  • Sustainable Mobility Is the Need of the Hour As India Strives for Self-Sufficiency in Oil and Battles Vehicular Pollution on Its Streets
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Sustainable mobility is the need of the hour as India strives for self-sufficiency in oil and battles vehicular pollution on its streets. A gradual shift towards sustainable transport could create possibilities for stakeholders in newer business areas, such as charging infrastructure or integrated transport. SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY OPTIONS FOR INDIA TODAY Shared mobility, gas-powered vehicles and electric vehicles (EVs) are all potential solutions in India’s quest for sustainable mobility. EVs emerge as a particularly promising option—their market could grow rapidly, especially with the government’s aspiration to have only electric cars by 20301. Many Indian companies are investing to manufacture EV and related infrastructure in India, offering an attractive, more cost-effective alternative to traditional vehicles. PUTTING MORE EVS ON INDIAN ROADS While EVs will penetrate across vehicle segments, faster uptake is expected in the two-wheeler and three-wheeler segments, both very big markets in India2. Even so, EVs are likely to add only around 3 to 7 percent of power demand in India3. They could address important current concerns—reducing oil imports and pollution, cutting logistics costs, and fuelling the Make in India initiative. Despite their advantages, some concerns constrain the uptake of EVs4: ■ Economic viability: Cost concerns predominate in people’s assessment of EVs, especially the high acquisition cost. ■ Access to charging infrastructure: Ready access to charging infrastructure determines the EV experience. • E-Mobility Integration
Knowledge Partner Supported By E-Mobility Integration lectric Mobility, like wind and solar energy, has finally arrived on the scene where it E is challenging nearly a century old fossil fuel powered mobility option. It is often branded as step towards cleaning our transport system with high carbon footprint, meeting climate goals and improve air quality in urban spaces. Complexity of electric mobility transition does exceed the complexities and challenges inherent to low mobility planning, even though later is just an additional dimension to the former. First and foremost, e-mobility poses a threat to traditional automotive industry, along with livelihoods and investments linked to it. Secondly, it requires for significant upfront capital investments required for setting up charging infrastructure and procuring electric vehicles. Lastly, for a city to build an ecosystem for electric mobility transition, other than the traditional institutions linked with urban mobility, role of electricity distribution companies and state electricity regulator becomes very crucial. Electric mobility ecosystem is an amalgamation of three distinct value chains - Energy Supply, Charging Infrastructure and Add-on Services. Customers mobility and providing access to charging is the requisite for building an e-mobility eco-system. The eco-system of E-mobility starts with goal setting, mobility planning and evaluating the current augmentation needs within departments/authorities. It is imperative to foremost address challenges and possible solutions to ensure a seamless E-mobility integration for the city. Electric Mobility Trends Indian transport sector is the fifth largest in world and with introduction of EVs, it is set for a major disruption. Recognizing this, Central and state governments are coming up with policies to make the transition swift and conducive for every stakeholder.

  • Why E-Vehicles Aren't Popular in Bengaluru, and How This Can Change | | Citizen Matters, Bengaluru
10/08/2020 Why e-vehicles aren't popular in Bengaluru, and how this can change | | Citizen Matters, Bengaluru Why e-vehicles aren’t popular in Bengaluru, and how this can change ELECTRIC VEHICLES IN BENGALURU Electric cars will be viable only if there are sufficient charging points. Pic: Maxsonlewis / CC BY-SA (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0) Bengaluru is today synonymous with traffic and air pollution. Among Indian cities, Bengaluru ranked third in overall emissions and energy consumption in a recent survey by CSE (Centre for Science and Environment). PM2.5 and PM10 emissions contribute to much of the air pollution in the city, and 60-70% of these emissions originate from vehicles and road dust. Considering the high contribution of vehicle emissions to air pollution, the Karnataka Electric Vehicle and Energy Storage Policy is a welcome move. The policy targets 100% electric mobility by 2030 for certain vehicle segments — auto rickshaws, cabs, corporate fleets, school buses, public transport buses, and three- and four-wheeler goods vehicles. Buses, cars should be electrified first https://bengaluru.citizenmatters.in/electric-vehicles-bmtc-buses-cars-air-pollution-emissions-vehicle-range-charging-stations-47491 1/4 10/08/2020 Why e-vehicles aren't popular in Bengaluru, and how this can change | | Citizen Matters, Bengaluru Buses and four-wheelers (private cars, cabs) are the major contributors of CO2 emissions in Bengaluru, followed by two-wheelers, considering the average daily run of different categories of vehicles. Around 6,000 intra-city buses each cover 150-200 km per day, 1.75 lakh taxis cover 200 km, and 14.85 lakh private cars cover around 10 km each daily.

  • 'Range Anxiety' in Electric Vehicles
SEASON 7 Overcoming ‘Range Anxiety’ in Electric Vehicles Entry challenge Caselet The Indian Automotive Industry is currently in a growth stage. The automobile pro- duction and sales (in India) is expected to grow at higher rates over the next decade than in most other auto hubs. However, with each make of auto product, additional combustion-engine-based vehicle we manufacture and use, we will be adding car- bon dioxide and other pollutants, using additional fuel, and putting excessive load on our already saturated city infrastructure and traffic. According to a no. of studies, Electric Vehicles (EVs) are less polluting, have better total-cost-of-ownership (TCO) and are expected to rapidly become affordable for Indian Customers. However, range in electric vehicles always troubles the driver with the thought of whether he will be able to make it to the destination without running out of battery (charge), hence the term Range Anxiety was coined. In fact based on a study, Range Anxiety was considered as the primary barriers for Electric Vehicle buying. The data in Table no. 1 clearly shows about delineation of EV Cars options currently available in India. While companies like Tesla and Nissan is offering the EV range greater than 200 kms, the cost goes beyond the affordability range in an already cost sensitive Indian Market. Where? Vehicle? Range Cost Tata Tigor Electric 100 km Rs. 12 lakhs India Mahindra eVerito 110 km Rs. 10 lakhs Mahindra e2o Plus 110 km to 140 km Rs. 7.5 – 8.5 lakhs Table no. 1: Indian Electric Vehicles Electric vehicle range depends on the way energy is gained and the way energy is consumed.
