Abdulla Shaan, Maldivian fisherman A SOCIO-ECONOMIC ASSESSMENT OF THE TUNA FISHERIES IN THE MALDIVES Thomas Hohne-Sparborth Contributing authors: M.Shiham Adam & Adam Ziyad This report presents an analysis of the role of the pole-and-line fishery of the Maldives as a social and economic policy, as opposed to a purely ecological one. The study explores how government policies have helped shape the fishery and have impacted on the vulnerability, adaptability and livelihood assets of the local population. The sector is heavily exposed to trends on the world market, and the economic potential of the fisheries remains underutilised. However, the pole-and-line fishery has served to create an accessible and equitable form of employment to a large, and otherwise isolated, part of the population, and benefits from the fishery are spread through the economy through consumer spending, saving and re-investment, including in education. The field work for this Technical Report was conducted in April-May 2013. Our mission is to protect sea turtles and their haBitats. The ORP operates in several regions of the Indian Ocean including the Maldives, Kenya, Oman and Pakistan. We focus on research, rehabilitation and education & outreach to achieve our mission. We operate a Marine Turtle Rescue Centre and a Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Centre in the Maldives. We are a team of turtle biologists, veterinarians and conservationists that use our knowledge to safeguard sea turtles and their habitats. OUR RESEARCH We have one of the largest sea turtle-ID and Mustard ©Alex ghost net dataBases in the Indian Ocean. Our research areas are: • Photo-identification (population research). • Genetics / isotopes • Ocean modelling • Ghost gear modelling. • Parasitology • Turtle behaviour • Satellite tagging • Sea turtle veterinary science OUR PARTNERS We have partnered with resorts, organisations and local NGOs to host our rescue and rehabilitation centres, research teams, and to maximise the effectiveness of our reach in local communities. -

The aim of this publication is to present an analysis of health financing system of the Republic of Maldives and to provide information and evidence for health policy Maldives decisions and resource distribution to improve the quality of health service delivery across the country. The study presents a descriptive analysis of resource flows in the health system, showing where resources come from and how they are used. Presented data constitutes an essential benchmark for assessing the system National Health Accounts performance and evaluating health policies and interventions in the future.
