Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings March 31, 2016 THIS DAY IN REDS HISTORY 2003-Cincinnati hosts the opening of Great American Ball Park. The Reds lose to the Pittsburgh Pirates, 10-1, before a sellout crowd of 42,343 MLB.COM Get the season started with 30 cool Statcast stats for 30 teams MLB.com analyst Mike Petriello looks back at the some of the best Statcast findings in the inaugural year of the new analysis tool By Mike Petriello / MLB.com | @mike_petriello | March 30th, 2016 + 0 COMMENTS This marks the second season of Statcast™, and that means we have an entire season of data about exit velocity, spin rate, extension, arm strength, lead distance, launch angle and just about anything else you can think of, for every team. Let's get the season started in style by running down an interesting Statcast™ stat for each team -- in many cases, something that never could have been measured prior to 2015. AMERICAN LEAGUE EAST Blue Jays: 1.07 seconds: Ryan Goins' baseball-leading exchange time, which is a way to measure the time that elapses between a fielder receiving the ball and releasing the throw. What that means is that no infielder in the game managed to get rid of the ball as quickly as Goins did, which makes sense given his stellar defensive reputation. Orioles: 82.2 mph: Darren O'Day's average exit velocity against on four-seam fastballs, the second lowest among 407 pitchers who threw at least 100 of them. Despite averaging just 88 mph on his otherwise unimposing fastball, O'Day's swing-and-miss rate of 36.8 percent was better than every pitcher other than Aroldis Chapman, and the hitters that did make contact against O'Day's funky sidearm delivery failed to make good contact, leading to a .097 average against it.

Most notable of the group is Cincinnati's recent free-agent signee, starting pitcher Scott Feldman, who will be with Team Israel. Reliever Jumbo Diaz will pitch for the Dominican Republic, second baseman Dilson Herrera will be with Colombia and non-roster catcher Shawn Zarraga will play for the Netherlands. Feldman, who turned 34 on Tuesday, was signed to a one-year, $2.3 million contract on Jan. 26, and he is expected to be Cincinnati's No. 4 starter. He was 7-4 with a 3.97 ERA in 40 games (five starts) with the Astros and Blue Jays this past season. Diaz, 32, has been with the Reds in each of the past three seasons, but he isn't a lock for a bullpen spot this spring. In 45 games in 2016, he had a 3.14 ERA, retired 30 of 45 first batters faced and allowed six of 19 inherited runners to score.

Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings June 2, 2015 THIS DAY IN REDS HISTORY 1921-Pat Duncan hits the first home run over the fence at Redland Field. The ball strikes a startled policeman standing on York Street. MLB.COM Slugging Frazier wins NL weekly honors Reds third baseman hit four homers and led MLB hitters with .500 average By Adam Berry / MLB.com Reds third baseman Todd Frazier took home his first National League Player of the Week Award on Monday. Frazier led all Major League hitters last week by hitting .500 (11-for-22) while leading the NL with a 1.227 slugging percentage and 27 total bases over six games. Frazier's four home runs were tied with Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado and Mets first baseman Lucas Duda for the most in the NL. He also ranked among the league leaders in doubles (four, tied for first), on-base percentage (.560, second), hits (11, tied for second) and RBIs (seven, tied for third). With Frazier leading the way, the Reds pulled off a three-game sweep of the Nationals over the weekend. He went a combined 8- for-12 with two homers and three RBIs in that series, capped off by a three-hit, two-RBI performance in Sunday's 8-2 win at Great American Ball Park. Frazier ended the week on a four-game hitting streak, all of them multihit outings, as he became the first Cincinnati player to win a weekly award this season. The 2014 All-Star currently ranks second in the NL behind Washington's Bryce Harper with 16 homers, and Frazier's .624 slugging percentage ranks third behind Harper and D-backs first baseman Paul Goldschmidt.
