Hazen Edward Sise was born in Montreal and educated at the Royal Military College, McGill University School of Architecture, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology School of Architecture. Sise apprenticed with the influential Le Corbusier in Paris in 1930 and participated in the "Rejected Architects Exhibition" in New York City. He returned to Europe to work, first in Paris in 1931, then in London from 1933 to 1936. In December 1936 Sise met Dr. Norman Bethune and joined his Hispano-Canadian Blood Transfusion Institute in the Spanish Civil War. When Sise returned to Montreal in November 1937 he became active in the Committee to Aid Spanish Democracy, the Friends of the Mackenzie-Papineau Battalion and H.W. -

History by Norbert Schoenauer Introduction University education of architects in North America began during the late 1860's and represented a new approach to professional training. William Baston Rogers, president of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, established the first School of Architecture. From the beginning, when M.I.T.'s charter was granted in 1860, Rogers had included architecture in his plans for technical higher education, first, because he modeled M.I.T. on the German Polytechnic of Karlsruhe, and second, because, having taught for seventeen years at Jefferson's Charlottesville campus, he was appreciative of architecture. Rogers chose William Ware, a former student in Richard Morris Hunt's atelier, to head the new School. Ware began his teaching in 1868 after having studied European architectural education for a couple of years. The second school of architecture was established at the University of Illinois in 1867, and instruction commenced in January 1870. The first teacher at this school was James Bellangee who was a graduate in science and had but briefly worked in an architectural office in Chicago and, one and a half years later, the Swedish architect Harald M. Hansen, who had studied for two years at the BauAkademie in Berlin, was appointed to lead the school. Cornell University established its School of Architecture in 1871. This third school was headed by Charles Babcock, a pupil and son-in-law of British trained Richard Upjohn. During the following two decades, seven other new schools of architecture were founded in the U.S.A.: Syracuse University was fourth; University of Pennsylvania, fifth; University of Michigan, sixth; Columbia University, seventh; Columbia (later George Washington) University, eighth: Armour now Illinois) Institute of Technology, ninth; and Harvard University, tenth.' McGill University's School of Architecture was established one year after Harvard's in 1896. -

Gabriel Mackinnon provides professional consultant services as specialists in lighting design. The firm, established in Ottawa in 1974, has since completed projects across a wide range of architectural environments including schools, theatres, museums, hotels, stores, churches, and historic restorations. Andrew Mackinnon has been active in the lighting industry for more than fifteen years. He is proud to represent the Canadian independent architectural lighting design industry as the Regional coordinator for the newly formed Canadian region of the IALD. He is also President of the Ottawa section of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IES). He is also active in prototype fixture development, custom fixture design and lighting research. Gabriel Mackinnon has received awards from The Royal Architectural Institute, International Association of Lighting Designers, Canadian Architect, Illuminating Engineering Society and the Canadian Historical Association. Expo 67, or the Architecture of Late Modernity Inderbir Singh Riar Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy under the Executive Committee of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2014 2014 Inderbir Singh Riar All rights reserved Abstract Expo 67, or the Architecture of Late Modernity Inderbir Singh Riar The 1967 Universal and International Exhibition, the Montreal world’s fair commonly known as Expo 67, produced both continuations of and crises in the emancipatory project of modern architecture. Like many world’s fairs before it, Expo 67 was designed to mediate relations between peoples and things through its architecture. The origins of this work lay in the efforts of Daniel van Ginkel and Blanche Lemco van Ginkel, architects and town planners who, in remarkable reports, drawings, and architectural ideals advanced between 1962 and 1963, outlined the basis of a fundamentally new, though never fully realised, world’s fair in the late twentieth century. Party to the Congrès Internationaux d’Architecture Moderne and its influential prewar edicts on functionalist town planning as well as to groups like Team 10 and their opposition to diagrammatic generalisations by an emphasis on the personal, the particular, and the precise, the van Ginkels also drew on contemporary theories and practices of North American urban renewal when first conceiving Expo 67 as an instrument for redeveloping downtown Montreal. The resulting work, Man and the City, which officially secured the world’s fair bid but remained unbuilt, carefully drew on the legacies of most great exhibitions, especially those of the nineteenth century, in order to conceive of sufficiently heroic structures making immanent novel forms of human interaction, social control, and the technical organisation of space. -

A Long--Term Perspective on Place Ville---Marie FRANCE VANLAETHEM, UNIVERSITE ou QuEBEC A. MoNTREAL ISABELLE GOURNAY, UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND naugurated in 1962, Montreal's Place Ville-Marie clearly I marks the affirmation of architectural modernity in Quebec (figure 1) . It was undertaken by New York developer William Zeckendorf, who had been called on by Canadian National Railways to study the portion of downtown Montreal ripped open by laying the company's north-south rail lines, and designed by Ieoh Ming Pei's team of Harvard architecture graduates. This huge commercial and office complex, includ ing the landmark 45-storey Royal Bank tower, dominates a vast urban esplanade that covers an intricate layering of below grade circulation networks. With the creation of this "multi purpose, multilevel core," Montreal, in the eyes of many critics, jumped to "the forefront of urban design."1 This achievement stands as a clear indication of the important role played by American expertise in Montreal's real estate market. The project was not without local and international precedents, however, both from architectural and socioeconomic points of view. Indeed, it had been common practice to hire American architects in Montreal since the late 19th century, when the scale of the city's archi tecture began to increase. Furthermore, the Place Ville-Marie project was the culmination of a long-term urban renewal effort linked to a modernization of the rail transportation system that had been initiated by the Canadian Northern Railway Company in the 1910s and continued by Canadian National Railways after the former was nationalized in 1922. -

As a senior partner, Julia is responsible for many of the management tasks associated with a project: she is the primary contact with the client, responsible for presentations and for the assessment of client’s needs in order to set the project on course. She determines the conceptual design, the conservation strategies and oversees all aspects of the project, through the end of construction. The project architect reports to her, usually on a daily basis, in order to ensure that the milestones are met, the budget respected and the schedule is on target. Julia has a mastery of the philosophical, functional, regulatory and technical issues related to intervening in heritage contexts. Her ability to reconcile protection needs with contemporary expectations has been recognized in numerous award‐winning projects and accounts for her reputation as a national leader in the field of conservation and rehabilitation of historic buildings. -
