View from the Vicarage

September begins with the church fete on Saturday 3rd and includes the Historic Churches Bike Ride on Saturday 10th. On this latter date, all round the country people visit by bicycle or various other means of transport as many churches as they can, being sponsored for the number visited. Money raised is shared between their own church and the fund for their county, providing resources to help any local historic church with costs of repairs.

I was surprised when first I came here, to hear how frequently the subject of the English Civil War came up in conversation. Being local, you will know that this year marks the 360 th anniversary of the Battle of Worcester. Information from the BBC records that the Battle of Worcester took place on 3 rd September 1651; between a largely Scottish army under Charles II and the Parliamentary forces under Oliver Cromwell. After losing the battle Charles was forced to flee for his life. Many of the Scottish soldiers who survived the battle were transported to America. For our 11am Communion Service at Powick on the nearest Sunday (4 th ) we plan to organise the service as it was in 1651 – so be prepared for things to be a little different that morning.

Over this summer, we have all been shocked by the violence and destruction and looting caused largely by children and young people across the country. The Bishop of London has written - “Whatever the real motivations of those who have brought violence to our streets, there will be a proper time for sober analysis and an assessment of the role of gang culture in the capital.

“For now, the other side of the story of violence and looting is the swift response of communities across London in clearing up the debris and caring for the victims of what has happened. Our churches are already at the forefront of this, helping those whose homes and businesses have been affected, including distributing meals and providing hot water and mobile phone charging for those left without electricity, to ensure they can remain in touch with loved ones.” /continued overleaf 3

The Church of England has published a prayer for peace in our communities. The prayer has been distributed via Twitter and Facebook, and is being published by many diocesan and parish websites, for church and personal use.

Gracious God, We pray for peace in our communities this day. We commit to you all who work for peace and an end to tensions, And those who work to uphold law and justice. We pray for an end to fear, For comfort and support to those who suffer. For calm in our streets and cities, That people may go about their lives in safety and peace. In your mercy, hear our prayers, now and always . Amen

Meditation Group

The Group will meet on September 6th at Thea’s home. Rayvue, Old Malvern Rd, Powick at 2pm. This month we shall, for a change, concentrate on a passage in the New Testament. What has John to tell us in JOHN ch 9? Do join us to read, discuss then quietly think about Jesus healing a blind man, and the reaction of the people who saw or heard about it. No previous study of the Bible is necessary to join this informal small group. We are all benefitting by learning together.

The International Day of Peace—21st September

“Peace is one of humanity’s most precious needs. It is also the United Nation’s highest calling” (UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon). In 2002 the General Assembly of the UN officially declared 21 st September as the permanent date for the International Day of Peace. Peace Day is observed by millions of people the world over and each year events are organised to celebrate the day. Malvern Churches Justice & Peace Group are commemorating the Day this year with an event at the Peace Pole (dedicated last year on 21 st September) in the grounds of the Friends Meeting House in Orchard Road. This takes place at 11.30am and will be followed by a talk and shared lunch in the Meeting House at 12 noon. The speaker will be the Revd David Haslam, MBE, from Evesham. David is author of Race for the Millennium : Challenge to Church and Society , and a member of the Churches Commission for Racial Justice. All are invited to lunch bringing their own contribution of food. Drinks will be provided.

The World Council of Churches has called on churches to make this a day of prayer for peace and to include prayers for peace in their services on the Sunday before or after. The Joint Public Issues Team (Baptist, Methodist and United Reformed Churches) produce resources for Peacemaking Sunday at www.jointpublicissues.org.uk/peacemakingsunday

Make me an instrument of your peace; where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. Adapted from the Peace Prayer of St Francis

God’s Word for the world

So often I write of the Bible Society’s work abroad: today I want to tell you about projects in the UK. The society launched a short film competition to be based on a biblical story. This year at Pinewood Studios the ‘Enter the Pitch ‘ competition was won by Rob McLellan. a video lecturer at Sheffield College. His prize is to make a 20 minute film version of his outline of a film ‘Jericho’, a sci-fi retelling of the biblical conquest. No great Bible reader before entering the competition, Rob scan-read the Old testament 3 or 4 times before coming up with his pitch! Would be film makers are invited to submit their ideas for this year’s competition at www.enterthepitch.com

About 25,000 Bibles are given each year to new recruits and front line soldiers by the Naval, Military and Air Force Bible Society. The Society have produced an audio New Testament ‘You’ve Got The Time’. This spring many Elim churches were encouraged to listen to it. If you would like to listen to YGTT on an MP3 do contact me. Please keep your coins coming to help the work of the Bible Society. Total to date is £25.82

Kris would like to thank everybody who came to the fundraising event for the Historic Churches Trust and and Dudley Churches Trust on Saturday 6th August. The tea party was a great success and enjoyed immensely. We even had unexpected free entertainment from next door’s tree being cut down. Thanks to all you generous people who, between you, gave a staggering £126.50 for the Trusts.

Junior Church in Powick Parish

Why? To learn more about God in a fun, relaxed environment and make new friends.

Where? St James’ Church, Callow End (next to the school)

When? At 9.30am Sunday mornings during term time

What do we do? We have fun! There’s 2 groups, one called Splash (age 5 – 10) which meets every week during term time and one called Grid (age 10 onwards) which meets roughly every 4 weeks.

We start by joining in with the start of the main church service with some songs and prayers then, after 5-10 minutes, we go into the Vestry and learn about God through various activities – gener- ally a craft activity for the younger group and a group discussion about life and topical issues for the older group. After about 40 minutes we rejoin the main service for its final minutes before enjoying a drink and biscuit.

For the first half of the autumn term we will be meeting on the following dates:

11 th September – Splash and Grid 18 th September – Splash 25 th September – Splash Birthdays in September 2nd October – Splash 9th October—Splash Samuel Lippitt—11 16th October— Splash & Grid

Our theme for this half term will be

At the A.G.M. in July, it was decided that the existing President, Treasurer and Secretary should remain in place for another year. Many other topics were discussed including finance and the decision was taken to increase the annual subscription to £5 from September 2011 mainly because of the rising cost of speakers. Many ideas were put forward for the 2012 programme and the Secretary will follow these up during the coming months. Refreshments were then served by Thea and Margaret.

There will not be a meeting in August and we will reconvene on 13th September at the Orchard Community Centre at 2.30pm.The speaker will be Rosemary Wells on the work of The Mission Aviation Fellowship. Any new members will be more than welcome or why not come along just to find out what it is all about. If you are new to the area it is a good chance to make new friends. The speaker will be Rosemary Wells on the work of The Mission Aviation Fellowship.

Reaching Out & Responding to local community needs

If you live in the Malvern area you may have seen the Community Minibuses or heard of the Car Service. These are just two of the many services provided by Community Action Malvern and District (CA). The Car Service provides individual transport for healthcare journeys such as doctor’s surgeries, hospitals, dentists, opticians, chiropodists, using volunteers driving their own cars, to people over 65 or registered disabled, or who have no access to other forms of transport, living in or around Malvern. Shoparound provides a door-to-door minibus service to local shopping areas such as Worcester, Pershore, Tewkesbury and Ledbury, and also occasional special outings, to the same clientele group. If required, friendly volunteers will help with escorting and carrying shopping, and even pushing a wheelchair. Clients can take their own chairs on to the wheelchair accessible minibuses or they can use one of CA’s own wheelchairs. Two specially adapted wheelchair access cars are available for medical appointments, as part of the Car Service with a volunteer driver, or for hire to be driven by a family member or friend. The two 15 seater minibuses are available for the use of local organisations such as church groups, youth groups, and retirement homes, again with volunteer drivers or self drive (with certain necessary qualifications.) If you feel you could benefit from what CA offers, please do not hesitate to ask for assistance by contacting the office at 28-30 Belle Vue Terrace in the centre of Great Malvern on 01684 892381. Community Action is always looking for more volunteer drivers for both the Car Service and the minibuses. If you would be interested in volunteering in this way, or indeed in any other way, please contact the office as above. The treasurer is retiring shortly. Do you have, or do you know somebody who has, the right skills to take over this important task? Please contact Ron at Community Action. The Annual Charity Fair will be held this year on Sat. 19 th November in the York Hall of Malvern St James’ Girls School. All local voluntary organisations, including the Churches, are invited to apply for a stall. The cost of a table will be £25 which can be recouped by selling programmes supplied by CA. All monies raised will be for the organisation’s own funds. There will be refreshments throughout the day, music by local choirs and ensembles, Santa’s Grotto and a prize for the best dressed stall! If your organisation would like to be considered for a stall (spaces are limited) please contact CA (01684 892381 or [email protected]).

For more information on Community Action, its operation, and its services, please see www.communityaction.org.uk or contact the office on 01684 892381.

During the school holidays I had my six year old grandson who lives in Bournemouth to stay for a few days. One of our days out was to Hereford Cathedral. On seeing the scaffolding up he stopped and said “I hope we can go in Nanny as they haven't finished building it yet.” Needless to say we did go in and enjoyed our visit.

Enid Howard 1927 - 2011

Mrs Enid Howard, widow of Edgar, mother of Peter and Cottia, and mother-in-law to Heather, died peacefully in Cheltenham General Hospital on 6th July following a short illness.

Enid was well known to many local people, having lived at Collett's Green from 1967 until 2009. Until her early retirement in 1982, she taught first at Powick Primary School and then at Callow End.

Following her training at Goldsmiths' College, London, Enid began her teaching career in Nottinghamshire shortly after the Second World War. Before moving to Powick, she spent 2 years teaching infants in Kentish Town, while her husband was seconded to the Nuffield Secondary Science Teaching Project in London. When Edgar was appointed to a lecturer's post at Worcester College of Education, the family moved to Powick and Enid undertook supply work in local schools. She later took over as teacher of Class 3 (top infants) at Powick School. She had a passion for teaching art and a keen interest in science and maths. Former pupils may remember her Christmas plays and her leadership of the Kingfishers. In 1981, Enid moved to Callow End School, where she was made very welcome.

During their retirement, Enid and Edgar enjoyed many hobbies, including gardening. Edgar died in 1992, and in the 19 years that followed, Enid maintained her characteristic independence, pursuing her interests of embroidery, painting and tapestry. Her last 22 months were spent at Badgeworth Court, near Cheltenham. Although her mobility had worsened, and her short-term memory loss was severe, her determination, stoicism and good humour were all unimpaired. She took part in many activities, including art and singing. She was a favourite participant in word games because she could spell correctly and was a favourite resident because of her gentleness and politeness. Enid's funeral was held in Cheltenham on 14th July and a collection for Save the Children in her memory raised over £300, which has been given to the Emergency Fund for use in Somalia.

Friends of Link Nurseries

A new volunteer group, Friends of Link Nurseries, held its first meeting at the Horticultural Therapy Centre in Hamilton Close on 2nd August. Manager Jane Smart explained the work of the Link Nurseries, an NHS Centre which provides horticultural and occupational therapy for adults with mental ill-health.

The dozen or so new Friends enthusiastically discussed the most effective ways for them to support the clients and staff at Link Nurseries, Topics included fundraising generally, seeking donations of small equipment and funds for larger projects, PR to raise the profile of the unit and gain more customers for the plants and vegetables on sale, and volunteer help with general jobs around the centre, such as weeding, tidying, etc.

The next meeting will be on Tuesday 6th September, 4.30 to 6.30pm. Do please join us if you would like to help support this valuable local centre – all skills, experience and enthusiasm needed and welcome.

Taken from Diocesan News, September edition

Bishop David's Letter

At the point when I was first seeking to respond to God's calling me to ordained ministry a wise priest said to me, "David, clergy are like horse manure - spread thinly they get the garden growing, but piled up all together they just make a stink!" It was an old joke even thirty years ago, but it's one I remember whenever I'm off to attend the House of Bishops or General Synod, and it has come to mind again as we get ready this month for the first Diocesan Clergy Conference we have had in my time in Worcester. Like most of the jokes that pass the test of time, it has a grain of truth in it. The Church's licensed and ordained ministers are called to spend the vast majority of their time in their parishes and chaplaincies, growing the Church and Kingdom through their distinctive contribution to the ministry of all the baptised that is God's mission. And I've spent more hours of my life than I care to recall in clergy meetings that have descended into either competitive bragging, "my ministry is more fruitful than yours", or communal whinging about difficult funeral directors, over -demanding bishops and the intricacies of the Faculty system. Also, like most good jokes, it's an exaggeration. I'll be packing my bags later this month with a real sense of excitement and expectation. I'm looking forward to spending several days in the company of a large body of people deeply committed to living and proclaiming the Christian Faith and to responding to what the Holy Spirit is up to in the Diocese of Worcester. As we share our individual stories, I'll be looking to recognise the common themes and patterns that are the clues to where the most significant opportunities and challenges are arising, and hence where a Bishop's contribution can be most effective. I'll be enjoying praying with a body of people who, more commonly, I am praying for . And whilst the formal sessions and worship will be vital ingredients of the event, I'll also be looking forward to the informal chats and socialising that strengthen the friendships among us and so underpin the more formal occasions when I meet with our clergy and lay workers back in the Diocese. So please pray for the Conference, for all who will be attending it, that we will be inspired both by God and each other, and return to Worcester strengthened for the time ahead.

Do you have a credit card that you are finding hard to pay off?

New changes to give consumers more control over their credit card accounts came into effect in January 2011. The six main changes are:

The most expensive debt will always be paid off first. Before , most credit card companies used your repayments to pay off your cheapest debt first. This meant you paid interest on the more expensive debt, such as cash withdrawals, over a longer period of time. On new accounts, the minimum payment will reduce the outstanding balance. For new accounts opened from 1 April 2011, credit card companies must set the minimum payment at a rate that reduces your actual balance by 1% each month. Before , if you made the minimum payment, this would generally only cover fees No credit card cheques unless requested Before , credit card companies could send you cheques that you could use to withdraw money against your account. Now you will only be sent these cheques if you ask for them. More choice and control over credit limit increases Before , your credit card company could increase your credit limit without asking you. Now , they have to contact you if they want to increase your credit limit. You will have 30 days to decide whether to accept the increase. This gives people more control over their spending. Clearer communications about interest rate increases Before , if credit card companies increased your interest rate and you chose not to accept it, your account would be closed and the outstanding balance repaid at the existing rate over a reasonable period of time. Now , once your credit card company has contacted you, you will have 60 days to decide whether to reject the new rate. This means you will have more time to explore alternative deals. More flexibility about how much you pay towards your bill Before , if you wanted to set up a regular payment you would have had to pay either the outstanding balance, or the minimum payment each month. Powyke Women’s Institute

August 2011

The Severn Group skittles were held at Ryall but this time we did not win any prizes or raffle but we enjoyed the chips and sandwiches.

Members went to the Swanpool meeting and also to a races day at Kempsey W.I. All dressed up for Ascot they paraded their hats, enjoyed songs from the musicals, games and strawberries and cream. We won quite a lot of prizes this time.

What a super day we had on the 27 th visiting the Elgar Centre at Lower Broadheath. We watched a video about Elgar’s life and were able to peruse the artefacts displayed with the help of a cassette player. It meant that we could visit the small birthplace cottage in our own time without it becoming too crowded. Those who could not manage the stairs were able to sit out in the well maintained garden and enjoy the tranquillity. We then treated ourselves to a good value lunch at The Bell in Lower Broadheath.

Jenny was worried about access to her house for the cream tea afternoon on the10th. All was well and the troublesome road works had moved on and the weather was fine. As so many events were around our usual date of midsummer we decided to make the event a cream tea in August. It was well supported for the Worcester Breast Care Unit and Christine Hickman Smith our W.I. Chairman was able to attend.

It is skittles on the 19 th at Madresfield and our next meeting is on September 14 th at the Orchard Club.

O Lord, remember not only the men and women of goodwill, but also choose those of ill-will. But do not remember all the suffering they have inflicted upon us; remember the fruits we have bought thanks to this suffering—our comradeship, our loyalty, our humility, our courage, our generosity, the greatness of heart which has grown out of all this, and when they come to judgement let all the fruits we have bourne be their forgiveness.
