CPA UK Lunchtime Lecture Series Preventing Conflict through Cultural Dialogue Mr Adrian Sanders MP, Culture, Media and Sport Committee Adrian Sanders was born in Paignton in 1959 and attended schools in Paignton and Torquay. He was elected to Torbay Council as a Liberal Democrat in 1984. He worked for party leader Paddy Ashdown in the early 1990s, standing unsuccessfully for the Torbay parliamentary constituency in 1992. Standing again in 1997, Mr Sanders won the seat with a majority of 12 and continues to serve as MP for Torbay to this day, currently with a majority of 4,078. He has been Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Diabetes since 1998 and serves on the Select Committee for Culture, Media and Sport. From 2006 to 2010 he was Liberal Democrat Deputy Whip and is currently Vice-Chairman of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association. www.adriansanders.org Mr Samuel Jones, Demos Associate and co-author of ‘Cultural Diplomacy’ Sam's primary interests are culture, the arts and international and intercultural communication. He is a co-author of ‘Cultural Diplomacy’ and has developed work on the international activity of cultural organisations, the subject of an article 'Diplomacy and Skills for the Cultural Age'. Prior to this, Sam contributed to the Demos collection, Production Values, which features his piece on 'The New Cultural Professionals', and also co-wrote Knowledge and Inspiration, which looked at the contribution of museums, libraries and archives to the cultural and social life of the UK. He has also written on Global English and conservation and the material world, the UK Film sector and the role of conversation in the public realm. Elsewhere, Sam sits on the UK Executive Board of the International Council of Museums (ICOM). He has also worked with the BBC to investigate TV arts audiences, and has three years experience of brand and consumer consultancy. With this experience, he brings an understanding of people as people and how culture might fit into their lives more generally. He has a double first in History from Cambridge and an MA in the History of Art from the Courtauld Institute of Art. www.demos.co.uk Mr Vijay Krishnarayan, Deputy Director, Commonwealth Foundation Vijay Krishnarayan is the Deputy Director of the Commonwealth Foundation. Over the past 25 years, Vijay has supported civil society organisations in the United Kingdom and the Caribbean. In London, he worked in Brixton and Hackney on community action for the environment and joined the National Council for Voluntary Organisations to facilitate the development of environmental networks. Vijay left the UK for the Caribbean in the mid 90s, joining one of Belize's leading NGOs to focus on environmental policy. He went on to work for one of the region's sustainable development think tanks - the Caribbean Natural Resources Institute (CANARI). Based in Saint Lucia and then Trinidad (his parents’ home) he went on to become the Institute's Managing Partner before returning to the UK. A land-use planner by training Vijay has a special interest in the relationship between development and the environment. www.commonwealthfoundation.com Ms Sue Wallace-Shaddad, Intercultural Dialogue Lead, Education & Society, British Council Sue Wallace-Shaddad currently leads on Intercultural Dialogue as well as being a core member of the management team for Education and Society programmes in the British Council. Prior to this, over the last two years as Programme Leader Sharing Futures, Sue had a cross cutting strategy role on intercultural dialogue, youth and citizenship agendas, with a geographical focus on Middle East, Near East and North Africa, Europe, Central and South Asia (particularly Pakistan). Sue is on the British Council's global programme boards for citizenship, employability and school linking programmes. Sue has had an extensive career in the British Council with overseas postings in Spain, Nigeria, Poland, Slovakia (as Director) and Russia. Sue has been in corporate roles in the UK since 2002 firstly managing strategic corporate partnerships such as the World Bank and the BBC and subsequently overseeing a large part of the overseas network as Deputy Geographical Director. www.britishcouncil.org .
