Ook al wordt het buitengewoon zwaar, ik zie voldoende kansen. We hebben recent bewezen dat we goed zijn en kunnen presteren. We hebben behoorlijk veel kwaliteit als team én voldoende speelsters met specifieke individuele kwaliteiten. Onze saamhorigheid en het feit dat we samen één gedachte hebben over hoe wij het beste kunnen spelen, is onze grote kracht. We willen veel aan de bal zijn, zoveel mogelijk het initiatief hebben en aanvallend spelen, via verzorgd positiespel van achteruit. We houden daarbij vast aan het 1:4:3:3-systeem, dat we tot aan de aftrap in Edmonton – en zo lang mogelijk daarna – willen perfectioneren. Aspecten als het verhogen van de handelingssnelheid, verfijnen van de technische vaardigheden, meer rendement halen uit kansen en in sommige situaties nog meedogenlozer leren verdedigen, maken daarbij het verschil. Hoe dan ook zullen we, op een geweldig toernooi als dit WK, ook hierin weer flinke stappen maken. China, Nieuw-Zeeland en bovendien tegen het gastland, in Montreal in het bijzijn van vijftigduizend fanatieke Canadezen; we mogen aan de bak, in een werkelijk fantastische entourage. Hier gaat het allemaal om! Waarbij ik de meiden meegeef dat zij vooral dát moeten blijven doen waarin ze goed zijn, ook in hun continue streven telkens nóg een beetje beter te worden. Ze moeten ‘gewoon’ laten zien waartoe ze in staat zijn, met plezier hun voetbal spelen en genieten van hun aanwezigheid op dit grootse podium. Daar genieten op onze beurt wíj weer van; de staf, alle fans van de Leeuwinnen – in Canada en thuis voor de buis, van jong tot oud – en vanzelfsprekend ook de vele media. Ik wens ons en jullie allen een heel aangenaam, levendig en voor Oranje succesvol toernooi, waarin in het bijzonder ‘voor ons eigen Nederland’ veel mooie en memorabele momenten te registreren zijn! She was so close to fulfilling her dream of playing for the Dutch National Team, when during her debut game for the ADO Den Haag Club in February 2008, a close shot from one of her teammates led to a harsh hit on her head, resulting in a severe concussion and whiplash. Sustaining a TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) changed the whole trajectory of her life. While soccer shaped Rianne into the person she is, TBI brought her to where she is today. Rianne, a distinguished former national soccer player from the Netherlands, went through motions of disbelief, pain, denial, and acceptance post-concussion—and emerged, phoenix- like, to take her life to a whole new level. This is not an injustice but a reality. The real injustice is that conditions are not the same for everyone and, in particular, that some clubs deliberately go into the red to reinforce their teams by means of costly transfers. Legislation is stricter in some places than others and it is clearly beyond the means of an organisation such as UEFA to interfere in national procedures. This cannot, however, be used as an excuse to do nothing. We cannot advocate respect in every possible form and champion fair play without encouraging them in the financial domain too. The first step in this direction has already been taken: by introducing IN THIS ISSUE a compulsory licence for clubs participating in European competitions, Football united UEFA has already laid down criteria to guarantee the financial health of clubs against racism 03 and, by extension, the orderly running of its competitions.
