NEWSLETTER Issue 3, Term 3 2015 Dates to Remember 6 July Try-a-thon Dear Parents, Students & Staff Welcome to our newsletter for Term 2. It is hard to believe that we are already halfway through our school year for 6 July Last day Term 2 2019. As always, it has been a very busy term with a number of excursions and activities that our students and staff have been involved in. We have welcomed a number of Year 6 students who have been in the process of trialling for our 23 July Students Return Specialist Programs for 2020 as well as those students from our feeder Primary Schools who have been a part of the after school RASE program. During the second half of the term the Year 11 and 12 Woodwork students have had their work showcased in either the Library or front office. The quality of the pieces was a testament to the dedication of the students as well as the 24 July-9 Course Counselling exceptional support and guidance provided by Ms Vaughan. Aug Year 10 Our Dance students once again did an amazing job performing at Octagon this term. The performance was held at the University of WA Octagon Theatre, where our students showcased their hard work to parents and the Perth community. 29 July Whole School The performances were a great success and it was a fantastic opportunity to see our students performing their routines Assembly alongside other schools. Congratulations to all the students who were involved and a big thank you to Mrs Brown, and the staff who attended and helped on the evening. Our Year 11 Certificate II in Music students put on a great performance, which was really well attended by staff, students 19—23 Book Week and parents. This is the first time that this event has occurred and I appreciate how difficult it is“putting yourself out there” on the stage and singing or playing an instrument. Well done and I’m looking forward to seeing the students Aug continue to grow. Our Senior School students held “The Enchanted Forest” School Ball on 28 June at the Pan Pacific Hotel. What a 2 Sep Start date OLNA R2 fantastic night, the behaviour of our students was outstanding and the venue was brilliant. A big thank you to Mrs Gough and her Ball Committee who organised this wonderful evening for us all to share in. A heartfelt thank you to our staff who attended the event in their free time (also for putting on an amazing dance spectacular) and also to our wonderful students. 9-13 Sep Mental Health Week The last day of Term 2 is always my favourite as this is when we have our annual “Try-a-thon Day”. This is where our students raise money for Telethon by running, walking or sometimes crawling for six hours up and down the rugby pitch. It really brings the school together for a greater cause. We have gone fully electronic this year with our sponsoring, whilst there were a few hiccups early on we have nearly achieved our goal of raising $30 000. Well done to the amazing students, as well as our dedicated staff who were there from 5:30am on the day setting up the gazeboes, tables etc. 17 Sep Athletics Carnival A huge thank you and well done to our valuable library staff who not only help students in the library but run the breakfast club every morning as well as putting on various activities during lunch and recess breaks. They are constantly arranging different themes to run through the library to ensure that the Library is a place for us all to access. Finally, congratulations to the Senior Girls Basketball team who won their recent Semi Final to make it into the Grand 27 Sep Last Day for Students Final at Bendat Stadium in August. Look out Shenton College, we want this title! Alongside this our Year 9/10 Netball Term 3 students have made it through to the quarter finals stages of the “High School Cup” which will occur next term. Well done to all the other sides who participated as well as our Rugby sides who compete across the whole year for their competitions. I hope you all have a safe and enjoyable two week break and I look forward to seeing you all when school returns on Tuesday, 23 July. The environmental committee meet every fortnight to discuss and plan ways to improve the school’s environmental sustainability. This term we have made progress with the ordering of recycling bins for our school. This will allow our school to be more environmentally friendly. We are also in the process of creating a video which will be presented to students and on our social media networks. This video will contain information on how to pack environmentally friendly lunches and educate students on the severity of pollution. We hope everyone has a great two week break and we look forward to next term. Hayley Withnell and Ena Mickle School Captains. Thirty-four male students from High Schools in the Rockingham, Kwinana and Cockburn area were selected to take part in a sev- en day program, aimed to provide an insight into the many ca- reer opportunities available in the Kwinana Industrial Area. The iMEN Project has continued to gain momentum since its inception, which is why many of the KIC member companies, including Cockburn Cement, BP Refinery, Tianqi Lithium and Alcoa have shown their commitment to this year’s program by hosting tours for the students. During this year’s program, the students were guided through a series of workshops, including research into industry, career choices and education pathways, the use of social media, resume writing, and preparing for an interview. SENIOR SCHOOL BALL On Friday 28th of June, the ‘Enchanted Forest’ Senior School Ball was held at the Pan Pacific Hotel in Perth.
