Please email [email protected] or contact the Editor on 01905 830744. 2 View from the Vicarage September begins with the church fete on Saturday 3rd and includes the Historic Churches Bike Ride on Saturday 10th. On this latter date, all round the country people visit by bicycle or various other means of transport as many churches as they can, being sponsored for the number visited. Money raised is shared between their own church and the fund for their county, providing resources to help any local historic church with costs of repairs. I was surprised when first I came here, to hear how frequently the subject of the English Civil War came up in conversation. Being local, you will know that this year marks the 360 th anniversary of the Battle of Worcester. Information from the BBC records that the Battle of Worcester took place on 3 rd September 1651; between a largely Scottish army under Charles II and the Parliamentary forces under Oliver Cromwell. After losing the battle Charles was forced to flee for his life. Many of the Scottish soldiers who survived the battle were transported to America. For our 11am Communion Service at Powick on the nearest Sunday (4 th ) we plan to organise the service as it was in 1651 – so be prepared for things to be a little different that morning. Over this summer, we have all been shocked by the violence and destruction and looting caused largely by children and young people across the country. The Bishop of London has written - “Whatever the real motivations of those who have brought violence to our streets, there will be a proper time for sober analysis and an assessment of the role of gang culture in the capital. “For now, the other side of the story of violence and looting is the swift response of communities across London in clearing up the debris and caring for the victims of what has happened. Our churches are already at the forefront of this, helping those whose homes and businesses have been affected, including distributing meals and providing hot water and mobile phone charging for those left without electricity, to ensure they can remain in touch with loved ones.” /continued overleaf 3 The Church of England has published a prayer for peace in our communities. The prayer has been distributed via Twitter and Facebook, and is being published by many diocesan and parish websites, for church and personal use. Gracious God, We pray for peace in our communities this day. We commit to you all who work for peace and an end to tensions, And those who work to uphold law and justice. We pray for an end to fear, For comfort and support to those who suffer. For calm in our streets and cities, That people may go about their lives in safety and peace. In your mercy, hear our prayers, now and always . Amen Revd Sue Irwin Meditation Group The Group will meet on September 6th at Thea’s home. Rayvue, Old Malvern Rd, Powick at 2pm. This month we shall, for a change, concentrate on a passage in the New Testament. What has John to tell us in JOHN ch 9? Do join us to read, discuss then quietly think about Jesus healing a blind man, and the reaction of the people who saw or heard about it. No previous study of the Bible is necessary to join this informal small group. We are all benefitting by learning together.
