Further research subsequently reinforced that impression. Much of the material on which the book is based was collected in the course of my 1979 field trip which took me to India, Pakistan and the United Kingdom as well as Afghanistan and during a follow-up trip to India and Pakistan from December 1980 to January 1981. Unfortunately by then times had changed and on this second occasion the Afghan government refused me a visa. Texts of speeches and statements by Afghan leaders and other Afghan government documents have for the most part been taken from the Kabul Times, since these are in effect the official version. I have however taken the liberty where necessary of adjusting the syntax of the Afghan translator. The problem of transliteration is inescapable, and at the risk of offending the purists I have chosen what appears to be the simplest spelling of Afghan names and have tried to be consistent.

The daily Hindustan Times urges the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) to take safety issues more seriously. About 20 NGOs under the banner of ''Movement Against Uranium Project'' are planning a demonstration against proposed mining of uranium deposits in a remote village in Andhra Pradesh. "Barc admits radiation error" 2. Other News and Opinions The Nation, a conservative Pakistani daily, notes US efforts to develop 'mini nukes' and urges the Pakistani government to "think of the dangers of the new weaponry to its [Pakistan's] own underground strategic facilities by shedding such thoughts that its complete capitulation to the USA might save it from becoming a target." The Daily Times (Pakistan) reports that India plans to build a lighter, longer range, version of its ballistic missile Agni. J. In a country where the majority of politicians have been indistinguishable, grey and quick to compromise, he stalked among them as a Titan. He has been called ‘blackmailer’, ‘opportunist’, ‘Bhutto Khan’ (an undisguised comparison with Pakistan’s military dictators Ayub Khan and Yahya Khan) and ‘His Imperial Majesty the Shahinshah of Pakistan’ by his enemies. Time magazine referred to him as a ‘whiz kid’ on his coming to power in 1971. His supporters called him Takhare Asia’ (The Pride of Asia) and Anthony Howard, writing of him in the New Statesman, London, said ‘arguably the most intelligent and plausibly the best read of the world’s rulers’. Peter Gill wrote of him in the Daily Telegraph, London: ‘At 47, he has become one of the third world’s most accomplished rulers.’ And then later, after a change of heart and Bhutto’s fall from power, he described him as ‘one of nature’s bounders’.
