※ As Criteria C candidates must complete minimum 2 semesters (6 months) of Korean language courses at Hongik International Language Institute, applicants need to have more than 6 months of remaining period of their visa (D-4-1, visa for Korean Language Course) from the date of enrollment to visa expiry. If an applicant fails to enroll at Hongik University International Language Institute due to visa or other reasons, admission can be canceled.

- 7 - III. Eligibility to Apply

For an applicant to be eligible for international admission, he/she must have graduated or is expected to graduate from high school prior to admission, and the applicant and both of his/her parents must have obtained foreign citizenship before the applicant’s entering high school. Here, the term “parents” refers to biological father and mother or adoptive father and mother, but not stepfather or stepmother, and a foreign citizenship means a non-Korean citizenship.

※ One is not qualified to apply as an international student, if - he/she acquired a foreign citizenship by foreign adoption after entering middle school. - he/she or either of the parents holds a Korean citizenship or a dual citizenship of Korea and another country.

※ Students from a country with fewer than 12 years of preliminary and secondary school education will be considered eligible if they have completed an educational program recognized by the Korean Ministry of Education as being equivalent to formal 12 years of preliminary and secondary school program.

※ Guidelines for recognized foreign schools - Applicant must complete 12 years of preliminary and secondary regular education officially acknowledged by his/her own country. Institutions not considered as recognized schools are language schools, college preparation programs, continuing education or adult schools, on-line education, internet-based study programs, high school equivalency tests(GED in USA, Chinese self-study exam, etc). - Nursery, pre-school or language learning institutions are not recognized as parts of 12 years of preliminary and secondary school education.

2. Notices on Application (1) Each applicant may apply to only one school/department. (2) On filing the online application form, each applicant must upload a photo of him/herself (3cm×4cm). (4) Applicants are fully responsible to provide correct contact information and stay accessible during the admission process by phone, email, or postal mail. (6) Application fee and test fee are not refundable. After the application fee is remitted, further modification or cancellation of the submitted application is not possible. (1) The transcripts and diplomas (and other documents, if required) issued by high schools not in Korea must be certified by a consular officer at a Korean Consulate in the country where the school is located. Documents from a member nation of the Apostille Convention may be authenticated with an Apostille. - Accepted applicants who are still in high school at the time of application must submit a diploma or certificate of graduation and High school academic transcript before entrance. (2) Every document, when not explicitly allowed to be a photocopy, must be official and/or original. If non-original copies must be submitted, a confirmation that they are certified copies must be obtained by visiting the Admissions Office accompanying the original documents. (3) Documents not written in Korean or English must be accompanied by notarized Korean or English translations. (4) If more than one name of the applicant appears on the documents, certificates issued by the court confirming that the different names indicate the same person must be submitted. (5) All documents are expected to be submitted simultaneously with the application form. Hongik University is not responsible for missing documents due to separate submissions. (6) Submitted documents will not be returned. During the admission process, applicants may be required to submit additional documents for further information. Additional documents must be submitted within the designated deadline or will be disqualified. (7) After entrance, the attendance records verification process will begin based on the letter of agreement (Form 3). If the attendance records are not verified within 6 months, the student will be responsible for contacting the schools for verification.

1. Weighting Factors in Screening

※ The interview is intended to question and evaluate the applicant’s general knowledge in the intended field of study, the study plan and the applicant’s reasons for applying. ※ Applicants for school/department in the College of Fine Arts and the College of Design and Arts may be asked to take a simple drawing test during the interview.

2. Substituting the Interview with additional documents

Only those applicants who cannot attend the interview for an inevitable reason that the university acknowledges as valid can substitute the interview by sending additional documents. ⑴ The list of the additional documents that are required are as follows. •Humanities and Art Studies, Sciences : a recommendation letter •Arts (excluding Art Studies) : a recommendation letter and a portfolio ⑵ For those applicants who are submitting a recommendation letter and/or a portfolio instead of the interview, all documents must be received by the following dates. If the documents do not arrive in time, the application will not be further processed. •Deadlines: For Fall 2018, 2018.6.8(Fri) 17:00. For Spring 2019, 2018.10.26(Fri) 17:00. •Submission address: Admissions Office, Hongik University 94 Wausan-ro, Mapo-gu, Seoul, 04066, Korea •The letter(s) of recommendation must be written by those who can objectively access the academic capability of the applicant, such as a teacher who personally knows the applicant. Each envelope containing the letter of recommendation must be sealed and signed by the recommender. Recommender’s relationship to the applicant must be stated. •In case a portfolio is submitted, it must be accompanied by a letter, written and signed by a teacher, confirming that the applicant is the true author of the works.

3. Korean Proficiency Test

⑴ All applicants are required to take the Korean Proficiency Test, except those who are exempt as described below. ⑵ The applicants who have acquired S-TOPIK level 3 or above, or have completed level 4 or above of Korean language program at Hongik International Language Institute at Hongik University, are exempt from the Korean Proficiency Test. ⑶ The Korean Proficiency Test takes place in the same day as the interview, time and place of which will later be notified.

- 14 - 4. Application Fee and Korean Proficiency Test Fee

⑴ Application fee is 130,000 Won. ⑵ Korean Proficiency Test fee is 50,000 Won. - Applicant required to take the Korean Proficiency Test must pay the Korean Proficiency Test fee when making payment for the application fee. If applicant submits the certificate of level 4 or above in S-TOPIK, or certificate of level 5 or above by Hongik International Language Institute until the day before the test date, Korean Proficiency Test fee will be refunded. Other reasons than that will not be subject to refunds.

5. Korean Proficiency required for graduation

International students must obtain S-TOPIK level 4 or above before they can graduate from Hongik University.

6. Notices on Screening

⑴ An applicant is disqualified if he or she does not comply with the admission procedure or if required documents are partly missing. ⑵ Applicants must bring their passport or an official photo ID card for the interview in addition to the test registration slip. Applicants can not carry any mobile communication device (such as cell phone) during the interview or the Korean Proficiency Test. ⑶ In the following cases, the admission will be revoked even after the applicant is admitted to Hongik University: ① If the applicant is found to have submitted false or forged documents. ② If the applicant is found not to have met the eligibility requirement. ③ If the applicant is found to have been granted an admission through illegal means. ④ If the applicant is found to have committed dishonesty or misconduct during the test. ⑤ If the applicant lacks eligibility for international admission. ⑷ Applicants who are evaluated to have significantly low level of academic capability(including Korean proficiency) may be denied admission by the Admissions Committee. ⑸ Details of the evaluation process and results will not be disclosed. ⑹ Every screening related decision is solely made by the Admissions Committee.

- 15 - VII. Course Registration according to Korean Language Proficiency

1. Korean Language Class

Admitted students should to take Korean language classes according to the criteria below.

- 16 - 2. For Students who meet Criteria C

Applicants who meet Criteria C are required to take a leave of absence and complete minimum 2 semesters (6 months) of Korean language courses at Hongik University International Language Institute. Once students meet criteria A or B, they may return to university from the leave of absence to take undergraduate Korean courses of criteria A or B. In this case, supporting documents should be submitted to Office of International Affairs, Hongik University, by following due dates.

※ Students who took a leave of absence and completed 2 semesters(6months minimum) at Hongik International Language Institute, must record 80% or more of attendance rate for every semester to return to university. If any student can not meet above condition to return to university, the student will get expelled from both Hongik International Language Institute and Hongik University, and readmission is not allowed. ※ If certain student attended more than 80% of the courses but didn’t meet Korean criteria to return to university (Hongik International Language Institute Course Completion Certificate or S-TOPIK Transcript is required), leave of absence should be extended and additional courses at Hongik International Language Institute should be taken. ※ Students must attend 80% of every semester of language institute, even if it’s additional semesters after first 2 semesters(first 6months)

- 17 - VIII. Hongik Global Scholarship

Hongik Global Scholarship is offered to students who have entered the university via International Student Admission procedure. The terminologies freshmen or currently enrolled students below hence refer to those admitted through the International Student Admission procedure.

1. International Scholarship

⑴ Qualification : Selected among freshmen with S-TOPIK level 5 or 6 ⑵ Selection : The Admissions Committee selects the recipients among those who are qualified. Each year, the total number of beneficiaries cannot exceed 10 and at most two students may have the same nationality. (Spring: 4 recipients, Fall: 6 recipients) ⑶ Benefits : ① full tuition fee including admission fee ② full dormitory fee during regular semesters (for double room) ③ Prior consideration for work-study scholarship ⑷ Payment period : 4 years (5 years for Architecture (5-year program)), and from the second semester on, only the recipients who has taken at least 12 units in the previous semester and earned the GPA of 3.0 or higher are awarded.

2. Korean Language Scholarship

⑴ Qualification : All freshman with S-TOPIK level 4 or higher (In case of College of Architecture or College of Fine Arts, S-TOPIK level 5 or higher) ⑵ Scholarship:

3. International Language Institute Scholarship

⑴ Qualification : All freshmen who attended the International Language Institute at Hongik University for more than two semesters and completed a Korean language program of level 4 or higher. ⑵ Scholarship : 30% of tuition fee ⑶ Payment period : 1 semester after entrance

⑴ Qualification : Partial tuition is awarded to currently enrolled students (applicable from the second semester) based on the following criteria ⑵ Criteria : For the students who have taken more than 12 units in the previous semester, the scholarship will be awarded according to the GPA earned in the previous semester as follows. (For those in the College of Architecture or College of Fine Arts, the scholarship is limited to those with GPA of top 3% in each college among the currently enrolled students.)

5. S-TOPIK Scholarship

⑴ Qualification : A currently enrolled student who obtains S-TOPIK level 4 or higher, which should also be higher than the S-TOPIK level obtained at the time of entrance. ⑵ Scholarship : 100,000 Won for the first time the student obtains S-TOPIK level 4 or higher, and S-TOPIK fee of 40,000 Won for any further improvement in the S-TOPIK level.

6. Condition on multiple awards

Hongik Global Scholarship cannot be awarded simultaneously, and the one with the most benefits will be awarded if multiple qualifications are met. The S-TOPIK scholarship is an exception to this rule and can be received with other Hongik Global Scholarships.

2. Registration

Admitted students must complete registration during the following period by fully paying the registration fee.

⑴ Registration Period

- Fall 2018 : Registration 2018. 7. 9(Mon) ~ 7.13(Fri) - Spring 2019 : Pre-registration 2018.12.17(Mon) ~ 12.19(Wed)

Registration 2019. 1.30(Wed) ~ 2. 1(Fri) ⑵ Payment Method - Payment must be made during registration period. The Shinhan bank virtual account number is stated on student’s tuition fee bills.(Direct payment at Shinhan Bank window, or internet banking, phone banking, account transfer all acceptable) - The tuition fee must be paid in Korean Won even if an applicant remits through a wire transfer abroad. The extra charge that may occur in foreign currency exchange and remittance must be paid by the applicant. ① Korean proficiency criteria C students also must pay tuition fee during registration period, and Hongik International Language Institute fee must be paid additionally as instructed by International Language Institute.(Hongik International Language Institute fee : approximately 1,550,000 Won) ② Korean proficiency criteria C students who return to school from leave of absence when they meet criteria A or B after taking International Language Institute classes, will be exempt from paying the tuition fee of the semester. 3. Notices on Registration ⑴ Admission will automatically be cancelled if registration is not completed by the announced deadline. ⑵ A student can register to only one university or college, when they have been accepted to multiple universities or colleges in Korea.

1. Seoul Campus

⑴ Although international students are given priority in assigning dormitory rooms, some applicants may not be assigned a room if there are more applicants than can be accommodated. ⑵ Facilities - The 1st dormitory: Quadruple room (bed, desk, chair, bookshelf, closet, LAN facilities, phones) ※Shared facilities: dining room, rest area, shower, laundry room, visiting room, and gym. - The 2nd dormitory: A new building with modern facilities(4 basement floors & 24 above ground floors). Double room(527rooms) and quadruple room(6 rooms). Each room is fitted with bathroom including a shower, desks, book shelves, beds, closet, LAN facilities and phones. Facilities of the dormitory also include cafeteria, snack bar, lounge, laundry room and outdoor resting place. - The 3rd dormitory: A new building with modern facilities, the 3rd dormitory is devided into Building A(1 basement floors & 5 above ground floors) and Building B(1 basement floors & 4 above ground floors). Building A has single rooms, vast double rooms, two-room double rooms, and Building B has regular double rooms, special price double rooms of various kinds.
