It seeks to place values on the ecosystems on which humanity depends. This interdisciplinary study investigates the knowledge and values of ecosystem services for the Tugen people in the Rift Valley of Kenya; for one community, Sandai; and for one sector of that community, women. The study addresses issues of equity of ecosystem service valuations with regard to level of governance and heterogeneity of communities. The questions: ‘Whose value counts?’ and ‘Who pays the price?’ are asked repeatedly. A fresh approach is taken to the methodology by using hodology, the study of paths and interconnected ideas, to explore the natural and the intellectual environments. A long distance trail was walked across the Rift Valley to record links between environment and traditional knowledge. In Sandai, the competing value of the swamps for grazing, cultivation and biodiversity is demonstrated. Walking with Tugen women carrying heavy loads of water raised issues of equity in their roles in management of ecosystems services and their lack of involvement in environmental governance. -

Soils forming from volcaniclastic source materials in both Loboi Swamp and laterally adjacent Kesubo Marsh, two wetland systems of latest Holocene age, were investigated using micromorphology, whole-soil geochemical analysis, and stable isotope analysis of soil organic matter (SOM). Wetland formation was abrupt and possibly related to climate shift from drier conditions associated with the mid-Holocene and Medieval Warm Period, to wetter conditions associated with the Little Ice Age. Pre-wetland sediments are floodplain volcanic sandy silts comprising buried Inceptisols (SOM d13C= –15x PDB) that fine upward to fine silt and clay, which are overlain by clays and organic-rich sediment (peat) (SOM d13C= –26x PDB). -
The Elusive Granary
This book examines the social and political dimensions of Africa's current food and environmental crises. Written by an anthropologist, it focuses on the changes and the problems faced during this century by one particular ethnic group, the II Chamus (Njemps) of Kenya, and traces the area's transformation from a food-surplus "granary" in the late nineteenth century to one that is currently dependent on food imports and aid. By documenting the history, social structure, and ecology of the area, Peter Little is able to show that the crisis among the region's herders is rooted in processes that preceded the devastating droughts of the past decade. Drought is in fact a "normal" state of affairs in semiarid Kenya, but the processes that have inhibited herders from adequately coping with it are not. These trends include growth in absentee herd ownership, which competes for local pastures; engagement in wage labor, which constrains local labor supplies; and a form of sedentary pastoralism that overuses certain range areas while underusing others. The author analyses the relationships between social, political, and ecological variables, and he treats topics such as land management, food production, marketing, state policy making, and labor organization in an integrated fashion. The concluding discussion on the contradictions of development shows how little government and foreign donor programs have done to alleviate poverty and underdevelopment in the area. This is a book that challenges many of the stereotypes about African social life, agricul- ture, and ecology, and it will be of interest to anthropologists, academics and practitioners in development studies, historians, ecologists, and geographers. -

Rainfall records from the Kenya Highlands are highly correlated with the increases in the Eastern African Rift Valley lakes levels that to some extent occur regularly in September following the July to September short rains that are influenced by the S.E. Trade Winds. Previous lake level records show a response to the extent of the penetration of moist air from the Congo Basin between the trade winds and the easterly winds. Undocumented historical records indicate a flooded lakes regime in 1901 and in 1963 implying that the current flooding is a result of a 50 year climatic cycle event. Mapping of the current spatial extent of the flooding in the lakes was prompted while the researcher were conducting a reconnaissance survey for the project: “Understanding the environment, promoting health in Lake Baringo and Bogoria Drainage Basin under the 5th Science, Technology and Innovations Grant on the Theme: Health, Water and Sanitation”. Documentation of the rising water levels in the four Ramsar sites was made using Geographic Information System (GIS) digital techniques and information extraction and representation from Landsat satellite image data for January 2010, May 2013 and September 2013 and October 2013. -

Okeyo Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Fort Hare, Private Bag X1314, Alice 5700, Eastern Cape, Republic of South Africa; Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT This paper attempts to update information on scientific and recommended English common names and the distribution of fish species of Kenya occurring in the Eastern Arm of the Rift Valley drainage system. At least 20 fish families from 35 genera and 66 species occur in the drainage system, with Lake Turkana catchment having the richest species diversity at 50 (76 %). Five (8 %) fish species have been introduced into the drainage, mostly for commercial purposes and sports, viz: in Lake Naivasha, largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides; blue spotted tilapia, Oreochromis leucostictus; Athi River tilapia, Oreochromis spilurus niger; Zill’s tilapia, Tilapia zillii; and in Lake Nakuru, a species tolerant to high salinities, the Lake Magadi tilapia, Oreochromis alcalicus grahami. These introductions may have caused, e.g., the extinction of the Naivasha lampeye, Aplocheilichthys sp. from Lake Naivasha. Most fishes occurring in the drainage are at times capable of living in both lacustrine as well as riverine conditions, except three (5 %), which tend to be entirely riverine.
