ADM YOUTH EMPOWEREMENT HAIR STYLIST SEMINAR BY KULASANDE BILLIE

The Amathole District Municipality [ADM] in association with various stakeholders in the Youth and ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT SECTORS, hosted a youth stylist’s em- powerment seminar at Cooperative Development Centre, in Butterworth under Mnquma LM on 15 June 2016. In the main, the Informal hairstylists and salon owners were recently treated to an informative seminar attended by successful professionals in the industry while creating an enabling environment for emerging enterprises in the hair and beauty sector.

Speaking at the seminar was, ADM Enterprise Developm- ent Manager Nyameka Boqwana said they were mindful of the challenges experienced on a daily basis by the infor- their load.

“We are aware of the extreme conditions including end- uring harsh weather that informal hairstylist work under, while yearning to attract customers to do their hair. Government’s intervention presents a wonderful oppor- tunity, grab it with both hands. This day is all about empowering you,” said Boqwana.

Dark and Lovely National Field and Education Manager Hanson Ndabeni said the industry was taking a knock in the region because there had not been any educators designed to assist stylists.

“Educators deal with salon owners and engage with them on how to improve their services and teach them how to use the products to their full potential.” Butterworth-born president of the South African Fashion Designers Agency Sonwabile Ndamase said passing the skills to what he had learnt and now this feels like time to plough back.

“The only thing I could say I come from a humble family, as a person you should have a plan but the most impor- tant thing is how you utilize the plan into an idea that one sees as an opportunity. Learn how to network with people.”

Among the hairstylists were budding fashionists, who Economic Development, Cllr Phendulwa Finca assisted by Sonwabile Ndamase. The recipients had undergone a year’s skills development course in garment-making.
