NEA/NSC/DOC(97)19 NEA NUCLEAR SCIENCE COMMITTEE ACTINIDE SEPARATION CHEMISTRY IN NUCLEAR WASTE STREAMS AND MATERIALS December 1997 NUCLEAR ENERGY AGENCY ORGANISATION FOR ECONOMIC CO-OPERATION AND DEVELOPMENT FOREWORD The separation of actinide elements from various waste materials is a significant problem facing developed countries. The issue arises primarily because of the potential long-term hazard of many of the actinides, but is also due to the regulatory requirements associated with actinide waste disposal, which are different from those associated with other radioactive wastes. The different regulations are in turn related to the different health hazards and generally longer half lives of the actinides. This issue is of continuing interest to the OECD/NEA Member countries primarily in relation to waste produced within power station fuel recycle. Similar problems exist for waste produced in the past as a result of nuclear weapons production programmes and wastes likely to be produced in the future emerging from operations required for waste disposal. The Nuclear Science Committee, representing the interests of the basic R&D in the OECD/NEA Member countries, has established a task force of experts in actinide chemistry to review the current and developing separation techniques and chemical processes of interest in separating actinides. This task force was commissioned with the preparation of a report on the subject. The task force members are listed in Annex 1. This report is intended to provide a timely and representative guide to technical journals and other sources of separation chemistry information on the actinide elements. An important objective is to provide information that may be used to conserve energy and protect humans and the environment. -

Our country created the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), ensuring the rights of 57.8 million Americans with disabilities, including 5.5 million veterans. The ADA inspired the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) treaty. The CRPD ensures that the basic rights we enjoy, such as the right to work and be healthy, are extended to all people with disabilities. Last December, America’s leadership diminished when the Senate failed to ratify the CRPD by 5 votes. In the pages that follow, you will find the names of 67,050 Americans who want you to vote Yes on the CRPD. Their support is matched by more than 800 U.S. organizations, including disability, civil rights, veterans’ and faith-based organizations. These Americans know the truth: • Ratification furthers U.S. leadership in upholding, championing and protecting the rights of children and adults with disabilities • Ratification benefits all citizens working, studying, or traveling overseas • Ratification creates the opportunity for American businesses and innovations to reach international markets • Ratification does not require changes to any U.S. laws • Ratification does not jeopardize U.S. sovereignty The Senate has an opportunity that doesn’t come along often in Washington—a second chance to do the right thing and to ratify the CRPD. B 99, 224411 (2019)]. © 2020 AMERICAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY During my time in the APS Presidential Line, starting in 2017, I have developed a deep understanding of this dynamic and complex organization, which does far more than just fulfill its objective “to advance and diffuse the knowledge of physics”. I am very proud of the APS, its members and its staff and am proud to have served as its president. In early February 2019, we announced the APS Strategic Plan: 2019, which laid out strategic priorities for addressing our challenges and opportunities. During this process I have tried to inspire us to look to the future and to encourage a spirit of experimentation. Some of the specific actions I promoted have gotten underway this year. Highlights include: APS Innovation Fund: This is a strategic investment in new, emerging ideas, from both members and staff, which align with APS priorities. The first grants were awarded in August to four projects that develop new approaches to advancing the interests of the physics community. -

A Short History of Nuclear Medicine In Cooperation with our University Partners 2 Meet the Presenter… Carolyn J Anderson, PhD Dr. Anderson is Director of the Nuclear Molecular Imaging Lab at the University of Pittsburgh and Co-Director of the In Vivo Imaging Facility at the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center. Research interests include the development and evaluation of novel radiometal- based radiopharmaceuticals for diagnostic imaging and targeted radiotherapy of cancer and other diseases. She has co-authored over 180 peer-reviewed and invited publications, mostly in the area of developing radiopharmaceuticals for oncological imaging and therapy. A current focus of her research lab is in the development of imaging agents for up- regulated receptors on immune cells that are involved in inflammation related to lung diseases including tuberculosis, primary tumor growth and cancer metastasis. science XN9800106 OCDE Actinide Separation Nuclear Waste Streams and Materials 29-3 NEA NUCLEAR ENERGY AGENCY O M NEA/NSC/DOC(97)19 NEA NUCLEAR SCIENCE COMMITTEE ACTEVIDE SEPARATION CHEMISTRY IN NUCLEAR WASTE STREAMS AND MATERIALS December 1997 NUCLEAR ENERGY AGENCY ORGANISATION FOR ECONOMIC CO-OPERATION AND DEVELOPMENT ORGANISATION AN Pursuant to Article 1 of the Convention signed in Paris on 14th December 1960, and which came into force on 30th September 1961, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) shall promote policies designed: — to achieve the highest sustainable economic growth and employment and a rising standard of living in Member countries, while maintaining financial stability, and thus to contribute to the development of the world economy; — to contribute to sound economic expansion in Member as well as non-member countries in the process of economic development; and — to contribute to the expansion of world trade on a multilateral, non-discriminatory basis in accordance with international obligations. The original Member countries of the OECD are Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States. The following countries became Members subsequently through accession at the dates indicated hereafter: Japan (28th April 1964), Finland (28th January 1969), Australia (7th June 1971), New Zealand (29th May 1973), Mexico (18th May 1994) the Czech Republic (21st December 1995), Hungary (7th May 1996), Poland (22nd November 1996) and the Republic of Korea (12th December 1996). About the Nanoscale Science, Engineering, and Technology Subcommittee The Nanoscale Science, Engineering, and Technology (NSET) Subcommittee is the interagency body responsible for coordinating, planning, implementing, and reviewing the National Nanotechnology Initiative. The NSET Subcommittee was established in 2000, replacing the Interagency Working Group on Nanoscience, Engineering, Technology (IWGN), which was formed in 1998. NSET is a subcommittee of the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC), which is one of the principal means by which the President coordinates science, space, and technology policies across the Federal Government. The National Nanotechnology Coordination Office (NNCO) provides technical and administrative support to the NSET Subcommittee and supports the subcommittee in the preparation of multi-agency planning, budget, and assessment documents, including this report.
