bodywork) was Franco Cortese.

“The Great Challenges Ferrari – Maserati” The cars exhibited FERRARI 340 MM s/n 0280 AM, 1953 Collezione Camellini The Ferrari 340 earned its place in racing history thanks to Giannino Marzotto’s victory in the Mille Miglia on April 28, 1953. It was built as an answer to the endless search for victory through engine power rather than the refinement of the chassis, the efficiency of the suspensions, the innovation of the parts. Before the Mille Miglia, this car raced in the Tour of Sicily on April 12, driven by Gigi Villoresi with Pasquale Cassani. These were the only two races for the Ferrari factory team: two victories. The car on show here is the one driven by Giannino Marzotto in the 1953 Mille Miglia. The same car also won the Tour of Sicily. It has belonged to the present owner’s family since 1964. FERRARI 250 TOUR DE FRANCE s/n 0793 GT, 1958 Private Collection It did not look like a racing car able to win on a circuit, hillclimb or open road, until the PF 704 bodywork was presented at the 1956 Geneva Motor Show. At Maranello they decided this was the right image for the 3 litre berlinetta they had created for the GT class races. In September 1956, the Tour de France Automobile saw Alfonso De Portago- Edmund Nelson’s victory with the 250 GT. This victory is probably at the origin of the unofficial name, TDF, Tour de France. The car on show here, sold to Giuliano Giovanardi in 1958, carried the driver to numerous hillclimb victories and the Italian Mountain Championship in 1959.

What makes its creator an enigma and a legend? Today, building a brand is a calculated and knowing process, but Ferrari arose from far more subtle and organic processes that matched different times. In an Italy ravaged by the Second World War, Enzo Ferrari and a small team decided to create the perfect racing machine. The exhibition, developed together with Ferrari, explores its powerful personality, the seldom-seen design process, manufacturing, its racing history, and the way Ferrari’s famous clientele helped establish its reputation.
