Archivists are responsible for understanding these tricky formats’ structures, their dependencies, and their ability to be preserved and maintained over time. Without an archivist’s understanding of how to maintain these formats, institutions and individuals alike face the potential loss of an unknowable amount of audiovisual cultural heritage materials. If archivists do understand these formats and their needs, they gain the tools necessary to fulfill their mandate as archivists within an ever-changing realm of proliferating digital formats.
