All road authorities have agreed to adopt the Austroads Guides as the primary technical reference, together with the relevant Australian and New Zealand Standards. The Australian Capital Territory has adopted the Austroads Guides, and has issued a revised series of documents to reflect this development in standards and specifications for practice in the ACT. Bus stops located as close as possible to safe crossing points. Safety from road and stranger danger – including for the two in five Canberra cyclists who are aged under 15, and for people who walk or cycle to school or work, or whose commutes include walking to and from bus stops (see following table): Commute to school or Children (derived from ABS Adults (2011 census) work, Canberra Census at School, 2012) Walk 8,506 8,271 Cycle 4,029 4,662 Walk to and from bus stops 12,500 11,124 Known pedestrian routes to and through the study area – where are people walking and cycling to and from? The unpublished 2012 and 2013 ACT Government cordon count results include valuable information on the respective numbers of pedestrians and cyclists who use each walking and/or cycling route into and out of the Woden Town Centre. Known pedestrian and cyclist issues and barriers to walking and cycling to and through the study area. Motor vehicle speed is a safety issue for pedestrians and cyclists – especially for children under ten who, according to Kidsafe ACT, should not be allowed to walk or cycle on (presumably including across) roads without adult supervision. The introduction of 40 km/h speed limits in and near Town Centres will reduce the danger, though is is not clear that Kidsafe would regard it as safe for children under ten to walk or cycle on 40 km/h roads without adult supervision.

As Australia grows, so too will Canberra. The ACT Government is planning for our city’s growth by ensuring we have sufficient transport infrastructure in place before increasing congestion critically impacts our highly regarded urban amenity and quality of life. Canberra’s light rail network is a transformational city-shaping project for the Territory, providing an attractive, reliable and convenient public transport choice that connects families, students, communities and cultures. The initial corridor between Gungahlin and Woden via the City and the Parliamentary Zone will form the backbone of the network, linking activity centres north and south of Lake Burley Griffin. In time it will be intersected by a future east-west corridor operating between Belconnen and the Canberra International Airport and other network extensions. This light rail update focusses on the development of the City to Woden (via Barton) portion of Canberra’s overall light rail network. Since the last light rail update, the ACT Government has reaffirmed its commitment to developing the project with $12.5 million to be invested in progressing the project throughout the 2018-19 financial year. The ACT Government also welcomes the upcoming inquiry into the project to be conducted by the Commonwealth’s Joint Standing Committee on the National Capital and External Territories. The ACT Government will continue to engage with the Canberra community as the City to Woden light rail project develops, and as the City to Gungahlin light rail alignment draws closer to completion.

    Logistics Pack Initial release: April 2019 Earth Dreaming: Story of the logo In the words of Dion Devow Earth Dreaming has influences from Indigenous Australian art and culture, both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander. This is very important as Australia has two Indigenous peoples and these peoples have had a major role in observing, nurturing and taking care of country in a harmonious fashion. Earth Dreaming is a representation of our world and observing it as if from space but through an Indigenous lens. The dots are representative of the many peoples, countries and communities in our world and portrays that GEO Week has an international delegation and focus. The blue represents our oceans, and the other lines, dots and colours represent the land and peoples of ALL cultures and countries of the world. The design incorporates an Islander influence with respect to the colours that have been chosen to represent the peoples of the water, or Islanders, which include both fresh water and salt water peoples of Australia and our Polynesian and Melanesian brothers and sisters of the South Seas and other islands around the world. The symbolism of mankind and how we play a hand in nurturing and being the guardians and caretakers of the world is important to depict. We in effect really are responsible for looking after our world and this is depicted through hands holding up the Earth. This design also incorporates the environment, humanity and science and the use of hands also represent human interaction and the holding up of our world and cultures.
