    TREORCHY MALE CHOIR TOUR OF SCOTLAND 2002 By Dean Powell, Publicity Officer & Honorary Archivist TREORCHY’S HIGHLAND ADVENTURES THE Welsh pride themselves in the wonderful camaraderie that exists between fellow Celtic nations. That is the fundamental reason why Treorchy choristers have long-since expressed their eagerness to tour Scotland. It seems hard to believe that although the Choir has entertained audiences the world over, this was its first extensive visit to the country. This was not the first occasion for representatives of Treorchy Male Choir to travel this far north. In fact the original Treorky Choir received an invitation to sing at Edinburgh Castle more than a century ago. Prior to their magnificent royal command performance for Queen Victoria at Windsor in the winter of 1895, the Choir gave a private concert for the Duke of Cambridge at Edinburgh. It was a further fifty years before this Scottish relationship was rekindled in the Rhondda and it took place between two of Britain’s most distinguished choral conductors. John Haydn Davies, the founder-conductor of the re-formed Treorchy Male Choir formed a close bond with Sir Hugh Roberton of Glasgow Orpheus fame while adjudicating a choral competition together in the South Wales valleys during the early 1940s. Their relationship, based on a mutual admiration for demanding musical excellence from their respective choirs, continued for the remainder of their lives. It wasn’t until 1953 that the choral giants of Treorchy and Glasgow were first united however, and this took place between Treorchy and that of the Glasgow Police, whose members included former choristers of the Orpheus.

Eddie joined the choir in 1947 and only in recent years did ill health prevent him from attending rehearsals and concerts. MARCH Saturday March 4 Millennium Stadium The choir was honoured to be invited by Dr Haydn James to perform once more at the magnificent Millennium Stadium. The performance was held on the day of the Powergen Cup Semi-Final which saw the London Wasps against the Leicester Tigers, followed by Bath Rugby playing against the Llanelli Scarlets. Once more the choir joined forced with the Bedwas Trethomas Machen Band. With rehearsals undertaken at the Dragons Mouth, the choristers marched on the pitch to perform for the Leicester Tigers on one side of the stadium, and the London Wasps on the other. The choir sang Cwm Rhondda, Delilah, Ole Time Religion and Impossible Dream. Following rapturous applause by the Wasps in particular, the choristers were allowed the opportunity to watch both matches from their seats. Tuesday March 7 Rehearsal Room The Choir gave a performance of Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau for S4C’s Newyddion programme this evening. The broadcast was held to promote the concert on Friday evening. Both Jan Ball and a representative of the Buy as You View Cory Band were interviewed for the programme. Friday March 10 Wales Millennium Centre The choir's second performance in the impressive Wales Millennium Centre came just a few months following their debut there with the Royal Variety Performance.

More memories from Joe For the third of my lockdown projects, and with the help of Gethin Williams, Keith Warren, Jeremy Wood and Dr Haydn James, I take a look at all the sporting arena performances that the London Welsh Male Voice Choir have been involved in. The Arenas The rehearsals are over. You walk out in your red jackets, heart-thumping, into a half empty stadium and stand on the pitch, pre-match, looking at the vast space of the arena that will, in a short time, be packed to the rafters with fervent supporters. You are performing to a captive audience who’s heart and soul are perfectly in tune with yours and who give you their undivided attention as the atmosphere is ramped up minutes before kick-off. You are privileged to be here, walking on hallowed turf. You feel the excitement and pride of appearing before an expectant nation. You smell the newly cut and watered grass. You hear the roar and stand in unison with your heroes as they walk onto the pitch. There is a moment’s silence as the crowd rises and all eyes are on you, and your eyes are on the conductor, as his baton brings in the band accompaniment before experiencing the spine-tingling emotion of singing your national anthem to an arena packed with rugby fans and a live television audience of millions. You are part of extraordinary matches and witness legends being made, and folklore created in song. You are on the fi eld with The London Welsh Male Voice Choir and you will be part of some of Wales’s most iconic rugby matches in modern times.

The meeting, marking the end of Tony Foster’s 2-year tenure as District President, commenced with Tony leading the Opening Devotions: it continued with him guiding us through the review of the year’s work as contained in the Annual Report. Certificates were presented to Sarah Boyce. Hilda Dumpleton, Diana Bianchi, Julie Nedin, and Stephen Wilson (in absentia) in recognition of successfully completing a Rites of Passage course under the tutorship of Rev Eric Jones. Diana Bianchi was installed as District President for 2017-19, with Alun Watts elected as Vice President. All other Officers were re-elected and, in addition.     HISTORY OF THE CHOIR Background The Choir, whose Welsh name means ‘Choir of the South African Sons of Wales, was formed in January 1978 by a group of expatriates. Its mission is to promote singing in the manner of Welsh choirs. A non-profit-making organisation made up of amateur choristers, our reward is to give enjoyment to others – as well as ourselves – through the medium of song. The seeds were sown in late 1976 in the Killarney Hotel, Florida, Roodepoort. On Friday nights, about half a dozen of the local Welshmen organised a revival of the Welsh custom of informal sing-songs. In mid-1977, it was decided that the formation of a proper Welsh Choir should be considered. The group started rehearsing in the Durban Deep Gold Mines welfare facility. By the end of the year, the talented Rosa Roos (sadly now deceased) had become involved. Sponsorship was obtained from the Light Horse Regiment and in January 1978, rehearsals moved to the German Hall in the then Rand Show Grounds (now part of Wits University Campus). After at least fifteen hundred concerts, the Choir now has a repertoire encompassing a broad musical spectrum, from opera to spirituals, popular songs to classics, show hits to religious pieces (particularly Welsh hymns). Welsh, English, Zulu, Xhosa, Sotho, Afrikaans, German, Latin, Italian and French, are some of the languages sung. As well as various other concerts, performances have included numerous church services, television, & radio. The Choir also featured in the film ‘Heel Against the Head’. After several changes in rehearsal venues over the years, the Choir now practices on Tuesday evenings at Marks Park Sport Club.
