The area is still home to almost two-thirds of the Royal Navy’s surface ships. Royal Clarence Yard was a victualling dockyard from the eighteenth century supplying food and clothing for the Navy. Royal Clarence was to become one of the world’s first large scale food processing plants, supplying fresh water, beer, grain, meat, cheese, butter and rum.

Due to its industrious bakery, almost all Royal Navy hardtack during Queen Victoria’s reign was made at the Royal Clarence Victualing Yard. These simple crackers or biscuits were stamped with the Queen’s mark and the number of the oven in which they were baked. Biscuits remained an important part of the Royal Navy sailor’s diet until the introduction of canned foods. Preserved beef in tins was officially introduced to the Royal Navy rations in 1847.
